Chapter 9

Josephine was helping clear the table from the breakfast she has made much to the disapproval of the houses head maid.

Brandon watched her with soft eyes, his gaze tracking her movements across the room as she gathered up plates. "Must you watch my sister in such a manner with me present?" Louis asked in a groan. "I would apologize but I am truly not that sorry. If you would like you can turn away," Brandon offered with a cheeky grin flashing across his face.

"Josephine!" Ida's voice cut through the serene silence that filled the house, Brandon noticed the way Josephine's shoulders slumped down at hearing her mom call. She quickly stood up though, ceasing the help she was giving the maids.

She straightened her back as she held her head higher, Ida walking into the room. "There you are." She said almost like she was exhausted with her daughter. A small frown tugged Josephine's lips, wondering why her mom seemed upset with her. "We must get to the modest, get you a dress for tomorrow night." Ida said with a smile on her face, ah yes the Vauxhall celebration would be a event of a lifetime one that Josephine wouldn't mind missing out on.

Ida took hold of her daughter's arm as she lead her towards the door. Louis and Brandon walking closer that way. "Miss Josephine Rowlington, will I see you tomorrow at the celebration?" Brandon asked, addressing her properly since her mother was there. Ida looking over quickly with widened eyes at the Duke's voice. "You will, Brandy." Josephine said with a pleased smile on her face at the horrified look Ida gave her.

"You do not address his grace in such a manner you would with Eloise or Dahlia. She is very sorry Your Grace." Ida quickly apologized to Brandon but he was just grinning at the affectionate nickname that Josephine had given to him.

"It is quite alright Lady Rowlington, I do not take offense to Josie's words." He flashed her a sweet smile, Ida relaxed slightly as she looked towards Josephine, who had a challenging look in her narrowed eyes as a small smile crossed  her face. Ida glanced between the two before she smiled softly. "The modest, my darling?" Ida now spoke in such a sweet manner towards her daughter.

"Yes, i suppose we should." Josephine said as she took a step back towards the door, her eyes lingering on Brandon a hint longer before she turned away and out the door with Ida and their loyal maid following as a chaperone.

"I think she is starting to like me, what do you think?" Brandon smiled as he looked towards Louis. The eldest Rowlington rolling his dark eyes. "I think I will be sick if I keep hearing about it." He joked slightly, his words partly true as he shook his head.

At the modest, Josephine let her mom do the talking as she stood off to the side. Her head bowed slightly as she looked at her shoes. "Josephine, correct?" Estella asked as she walked up to her side. The other woman looked towards her with a almost distant hum as her mind was else where. "Oh, um, yes." She said with a soft smile. "I'm Estella. I have yet to  formally met you, I have met your brother Louis though."

Josephine nods some. "It's a pleasure, I hope my brother has not given you any grief. He can be a bit...stoic." She used such a polite word to describe her at times cold brother. A soft laugh leaving Stella's throat. "Not at all, I doubt he could. I would be more trouble then he."

"Oh?" Josephine's eyes lit up with intrest in this mystery woman who posed to be as much of a head strong, independent woman as herself. "You seem far to intrigued with me being trouble. I simply do not like the rules that society has set for us, woman that is." Estella laughed a bit at the beginning but her voice grew serious.

"I agree, it is rather unfair but I am starting to find some perks in the situation." Josephine spoke with a faint pink tinting her cheeks. "Could that be the rescue that The Midnight Sun had printed, is what they say true? Did His Grace, Brandon Edgerton really protect you?" Estella lowered her voice as she asked. The slightly older woman wished desperately for that paper to be more them just meaningless gossip.

"I think he would have protected anyone. He seems the type to play the hero."  Josephine said as she looked towards the ground, a slightly sheepish look dashing across her eyes. "Well, he seems to come to your rescue when you need him. How very gallant of him." A small smirk twitched up Estella's lips.

Molly was walking up to the Rowlington household, hoping to find Josephine inside but the blonde girl was unaware that she was at the modest, making a new friend in the process.

Having been lead into the drawing room she was met with only Ida and Elmer, the older woman sitting off to the side as she worked on needlework. Elmer looked up to see the girl, a small smirk dancing across his face.

He stood up as she walked closer, rather speaking to him then the Rowlingtons mother. "Miss Blake." He greeted formally as his eyes glanced towards his mother as he was expected to be nothing but a gentleman when in the presence of a lady. "Mister Rowlington." Molly gave him a kind, soft smile as she gave him a quick curtsy. Molly sat down on the couch next to him. "Where is Josephine?" She asked curiously.

"She's at the modest." Elmer replied with a laugh leaving his lips.,"What do you want with her?" He inquired curiously as he leaned forward slightly, his striking eyes locked onto her enough to make a soft pinks dust her cheeks.

"She's my frien-" Molly started but Elmer cut her off with a shake of his head. "No you are not her friend, she does not really have friends as she prefers it that way. Even if Josephine was in the habit of making friends it would not be you. You are to alike to Clara." Elmer stated in such a factly manner.

A look of brief anger crossed her face at how Elmer spoke to her. "But that is her sister." Molly said as she shifted in her seat some. The boy shrugging his shoulders simply. "Sometimes family do not get along. She does not even like me half the time." He chuckled.

