Genetically-Damaged: Part Three

The rest of the training session goes surprisingly well and I feel like Nita and I will be good friends. She's a good teacher. Not too strict but nothing gets pass her.  She makes sure I know everything about my gear in and out before we move on to more complicated things, like missions and the like.

Although something about how she discussed the missions made me somewhat suspicious.

"Do you go to a variety of places," I asked after she pauses in her rundown, "or just one?"

She bit her lip softly, probably thinking I wouldn't notice, but years of observing people's body language in Dauntless has trained my eye to see that kind of thing. "It varies..depending on what David perseves as most important."

"David is the head of everything?"

"Yes.  He calls all the shots."

"Meaning that if I had a question, I'd go to him?" I inquired.

"Yes."

My mind instantly flashed back to when I couldn't get into the elevator.  I wanted to ask her about it but I didn'r want her to beat around the bush again.

I decided against it.

Now it's almost time for the lunch hour and I can hardly wait - this is one of the only times I get to see Tris.

I stand from my sitting position on my bed and make my way to the cafeteria.

I spot Tris instantly - she's hard to miss in her pristine white outfit next to the many black ones.

She seems me too and walks out of line, engulfing me in a hug.

"I missed you." She says, her words slightly muffled by my shirt.

"I missed you too." I say. "I barely talk to you."

"David's research shouldn't go on that much longer." She says, smiling.

Then it hits me.

The best person to ask about my denied access other than David, is Tris.

She spends basically every day with him so she probably knows all of the rules and regulations of the Bureau.

We get our food and sit at one off the tables.

I let her start eating before I start with my string of questions.

"Do you know why I can't go upstairs?" Is the first one I ask.

She thinks about it for a second before answering. "Only Genetically-Pures can go on the upper levels."

Her words are like a punch to the stomach. "That implies that I'm the opposite."

She nods slowly. "Genetically-Damaged."

I frown.  "Why?  What makes a person Pure or Damaged?"

"It's all in genes.  Chicago has an entire population of damaged people while the Bureau has mostly Pures."

"How did you turn out Pure?"

"Because of my mother. She was from here." She says.

"Where'd you get that information from?"

"David-"

"And you just believe him right off the back?" I ask.  That doesn't sound like something she'd do normally.

"I've grown to trust him." She says.

"Oh really?  On accounts of what?" I ask. He sounds sketchy and I wouldn't trust him in a minute.

"He showed me her memories - I got to live through one of them through her eyes."

"Just be careful okay.  I don't want you to get in too deep with him just to have him throw it up in your face."

"Don't worry, it's all backed up by proof." she assures me.

I pray that she's telling the truth.
