Chapter 15
I woke up soaked in sweat and gasping for air. This was one of the most intense nightmares I'd ever had. Leaves crunched under me as I ran through the forest, my breath coming fast.
I could feel someone behind me, their presence like a lingering chill in my bones. "Turn around and face me," I heard the voice say. I finally stopped, legs trembling and turned around.
Vincent stood in front of me, his body shimmering. "What do you want?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper. He didn't say anything else, just extended his hand.
My hand trembled slightly as I took it. He then lead me deeper into the forest, where a familiar nightmare came to life.
Zach was standing beside my corpse with an eerie smile on his face. This time, though, a new face appeared, this one also familiar, but with a horrified expression as she saw my corpse.
She whirled around, her eyes spitting fire as she pinned her gaze on Zach. "How could you do this? We trusted you!" Mom shouted.
Zach smirked. "Surprise. I was only pretending to be on your side. I'll never forget what happened that night."
A mix of anger and sadness darkened Mom's expression as the words left his mouth. "No. You don't get to make this about you. She was my sister." Her voice broke.
I blinked, forcing myself back to the present. My mind was on autopilot as I got dressed and left my room. Dad was already dressed and eating breakfast when I walked into the kitchen.
A concerned expression appeared on his face as he looked at me. "Bella? What's wrong?"
I looked at him and my face paled. How was I going to explain this? "Dad... I have to tell you something." My hands shook as I sat down at the kitchen table and explained. An hour later, I finished.
Dad's expression was blank. He hadn't said a word the whole time I spoke. "I'm so sorry."
I stood up, walking outside. "Are you okay?" I asked him. He shook his head.
I could feel his gaze on me as I left the house. White-hot fury burned through me like lava. Unsurprisingly, I soon heard footsteps behind me. "What do you want, Zach?" My voice was tired as I turned around.
But it wasn't Zach standing in front of me. It was Tara. Her face was pale and tear-streaked. "I'm so sorry," she whispered. I shook my head, confused. Then it hit me: she knew about Zach.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked, my voice shaking slightly.
She shook her head, avoiding my gaze. "I wanted to. But you were dealing with your mom's death, and I didn't want to upset you more."
I scoffed. "Really? How'd that work out for you?" My voice had a bitter edge to it. "We trusted him. We trusted you." My voice broke on the last word. Her expression was heartbroken as she looked at me.
"I could apologise for the rest of my life and it still wouldn't be enough. I'm so, so sorry, Bella." Her own voice broke as her eyes welled up with tears.
"I just had to explain to my father how one of his oldest friends had betrayed him. Do you know how hard that was for me? And yes, I am still grieving. I'll grieve for the rest of my life because my mom won't be here. She won't be here to see my wedding and she won't be here to see her first grandchild. Your father did that."
She looked at me, tears streaming down her face. "You know, my dad has never forgotten what happened the night they first met."
A confused expression appeared on my face. "I don't know what you're talking about."
She shook her head, anger darkening her features. "Your mom was sighted at the spot of a major vampire massacre. Hundreds of our people were slaughtered in the dead of night."
I scoffed, unable to believe what I was hearing. "You think my mom was responsible? If you believe that, I guess we're not meant to be friends after all."
I turned around, my heart breaking as I walked away. As hard as it was, I kept telling myself I did the right thing. At the last minute, I turned around. "My mother was the kindest, gentlest person I've ever met. Unlike your father, she actually cared about her friends."
I felt, more than saw, the blow land. Tara's face darkened, then she turned on her heel and walked away. As soon as she disappeared, I broke down sobbing. The whole way home, I couldn't stop seeing the look on Tara's face.
Needless to say, I couldn't sleep at all that night. My fight with Tara kept flashing through my head. I finally managed to doze off minutes before my alarm went off the next morning.
As I woke up the next morning, Mom's picture caught my eye. I realised something as I stared at her picture. All this time I'd been lost in my last memories of Mom- the bad ones- but now, I realised, I have her own memories right in front of me. Dad, Grandma. They can help honour her memory. That's good enough for me.
