Kaitlyn's limbs had become numb. She stretched as much as she could from her vantage point behind a large conifer, taking care not to expose her position. While it was dark and the forest was thick with trees, she knew any little movement could be noticed by the wrong eyes should they look in her direction.

They had taken the long route through the forest making sure to keep down wind of the estate. For the others the trip had been easy, the lack of light had not affected them. Kaitlyn, however, had not such advantage. Her eyesight, while having 20/20 vision, was nowhere near as superior as the Werewolves, and she spent the first part of the trek bumping into trees and tripping over exposed roots.

Her distress at slowing the others down must have been evident when she noticed Murphy's wolf had begun to walk alongside her. It wasn't long before they caught up to Tim, who appeared to be waiting for them.

"He wants you to hold on to his mane," he said in a low voice. "He'll guide you through. We still have a way to go."

Kaitlyn shook her head. "No. He needs to be up front to guide the rest of you."

There was a short silence as Murphy's wolf gave Tim further instructions. "Joshua knows where we're going," Tim said, repeating the wolf's instruction, "Besides, he said you are of no use to anyone if you fall and break something."

The rest of the trek went smoothly and without incident. Kaitlyn held on to Murphy's wolf fur as he deftly guided her to their destination. She was thankful for the warmth his thick coat provided her in the otherwise chilly night.

Kaitlyn was impatient for their assault on the house. The wait was almost killing her. Risking exposure, she glanced around the tree that was hiding her from view. She could barely make out the house in the distance. Luck had been on their side when clouds had formed in the night sky, obscuring the light from the crescent moon. While it made their approach through the dense woods slower, it ensured they had a less chance of exposure.

Throughout her years in the F.B.I, she had been on more than her fair share of raids and stakeouts. It was part of the job and after a while had become second nature. This time, things were different. Never before had she been as fearful or restless as she was now. This time, the stakes were higher. The operation was more personal and had every nerve ending standing at attention. From the pit of her churning stomach to her tightened chest, she was on edge and anxious for the assault to begin.

A thought struck her turbulent mind and Kaitlyn held back a nervous laugh that was in danger of escaping.

Heaven help me!

It had not escaped Kaitlyn that instead of the heavily armed squad of agents, the myriad of communication networks and the digital eyes on ground and in the air that were standard in this type of raid, she was about to siege a heavily fortified estate with a small bunch of immigrants, one handgun and one Taser - only used once. She closed her eyes and sent out a silent prayer that her mother stay safe until she could get to her.

Kaitlyn flinched at the unexpected hoot from a nearby owl and her heart jumped in her chest as it began thumping against her ribcage. No sooner had she gotten her pulse under control, a rustling of leaves caught her attention and Kaitlyn's head swung in the direction of the noise. Her hand snapped to the gun on her hip and it was unholstered in a flash. When the form of Molly's wolf appeared in front of her a few moments later, she breathed a sigh of relief and her shoulders relaxed.

You have got to get a grip girl. This waiting will be the death of you.

"You scared the bejesus out of me," she whispered as she holstered her weapon.

Molly's wolf was close enough for her to see it cock its head. Kaitlyn was sure it was laughing at her. Ignoring the wolf's reaction, she straightened and braced herself. Her presence could only mean one thing ‑ the patrol had been eliminated and they were ready to attack. Murphy had given the word and they had all taken up their assigned positions.

With as much stealth as possible, Kaitlyn moved closer to the edge of the clearing, hugging the trees as she did. Molly's wolf beside her at every step. For the duration of the operation, they were to be glued at the hip.

Kaitlyn could make out the large house in the distance. With the exception of a dull light from one of the ground floor rooms, the area was pitch black. The only sounds were coming from deep within the forest behind her. The hushed cacophony from the choir of nocturnal birds and insects a reminder that even in the dead of night, life thrived and flourished.

The air vibrated as if it too felt the tension from the small band ready to strike. Kaitlyn crouched in order to remain concealed. The cold, wet grass beneath her fingers sent a chill up her arm and through her body. She shivered involuntarily; the temperature throughout the night had continued to drop and was turning crisp. Her exhales were floating away on a sea of mist and then evaporating into the ether as though it had never existed.

She knew that somewhere in the darkness, Tim and the others were making their way towards the roof. Only once the sentries were taken out would they be able to move in and charge the building. Confident that Molly's wolf would let her know when to advance, Kaitlyn rechecked her weapons. She rotated her head from side to side to get rid of the crick that had developed. The resulting cracks had the wolf sending her a soft growl.

