Interrogation

Tris was sitting in an old computer chair, Truth Serum running through her veins.

But I wasn't afraid in the slightest. We'd already worked out the lie she'd tell, and as much as I know I read doing it to help her - us - it made me sad knowing just how well she could lie.

After all, it's that gift that created the fights and the tension amongst us all those times.

I couldn't push myself to look at her in that chair for very long. All it did was remind me of how I sat in a similar one at least a month ago and spilled all if my secrets, all of my insecurities to a room full of people that just ended up mocking me for it.

I cannot stand the Candor.

"I think you're all idiots." Tris's words bring me back to reality. She's leaving in her chair and my mother is staring her in the face, trying to find any reason to convict her. She never did like her. "You should be thanking me,nit questioning me."

"We should thank you for defying the instructions of your Faction leaders? Thank you for trying to prevent one of your Faction leaders from killing Jeanine Matthews? You behaved like a traitor." My mother spits the words as if they were made of pure poison.

I'm standing behind her, partially hidden in the shadows so that Tris and the others can't see the look of resentment on my face.

For my mother, for what we've gotten ourselves into.

As much ad I hate seeing Tris in this situation, I glance into her eyes very briefly, silently telling her that now is the time to start lying.

"I am not a traitor." Tris says. "At the time I believed that Marcus was working under Dauntless-factionless orders. Since I couldn't join the fight as a soldier, I was happy to help with something else."

"Why couldn't you be a soldier?" Evelyn asks.

"Because." she pauses like she doesn't know what to say but I know the real reason why she's doing it: to make it appear that she's attempting to hold her words back.

She is too good at this.

"Because I couldn't hold a gun, okay? Not after shooting... Him. My friend Will. I couldn't hold a gun without panicking." She says.

Evelyn sounds annoyed when she speaks again. "So Marcus time you he was working under my orders," she says, "and even knowing what you do about his rather tense relationship with both the Dauntless and the Factionless, and you believed him?"

"Yes."

"I can see why you didn't choose Erudite." she laughs.

I have the sudden urge to snap a muzzle on her, mother or not. Whether she knows it or not, Tris is still my girlfriend and I do not like it when people insult her.

"Why didn't you tell anyone about this?" Evelyn says.

"I didn't want to have to admit to any weakness," Tris says. "And I didn't want Four to know I read working with his father. I knew he wouldn't like it."

I cringe when she uses my Nickname. I sounds so far away coming from her.

I'm only Tobias to her now.

Even though technically, both of them are dead and gone.

"I brought you the truth about our city and the reason we are in it. If you aren't thanking me for it, you should at least do something about it instead of sitting here in this mess you made, pretending it's a throne!" She shouts angrily.

Evelyn, obviously pissed, leans towards Tris's face.

I can tell that she's saying something to her but as much as I strain, I can't hear what she's saying.

Eventually though, she steps back and says. "The truth Serum had revealed that while you may be a fool, you are no traitor. This interrogation is over. You may leave."

"What about my friends." Tris asks. "Christina and Cara. They didn't do anything wrong either."

"We will deal with them soon," Evelyn says.

Then Tris stands but she sways on her feet and I have to suppress the urge to run over to help her.

Fortunately enough, I don't have to. Uriah is over there in record time. He takes her arm and walks her to a door.

I think about making up a lie for my mother and going after her to congratulate her lb convincing Evelyn, but decide that it's probably better for me to stay here especially after her interrogation. Evelyn probably expects me to be upset at her, so that is the facade I will put up, at least for tonight.

But tomorrow, I will go to Tris, and when I do, I'll tell her my thoughts on leaving the city.

Something tells me our situation is about to get a thousand times worse.