Molly herself had to admit that she sometimes didn't like the boy, and this was proving to be one of those times as he seemed to belive that he knew everything about his family. The way their minds worked, who they would be friends with. The young man was quite challenging to get along with at times but at others he was simply so sweet and charming, Molly be one of the ones who was drawn to his honey like personality on those days.

Lady Violet Bridgerton  had invited Simon to dinner. The crowd as talkative as usual. "Haven't you heard what we're talking about?" Anthony  said to all of them. "For all we know, Whistledown may maybe some interloper living in Bloomsbury, of all places."

"What's so terrible about Bloomsbury? That people there actually work for a living?" Benedict fired back as he looked towards his older brother. "She does seem seem to someone with access." Daphne commented before going back to her food.

"Who knows if Whistledown is even a she?" Colin asked, glancing around the table. "Fair point." Anthony agreed. Eloise looking towards them. "Because she is simply too good to be anyone but a man? Josephine can write poetry better then any of you men coul." She asked looking towards Colin and Benedict. Colin giving her a smile as Benedict made a sarcastic face at her.

"Well, I think it's rather obvious that the writer is Lady Danbury." Francesca said making Simon smile slightly as he raised the glass to his lips. "Lady Danbury enjoys sharing her insults with society directly. She would never bothered herself with writing them all down." Daphne said with amusement

"Could it be Lady Featherington?" Hyacinth asked, the whole table laughing ass they answered together. "No." Eloise leaned forward slightly. "You have yet to read what Whistledown writes of the Featheringtons, little sister."

"You must forgive this rather unruly debate, Your Grace." Violet apologized to Simon in behalf of her children. "Nonsense. I find it entertaining." He said making the woman relax some with a smile. "All of you at one table, even the children." Simon said in a softer tone, almost wistful.

"Well, I realize it may be unfashionable, but we like each other." Violet said with a soft chuckle. "Most of the time. You should join us more often, Your Grace. Perhaps when we travel to our country seat. You would be most welcome." She added as Gregory launched a pea across the table at Hyacinth.

"Gregory! Would you stop tossing peas at me?" Hyacinth said annoyedly. The smile vanishing from Violet's face. "Those peas were already there. You cannot tell me what to do. I am older." He said sassily. "And I'm taller." Hyacinth shot back. "Children.." Violet said with a soft awkward laugh as they looked towards her, stopping.

Be it shame or slander, seduction or smear
there is but one thing that humbles even the
most highly-regarded members of our dear ton...
a scandal!

Well, dear reader, it should seem that all of
Grosvenor Square has been left to ponder a
rather scandalous question, indeed.
Might one former diamond's fall from grace
turn out to be the most damning scandal of all?

The Bridgerton family sat in the boat as it made its way to the ball that Lady Danbury was hosting. The night alight with lanterns and torches. People dancing happily to the music that played. Philip being one of those who were dancing, being convinced by his mother to dance with at least one Lady there.

Robert going around and speaking charmingly to those around.  The man was a hit with certain women as he was charming and easy on the eyes but none of them seemed to be who he was seeking out.

Gwendolyn was walking through the crowd, stopping to talk with others on occasion, laughing louder then she should at some comments. The girl was actually very kind and a good person to know if given the chance that very few have.

Emilio was walking with Phoebe, the two have grown quite close as the girl tried to play match maker for the man, Phoebe's feelings only growing stronger as time went on and she grew to know him. He was a bit emotionally cold but he still had a kind heart, Phoebe healing him slowly even if she didn't realize that she was.

The Rowlington family walked into the area, Thomas quickly noticing Charles across the way. The boy smiling some as he made his way over to..to..his friend? His love?

Thomas was unsure what to lable  this new feeling, to call what they were but he just knew it was wonderful. Once Thomas reached his side the two slipped away, unnoticed.

Charles's hand moving to his cheek as he pulled Thomas down into a soft kiss. The two standing close together, bodies flush as they seemed to melt together. Their hearts beat as one as their breathing, well soft pants, even seemed to fall in sync. Thomas's eyes closed as his back met the wall, Charles standing in front of him, one hand on Thomas's cheek the other gripping his hip.

Thomas clung tightly to Charles's shirt as he pulled him deep to him, the kiss growing from the gentleness of uncertainty to the fierceness of longing.

Moving from Charles's lips down to his neck, trailing soft kisses along the soft skin. Charles's hands working their way into Thomas's hair, gently tugging on the pieces wrapped around his fingers, drew a low groan from his lips. The sound making Charles blush as he took a shuddering breath.

Thomas ran his teeth along his collar bone, the fire flaring through Charles's body almost too much as his knees wobbled slightly. Thomas took that as a sign to flip them around to where Charles was against the hidden area of the building. The wall and Thomas both working together to keep Charles standing. The soft sounds emitting from both young men where enough to cause a scandal and make Lady Whistledown herself blush.

Colin walked towards Penelope who stood off by herself. "Pen." He greete, the girl curtysing. "Colin. I did not know you would be here." She said with a slightly nervous smile. "Sorry to disappoint." He said with a grin, bringing a small laugh from her. "Have you seen Miss Thompson? Or..I am unsure of her name." He thought back to Abigail.

