Chapter 27
A wedding
Josephine had abandoned the clothes of mourning for tonight as she dressed in a simple green dress, nothing close to the manner she used to wear as she raised the color and sleeves.
"That is not what one usually wears when looking for suitors." Clara commented as she appeared in the doorway, her eyes on her younger sister.
"Then it is certainly a good thing I do not wish to attract suitors, having a husband is far to droll thank you." Josephine quipped as she brushed off the dark material. "Besides is Phoebe and Emilio's wedding." She added.
Clara nods her head slightly as she looked lovingly at her sister now. "You are right having a husband is over done, find a wife." She teased with a wink as she linked arms with Josephine and lead her down the stairs. "I admire your braveness Clara but that is not me." Josephine finally cracked a small smile as the two descended the stairs and headed towards the carriage.
The night ahead would be a much needed one for the Rowlington family as they momentarily are pulled out of the darkness before they would be plunged back into it.
The mansion was gorgeous to look at, lights and flowers and drapes. It was exquisite. Everyone who showed up that night couldn't help but gawk in amazement at how it was decorated.
Phoebe was dressed in a beautiful white gown that fluffed out at the bottom, she could hear everyone packing into the pews of the adjacent chapel, it was a small building used for this type of events.
She was taking deep breaths as she prepared for the moment she would walk down the isle go be married to a man she has grown to love so very much. A smile crossing her face as she thought about it.
The music began to play signaling the time for her to walk out. Small gasps of awe filled the crowd as they saw her starting to walk, admiring her in all her beauty. But she didn't hear any of it as her eyes were focused on Emilio who gazed at her with such a loving tenderness.
Phoebe smiled broadly as she looked at her soon-to-be husband, he looked especially dashing tonight though his suit wasn't that different from the ones he wore most days.
The time for the vows has arrived as the two faced each other. "Phoebe, from the moment I met you I knew that you would be special to me. The way I did not know, one I did not expect but am so glad for. Even when you were playing matchmaker you were slowly winning over my heart, a heart I learned was always meant for you. I love you in ways you cannot imagine, I can not wait to spend the rest of my life loving you." He smiled so sweetly at her, raising up his hand to gentle brush away a tear that was forming in her eyes at the manner of his words.
"Emilio..I feel as if I have loved you forever and perhaps I have, since the moment I met you I have cared for you. I used the matchmaking as a excuse to be near you and get to know you with a growing fear that one day you would choose someone. I am very happy that you chose me out of all the young ladies of the ton. I cannot wait for the life we will lead and the family we will have." She said with a smile as another tear feel.
"Stop crying my love or I will cry." Emilio said softly with a teasing smile on his face, reaching up and rubbing his thumbs under her eyes in such a gentle manner. The priest that was marrying them looked between the two. "You may now kiss the bride." He informed so they could join their union completely.
Emilio leaned in and pressed his lips to hers, still cradling her face in his hands. "I will always chose you, in every lifetime my heart will seek out yours again." He spoke in a whisper against her lips as he pulled back, making sure she was the only one to hear the promised words.
Clapping erupted through the crowd as the celebration of Emilio and Phoebe Dueñas started as well as their lives as husband and wife started from this moment on. Josephine clapped happily for them, so glad that they found their way together despite how they originally started out.
The group of wedding goers filed out and into the ballroom of the house, music playing softly as Emilio and Phoebe took this as the time for their first dance. Everyone staying off to the side and watching or talking amongst themselves.
Soon others started to join them on the dance floor, Josephine was pleasantly surprised to see Louis leading Estella out onto the floor. The two looked good together and so very happy.
Estella was smiling softly as Louis and her danced, the man looking down at her with such soft eyes. "I have a question for Estella." He spoke in a low tone of voice so prying ears wouldn't hear. "What is it my Lord?" She inquired with a soft smile on her face, she used the title so teasingly when it came to him and he knew that, he quit liked it actually.
"May I court you?" The question that left his lips maybe her steps faltered as she almost tripped on her feet, the words catching her off guard. A look of slight embarrassment crossed Louis face. "Forget I asked milady." He said as he turned his eyes away from her. "Pity if I remembered that you asked the answer would be yes." She spoke happily as his eyes went back towards her. "Yes? Are you certain?" He asked as a smile started to cross his own face.
"Of course I am certain, you have no idea how I've been waiting for you to ask." She laughed softly at the look of utter surprise and delight that crossed his face upon her agreeing.
The night seemed so well for all those who found their one even if they were not together yet. Josephine stood alone off to the side as her siblings were all elsewhere. "You look very charming in emerald." A voice spoke from her side, her eyes flickering over to see Bennett, his eyes going to the crowd. "Thank you." She replied in a polite manner.
"Do you dance?" He asked as he gestured towards the dance floor. "No." She lied, if she was asked properly and by the right person then maybe she would but not like this with him. "Very well, I can keep you company on the side." He smiled at her as he now stepped closer to her and away from the dancefloor.
Bennett stood silently beside her, his eyes on occasion flickering towards her but he didn't speak as she didn't. The Duke was a kind man under all his flirtations but you had to get to know him to see that.
Thomas wasn't at this event, spending some time with Charles at the country home but Josephine wished he was there to be the one she could talk to instead of the Duke currently at her side.
Molly was dancing with Elmer, the two swaying to the music, they followed the steps as well as adding some of their own to the dance.
Everything was so perfect, the night was young as music constantly played, fast and slow. Laughter rang through the halls. Louis had pulled Josephine along to dance, circles forming on the dance floor as each one linked hands and spun, dancing with those they looked across to before finding a different spot in the circle.
Josephine stood between Louis and Bennett, the man having followed them onto the floor. Even then she was smiling a bit as they spun around.
The world came crashing down as the newest copy of Lady Whistledown was currently being distributed across the ton. The scandal writer having been silent for a while but she seemed to have made her return, much to the disappointment to some members of the ton but the truth would come out eventually but it brought about another wave of hated towards the unknown woman from Josephine.
Low-key forgot about Lady Whistledown and The Midnight Sun XD
