I sit on the edge of the bed, clenching my hands together, hoping Garte doesn't get any letter before I do. Everett still hasn't come back yet, and I begin to get worried. It's been about 2 days, and his parents have told the guards, who told Garte about the fact that he was missing. I pray to Irene he doesn't send out a missing person report.
I hear the door creak open. My husband walks in, running his hands through his hair. His cheeks look flushed, his eyes appear to be bloodshot.
"Did you sleep at all last night?" My voice cracks.
Garte walks over to the sink, turning on the water. He shakes his head in response to my question. He takes his hands, cupping them and letting the water fill his hands. He splashes it against his face and then takes a white towel, drying his face and walking over to me.
"D-Did you find Everett?" I stutter, trying to spike up friendly conversation without acting suspicious.
"No." Garte says. "We have no idea where he is, and the last place anyone saw him was the manor. If he ends up dead, everyone's gonna blame us."
"But you did nothing-"
"Do you really think the people are gonna believe that?!" He cuts me off, raising his voice. I become startled, wanting to cover my ears.
"Zianna, if everyone thinks that we're responsible for his death then that means everyone thinks I'm a tyrant! I'd get everything taken away, including you and the boys!" He talks at such a fast pace that I can barely understand him. It's something he does when he gets fairly nervous.
Garte paces around the room, biting his lip so hard that I'm afraid he'll make it bleed. He seems to be pulling his sandy blonde hair. I have to be careful with my words, he'll get angry if I say even one thing wrong.
"M-Maybe I could help the guards look for him?" I ask cautiously.
In reality, I'm really looking for an excuse to see Theodore. Even though I really do want to find Everett, I know he went in the direction of Theodore's house.
"Are you fucking crazy?!" He almost screams. I jump, tears flooding my eyes
"Do you really think, that, if someone out there is missing and I'm practically losing my reputation, that I'm going to let my wife out?!" He exclaims, I assume ready to get physical to "teach a lesson".
Then, I see Leo appear in the doorway, looking shocked at the scene, but hiding it behind his tough look. He gently knocks in the doorway, biting the inside of his cheek and trying to look as though he is helpless and practically worshiping the Lord of O'Khasis.
"S-Sir, we still haven't found Everett..." He says timidly.
"Goddammit..." Garte mumbles to himself.
"Sir, if I may?" Leo asks, stepping up and asking to speak.
"Go ahead, Leo." Garte says, looking out the window and not even glancing at either of us.
"W-Well, Zianna is very quick on her feet and she knows how to use several weapons. Maybe it would be a good idea for her to... help us?" Leo suggests softly, hoping he doesn't get yelled at or possibly fired.
Garte turns around and glares at both of us, but primarily Leo. Leo looks down, squeezing his eyes shut and hoping he doesn't get in trouble. Garte walks up to him. Leo stands up straight, trying to look like a man. Garte furrows his eyebrows.
"Fine. If you want it that bad." Garte lets out a gruff breath, turning and exiting out the door.
I take a deep breath. Turning to Leo, his body is still tense from the whole event that just happened. I feel bad for him, he used to look up to Garte a lot. In fact, Garte used to treat him like a son, or a little brother. He looks up at me with fearful, yet thankful for the fact that nothing terrible happened.
"I guess you kind of have to go, m'lady..." He says very guardedly.
"Thank you, Leo. I really wanted to go." I say, hoping he feels better about the whole situation.
We stand quiet for a moment, soaking in the sweet silence. I lean back on the bed frame, looking at Leo. He wants to say something, I can see it not only in his eyes, but his body language as well.
"Are you okay, Leo?" I ask, hoping nobody hears me.
"I don't like how he's changing, m'lady." He whispers, turning around to leave.
"Believe me, I don't like it either." I reply, nodding and averting my eyes to the floor.
Leo shakes his head, stopping just past the frame of the white door. He turns around and looks at me, softly smiling. Soft wrinkles form just right next to his eyes when he smiles. I smile back, slightly pressing my lips together.
"I'll see you tomorrow, Lady Zianna. We have a long day ahead of us." He shuts the door and I hear footsteps fade away.
I sigh, laying down on the bed and looking outside the window. The bright yellow sun lights up the baby blue sky. I smile to myself.
I can't wait to get out of here.