Penelope's smile faltered slightly but she still told him. "She is ill. My Mama had to stay home with her. Papa had to chaperone. I'm quite enjoying the fact that he is here. Mama would never allow me to wear a dress like this. Not, uh, yellow enough, I think." She rambled with a small chuckle. "How can you be looking for someone who do not know?"

Cressida and her friends walked over, getting between Colin and Penelope. "Mr. Bridgerton. I believe you owe me a dance this evening. And I have only one more space remaining on my card at present." She said flirtatiously.

"How convenient." Penelope commented before gasping as Cressida's drink spilt down her dress. Cressida doing as fake gasp. "Penelope, I did not see you there." Colin looked towards Penelope before looking back towards the blonde. "I'm afraid I cannot offer you that dance, Miss Cowper. I am to escort Miss Featherington to the floor." He said shocking not only Cressida but Penelope as well as he took her hand, leading her to the floor.

The dance floor was moving in sync, Clara having  found Dahlia and the sunshine girl dragging her to the floor. The two girls dancing together though most saw it as friends having some fun, no one noticed the soft blush on both girls faces not even each other.

"Are you not going to dance, my lord?" Estella asked as she walked towards Louis's side. He felt a small thrill at the woman once again choose his company to the other gentlemen of the ton. "I do not dance, I have yet to see you grace the dance floor." He said back with a soft smile resting across his usally stoic face. He enjoyed talking to the woman, she was diffrent then those who seemed to have some intrest in him. "Perhaps i do not dance either." The smirk that rested on her lips was full of mystery and it drew him in.

"Ladies and gentlemen, a most extraordinary event is about to take place. Right this way! Come! Come!" A man announced, gesturing the direction, cutting Louis and Estella's conversation short much to the man's dismay. But he was gladly she waited for him to offer his arm, leading her in the direction the man pointed. The whole party following after him to see this amazing event, all but Simon.

Josephine was walking when Brandon appeared by her side. "Josie." He greeted her with a devilish grin on his face as the girl rolled her eyes with a smile on her face. "Brandy." Her voice was a soft hum as she looked towards him. "May I accompany you to...whatever this may be?" He asked with a sweeter smile on his face. "Yes, you may." She placed her arm through his, not even waiting for the offer as they walked together.

"It is with great privilege that I present Vauxhall's newest spectacle of illuminator. Feast your eyes above and allow all that is radiant to overwhelm you!" He said enthusiastically as a  man lit a fuse. The lights above them twinkling to life as everyone gasped in delight and surprise. The crowd clapping.

Josephine stared up in amazement, her arm dropping from Brandon's arm as she walked forward, her eyes on the lights with a look of pure wonder on her face, Brandon was watching happily. He has rarely seen this sort of unmasked joy and innocence on the girl.

Daphne was looking at them in wonder as Anthony walked up beside her. "Is it not the most bizarre? Look, brother." She said with a happy laugh as she looked towards him. "What is it?" She asked noticing the distressed look on his face.

"Lord Berbrooke's barony is over 200 years old. His lineage is legitimate. He has had an excellent education, possesses no debts, never hurt and animal or a woman, and is even a decent shot. To speak strictly, there is nothing wrong with him." Anthony said as Daphne looked at him with uncertain eyes. "What should any of this--"
"You are to marry him." He answered quickly, cutting her off.

"Nigel?" She almost growled  the name in disgust. "I had to find you a husband, sister. Now, be greatful it is done. It should be just as easy to fall in love with Lord Berbrooke as with anyone else." He told her, thinking he did well. "I will not hear of this." Daphne said angrily as she walked away from him.

Nearing the end of the night, fireworks loudly popped, decorating the sky in colors and flashes of light. Daphne walking back to the party, side by side with The duke himself, Simon Hastings. Violet smiling happily when she saw them. The two moving to the center of the dance floor as they moved closer together. Others dancing around the two as Simon and Daphne moved together.

Josephine looked up towards the sky, with a childlike wonder in her eyes at the lights, hands clamped over her ears to block out the loud noises. Brandon noticed how she flinched each time the boom of the gunpowder went off.

Brandon moved closer to her, at the familiar presence Josephine moved closer to his side, using him as a sort of protective shield. Those who looked at the two did not feel shame, only anger that they did not think of something like that for their daughters to do, gaining the Duke's favor.

Josephine looked up at Brandon, watching the colors of the fireworks shining in his eyes as she moved closer, her side pressed into his as she jumped again at the sudden noise. Feeling her Brandon put his arm around her, pulling her close. He did not care of the looks they would get. What damage could be brought upon the young woman who has already tried to be shamed?

For those not in attendance at the Vauxhall
celebration, you missed the most remarkable
coup of the season.
It appears Miss Daphne Bridgerton has captured the
interest of the newly returned
Duke of Hastings. How the young miss
secured her newfound suitor is yet to be determined.
Yet, if anyone shall reveal the circumstances of this match, it is I.

Yours truly,  Lady Whistledown.
