(8) The End Is Only The Beginning

"Everything is going to be better."

My mother's words swirled around in my mind that night, I sat out onto the roof of Grandmother's house and looked out at the city beyond me.

So much has happened in the last few months that I don't even know how I'm going to go back to living my normal life again. I found a pyrokenietic anti-hero... who happened to be my sister that I never knew I had, then my supposed Father returned to be a villain wanting to become God, and I met my mother - in what felt like forever - since I was separated from her. Now that Nightshade is dead, my mother says things will be better.
A sudden noise jolted me from my train of thought, Hana opened the window and stepped out onto the roof. She walked over and sat down next to me.

"Hey." She smiled softly as she brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "What are you doing out here all alone?" She asked, her question burned in my heart. I shrugged.
"I was just thinking." I replied, being as vague as possible.

"Thinking about what?" She pressed on, a shiver tingling down my back.
"...About the last few months..., how I don't know how to go back to having a normal life anymore." I spoke softly and slowly. A smile grew upon her face before she abruptly let out a laugh.

"Normal? Is there such a thing?" She laughed, the corners of my mouth turned up to form a slight smile. "Being abnormal is what makes life fun and interesting!" She extended her arm, pushing my shoulder back a bit in a playful sense.

"Aren't you afraid... of what people might think of us after what happened?" I cocked my head to the side.

"Nah. If anyone gives you a hard time, then that means that they're jealous that they don't have an evil dad that come after them trying to kill them and take over the world." My smile grew wider, I couldn't help but laugh at her comment.

"I suppose you're right." I raised my hand to the back of my head and rubbed it gently. Hana's smile widened as she placed her hands upon her hips and puffed out her chest.

"Of course, I'm right! I'm ALWAYS right!" We both let out a laugh at the same time. "Now, you should get inside quickly. Gran said that she was going to start showing off your embarrassing photos to mother if you didn't get inside within an hour." She turned casually serious for a moment, waving her finger at me.

"I'll be in in a bit, tell grandmother not to show anything. Stall her if you have to." I pleaded, knowing she probably wouldn't do it. She simply gave me a smile before slipping back into the house through the open window.

I remained outside. I pulled my legs to my chest before wrapping my arms around them as if hugging them, I sighed and looked up at the sky. I've always tried to imagine how my life would be like if Nightshade never separated my mother and sister from my grandparents and I. And now, it was happening, I finally had the family of my dreams. I smiled slightly as I looked down to my feet.

"I should go now." I mumbled to myself, barely audible. A small smile formed upon my face as I thought about my family.

Unraveling my arms, I used them to push off against the roof and stand up. Once I was standing, I turned and slipped through the open window, closing it after landing safely in the room.

I stared up at the ceiling of my room, that I now shared with Hana. Today was a new day, a fresh start. I turned my head to face Hana's bed, to my surprise, she wasn't there.

"She must've gotten a headstart to the day." I thought to myself as I pushed off against the side of my bed, slowly sitting up into an upright position.

Dragging myself into the kitchen, I slumped down onto a chair and looked across the table. My grandmother sat across from me, she had a teacup of hot brown liquid in front of her and a cream cloth bandage taped to her forehead. She was focused on one of her morning puzzles from the daily newspaper.

My mother sat perpendicular to her, she was busy munching on a piece of blackened toast and reading the daily funnies to notice my pressence. Hana was not there. Her spot was empty and my heart began to race, what if something had happened to her?

After breakfast, I decided to go for a walk. The wind blew through my hair as I walked along the quaint streets of the town. I inhaled and took a deep breath of the good ole city air.

My nose twitched as it caught a wiff of smoke. Oh no. My heart began to race as my mind lead to the idea that Hana might be in trouble. I turned my head to the direction of the smoke and began running towards it, praying, hoping that Hana wasn't in trouble.

"Hana!" I called out as the smell of smoke got stronger than before. "Hana?" I slowed my pace before coming to a stop, I had hit a dead end in a darkened alleyway.

...I don't understand...

I investigated the wall that cut me off from moving forward, it seemed to be a normal wall and nothing felt off about it. Feeling a pair of eyes on me, I spun around 180° and narrowed my eyes.

"Show yourself! I know you're there!" I yelled out, hoping that someone was there and that I was not just going crazy.

"Awe. You're no fun." I felt a brush of wind behind me before a familiar voice spoke out. I slowly turned around to face a female in a red and silver spandex super suit.

"Hana?" I tilted my head, "is that you?" I blinked a few times before straightening up my head again.

"It's Solar Flare." She corrected me, the corners of my mouth lifted up into a small smirk as I knew that it was her.

"Well, Solar Flare." I pulled my arms behind my back, "if you don't get moving, you'll be late for your first day of school." I spoke with a motherly like tone.

"Ha. You're funny." She let out a small laugh. "Anti-heroes don't do school."

"They do if they don't want grandmother to show all their friends their embarrassing baby photos." I smirked.

"You're bluffing... Mindlocke." She narrowed her eyes, leaning in closer to me.

"Maybe I am. Maybe I'm not. You'll have to wait and see." I pressed my pointer finger against her forehead and gently pushed her back. "Now if you'll excuse me, my family is waiting for me back home." I then turned away from her and began my walk back home, not stopping to turn back to look at her.

I returned home to find Hana lounging on the couch.

"Have a nice walk?" She asked bluntly, not caring to look up away from her cellular device.

"Yeah. I met a new super." I walked over to her, lifting her legs up so that I could sit down.

"Oh?" She still didn't look up, allowing me to slip under her legs without a fight.

"Yeah." I sat down into the soft cushions before gently laying her legs back down and onto my lap. "Apparently they're an anti-hero called Solar Flare."

"Interesting." Hana nodded slowly, still glued to the device.

"I think we'll be seeing a lot of her in the future." A soft smile formed upon my face.

"Should be fun for Mindlocke." Hana responded, putting down her phone and looking over to me.

We both smiled at each other, sharing a new sibling moment that will surely be one of many to come.

And that is how my deepest, most beloved dream came true: how I finally found my family.
