Chapter 14: Battle of True Nobility: Liberation of Southern Torrs

Marshland Deltas, Southern Torrs, Late Afternoon.

The Marshland Deltas, a place teeming with brushes, swamps, mud, poison grass and water. A place not suitable for farming but a vital road to reach areas of the South. A place that nobility has no place of but will now become a battlefield between two nobles who fight not only for survival but of their nobility. One who claims nobility by mere name, another whose acts justify nobility.

Yansho Main Camp

Governor Yansho has his troops already on formation and has his strategists assuring him victory.

Yansho Strategist 1: Lord Governor, with how our camp is positioned, they will assume that directly charging into us will bring them victory. Little do they know, the poison grass fields are actually in front of our camp. The raging waters are to our left side. They will be forced to attack us to the right should they dare. But little do they know, we have soldiers waiting for them there. Victory you are assured of!

Yansho: You are right. We have the advantage and even if this place barely recognizes nobility, it will recognize one side who will remain as noble and victorious. That shall be me.

Yansho Strategist 2: Might this be the time to give us more of an advantage by calling in more reinforcements from Baron Corrvin? Surely we will need more men...

Yansho: -rejects the suggestion- Nonsense! We are already bending nobility by conceding to using ambush troops instead of charging at them head on with more of our soldiers. Should we call in Corrvin's men, then all the glory that should have gone to me will be placed onto others. Remember, I should be the one who will be written down as the victor for nobility dictates it.

Blade Main Camp

Sayfuro returned from scouting along with some sniper falcons from a safe distance. This is what he had to report to Pattou and the rest of the troops,

Sayfuro: This will be the toughest battle just yet. There are bushes but no trees. The way to the enemy camp is wide open but I fear that path may be the one with the poisonous swamps and grass that we have heard of earlier. Water surrounds the camp to its left. The only way to go about this is charging to the right. I fear that the enemy is fully aware of this.

Pattou: You make a good point, Sayfuro. It seems this will not be as easy as what we have done in the West. But luckily, Gerard has supplied us with his cache from the merchants of potions and antidotes.

Gerard: - quick to interrupt - Although these will serve as our supply advantage, these should and do not mean immunity. These will take time to kick in so let us not overextend ourselves.

Pattou: We do not have the advantage of trees this time around but of bushes. Liger, can your sniper troops produce fire arrows to burn down the grass?

Liger: Leave that to us."

Pattou: That being said, can you defend our main camp along with Gerard?

Liger: -nods in agreement-

Pattou: Now that leaves us with...Riff, can you lead the peasant brigade?

Riff: -with conviction-This will be first time you ask me to lead despite all I have said, but for your sake and for the peasants, do not die on me!

Pattou: -laughs- Understood

Rikkou then volunteers to add to the plan,

Rikkou: Cousin, allow us to be your advance guard along with Master Sayfuro. We shall all charge out and bring down Yansho for good.

Pattou could only nod in agreement as they ready themselves for the impending advance.

Delta Marshlands, Southern Torrs, Minutes later.

Governor Yansho, in his overconfidence would remain in the camp expecting word of victory to come from one of his soldiers. His troops on the other hand were already in position with an advance force already marching towards the Blade Main camp.

Little did Yansho know, their main camp was already being fired upon by arrows from across the poisonous swamp grass fields. Yansho's guards in the main camp were already reporting that they are being pelted upon by arrows but Yansho would dismiss this as his opposition becoming desperate and "losing nobility." Yansho's arrogance however led to some of his men stationed outside of his camp to be within firing range of the arrows and were downed.

Right Path, Marshland Deltas

Most of Yansho's troops had already marched the distance closing the gap between the area they covered with their own men and the oncoming Blade forces. Yansho's men were equipped with with swords and shields and they already began the onslaught against the Wrecker contingent. The Wreckers, led by Rikkou did not let up as with their gauntlets, they smashed the ground causing a shockwave, launching their opponents midair for them to land uppercuts to ensure they are neutralized. While the Wreckers were decimating the advance force, the ambush troops of Yansho began their advance in an attempt to surround the Wreckers. This was a mistake as a detachment of Liger's snipers were shooting covering fire to halt the advancing foes or demoralize from charging forth.

Blade Main Camp

Liger's snipers were pelting the enemy main camp with arrows. Liger then realized that since the front of the camp was poison grass. Perhaps there was a way to neutralize it. He then signaled his snipers to begin pelting the poison grass between their camps with the fire arrows. Some of the arrows landed in the water surrounding the marshlands, while others found their mark and burned down the grass.

Gerard had already given the snipers and some of the units with scarves to avoid breathing in the fumes of fire combined with the poison spores. As Pattou himself led the advance, the threat of poison grass was no longer of issue.

Pattou: Liger, have your men burn down the rest of the poison grass. We will charge along the path created from the burned grass shortly.

Liger: Got it Lord Patriarch, snipers on my lead. Fire!

Liger's snipers continued burning the path of poison grass until Pattou and his unit of knights would begin creeping closer to Governor Yansho's main camp.

Pattou: Knights, scarves up, ready the antidote for possible after-effects

Yansho Main Camp

One of Governor Yansho's strategists ran into the tent, Governor Yansho said,

Yansho: We are winning now aren't we?

Yansho Strategist 1: Sire, if only that were the news, I would not be running. We are seeing smoke and fire in the direction to our front. Some of our men stationed near the camp were downed by enemy arrows. The enemy seems to be burning down the poison grass in order to charge onto us directly.

Yansho: -stood up- What?

He then emerged from his tent and saw that the fire and smoke are fast approaching the camp.

Yansho: Get some of our forces and bring them back here!

As he said this, the strategist responded back, Yansho Strategist 1: Sire, all the remaining forces aside from those surviving in the camp have already marched far to the right to decimate on their camp.

Yansho: -snapped back-Then go run to them and get them back here!

The strategist nodded and saluted, running towards the right path.

Yansho: You ignoble fool. I knew that you're nothing but a fake. I shall prepare for you to meet your end here.

As he said this, Yansho had gathered the remaining soldiers to prepare for a head-on assault.

Right Path, Marshland Deltas.

As the clash between Wreckers and Yansho soldiers was going on, the ambush troops began reinforcing their front line before the other Yansho soldiers can keep up to overwhelm the Wrecker unit. They assume that as the archers load the next arrow, it would give them a reprieve to close the gap. The assumption was broken once Riff and the peasants had arrived to provide more space with Riff strumming "sound wave" walls to push Yansho's men back, while the peasants used the spears they received from Gerard's provisions.

In the ensuing chaos, Yansho's strategist almost reached some soldiers, but was unable to relay Yansho's orders. Sayfuro had suddenly leapt close to him after dispatching some of Yansho's soldiers and assassinated the strategist, before returning to do his part in decimating Yansho's forces.

Yansho Main Camp

Yansho was waiting nervously as he had expected more soldiers to advance, but it was all for naught as none of his men from the advance forces had returned. Still clinging to his notion of nobility, he kept up his arrogance. That arrogance however melted upon seeing the patch of poison grass closest to his main camp burning. He saw that the grass had yet to burn down until the patch became scorched earth, this gave him time to consider charging to the right path and attempt to aid his own men in thwarting the rival advance forces.

This was not to be as he heard marching from the right path, with Sayfuro arriving first. Behind him were Riff and Rikkou, along with a united front of peasants and Wrecker champions. The snipers by command had returned to Liger.

Yansho was exuding fear and his bravado had reduced. What occurred in front of him did not help reduce the fear he is facing. The last patch of poison grass had already burned down and the earth had cooled down, with Pattou and his Western Knights marching behind him. Pattou had already signaled for Liger's snipers to halt the arrows and guard the main camp with Gerard.

Pattou then calls out Governor Yansho,

Pattou: Governor, this is Lord Patriarch Blade. Leader and head of the Blade clan. Your men have already lost. From one noble to another, would it not be prudent to lay down your arms to save face?

Governor Yansho, with his sword drawn and with what remains of his men shouted,

Yansho: You fiend! You are nothing more than a fraud. I will thwart you in the name of both Corrvin and my own noble name!

Pattou then interrupts Yansho,

Pattou: You should be ashamed of yourself, 'Noble' Yansho. You claim and cling onto Nobility as if it were some justification over your inconsideration to the plight of your citizens. Corrvin may have appointed you to that post but it goes to show once again, Corrvin merely seeks to irk the people to retain his rule. And the honor and glory in your head, is actually more of Corrvin's the more you act like this

Yansho: -incensed- Enough! I will cut you down like the cretin that you are .

Yansho then signals his men to advance towards Pattou. Pattou with the Legacy Sword drawn beforehand would lead the charge with the Western Knights and the clash between nobles began. Needless to say, Yansho's men were easily dispatched and joined in surrounding the two nobles.

As Yansho attempted strikes and slashes with his sword, Pattou had an answer with every parry and counter to Yansho's strikees. Yansho would frantically shout as he attempted his strikes,

Yansho: You know not nobility you fraud. I am noble, I will survive and defeat you all!

Pattou was able to parry away then was ready to deliver the finishing blow. Positioning himself and when Yansho's vertical slash was parried away, Pattou would then slash in a rotating clockwise striking him in the midsection. Yansho would then go down to the ground, begging for mercy,

Yansho: Lord Patriarch. Please, noble to noble. Let me live! Corrvin only put me here to incite anger of the people to justify the use of force to crush them. I only did my part. Please let me go!

Pattou would then turn his back, Yansho thought he could take down the young leader by reaching out to a dagger hidden in his cloak. But Pattou out of foresight would strike at him with a reverse moon slash, ending the Governor of Southern Torrs then and there. Pattou could only say,

Pattou: Quite a shame that you would besmirch nobility like this. You are merely noble by name and cling to that fantastical notion. But this feat to bring all walks of life together, is more noble than any monarch can do. - turns to his men and shouts- Southern Torrs now belongs to the Blade Empire!

All present had cheered on in victory.

The victory celebration was short lived as a falcon sniper with a missive had arrived towards the location of Pattou. He read the message and halted the cheers,

Pattou: My friends, we must return quickly to Southern Torrs. Liger and Gerard have returned with some of our men. Corrvin's men are currently attacking the farmlands and Rikkou's encampment.

Rikkou had snapped, he ran back along with his Wreckers detachment first. Pattou and the others soon followed suit.

That was a lot and a long Chapter 14

Anyway in comes the A/N

Governor Yansho is based on Han dynasty historical figure Yuan Shao

Mostly his portrayal in Dynasty Warriors but made him more of an ignorant noble here lol.

Also the fight scenes above was inspired by my days of playing Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors and Warriors Orochi.

In fact, the music I was listening to while writing this was this one,

So... hope you all enjoyed.