"Sorry," Kaitlyn whispered as she raised her palms up in the air. "My bad."

Before Kaitlyn had a chance to put her hands down, the grey wolf was off.

"Shit," Kaitlyn scrambled up from her crouching position and rushed to catch up with the wolf.

Mindful to keep as low to the ground as possible Kaitlyn made her way across the open space between the forest line and the house. As yet, she still hadn't seen the others. That wasn't surprising considering her limited visibility. By the time her foot stepped onto the path that lead them to the front door, the sound of her own heartbeat was pounding in her eardrums building into a crescendo and blocking out any other sound. She was hesitant to breathe in case it gave their approach away, Kaitlyn was sure her raging pulse could be heard from inside the house.

As they reached the front, Kaitlyn and Molly's wolf sunk back into the bushes beside the large entrance to wait for the others arrival. What seemed a lifetime later, but could have only been mere seconds, three wolves descended on their position. Tim and Danny quickly followed. She knew Jose would be performing a final sweep to make sure they hadn't triggered any alarms.

Kaitlyn moved out of the darkness and prepared herself for the impending battle. A slither of moonlight had emerged from the clouds it had been veiled behind, and she was able to make out the determined expression of the Werewolves, be it in human form or otherwise.

She glanced across at her companions and her eyes rested on Murphy's wolf. Kaitlyn was surprised to discover he was looking directly at her. As with his human form, she found it difficult to know what he was thinking. The intense stare that seemed to bore into her soul was unsettling and comforting at the same time.

Unable to sustain that level of scrutiny without crumbling, she looked away and began to ready herself for what was about to happen. Kaitlyn reached into her pocket, pulled out her Taser and made sure it was ready.

Murphy had drilled into her that her gun be only used in extreme situations, and only if she were sure it was going to make a difference. She would ruin the element of surprise if her firearm discharged. There was no way of knowing how many were inside, and they would have no chance of victory if the enemy charged as one.

Kaitlyn knew what she needed to do and the high stakes if she got it wrong. One slip, one false move and she would have no hope of getting her mother out alive and they would have no hope of finally taking down the lunatic that had been given free reign for far too long. This is where the line would be drawn; Elijah would not be given a chance to cross it again.

She glanced across at her grandfather. Joshua's wolf was diligently scanning the area for any stragglers they may have missed. Satisfied that there were none, he swung back to face the entrance. Noticing her gaze, he lowered his head in acknowledgement and then positioned himself for the attack.

Kaitlyn watched Liam and Molly perform the same action and she felt a lump in her throat. Unlike her interaction with Joshua, she knew they were voicing their thoughts to make sure there was nothing left unsaid. They had all gone into this with their eyes opened. Not one of them knew if they would come out of this alive.

The moment Jose came around the side of the building they were ready. Kaitlyn squared her shoulders as Tim approached the front door without a sound. She kept her breathing steady as he reached out to turn the door handle. With the amount of coming and going from the estate and the amount of security, they were gambling on being able to walk in through an unlocked front door. Plan B wouldn't be so quiet.

The relief was almost visible when the door swung open and Tim moved to one side to let the others in. A moment later, they were in the belly of the beast, ready to take on whatever came their way. Each of them knew what they needed to do.

Kaitlyn, Danny and Joshua and Molly's wolves ascended the stairs. The others would make their way through the bottom floors where the majority of the security force would be housed.

Halfway up, one of the floorboards creaked and they froze in their tracks. Kaitlyn readied herself for the possibility they had been heard from those slumbering in their beds on the second floor. After thirty seconds of listening to the ticking of the grandfather clock at the top of the staircase, they continued the rest of the way. As soon as they reached the landing, they turned left, towards the side of the house they guessed her mother was being held.

Quickly making their way down the darkened hallway, they stopped at the second door. Danny put his head against it and listened. He pulled away, held up one finger and nodded twice.

A flutter of excitement rushed through Kaitlyn. This meant that he only detected one person in the room, and from the scent, the person was human. It could only mean one thing. This was where they were holding her mother prisoner.

Kaitlyn took a step forward and, noticing the key, deftly turned it to unlock the door. As she opened it, Joshua and Danny rushed down the corridor toward one of the other occupied rooms.

A moment later both Kaitlyn and Molly's wolf were through the door. She raced across the room towards the bed while the wolf stayed near the exit as a lookout. At a disadvantage in the darkened room, she grabbed her cell phone and used the dull light from it to guide her way. As she got closer, she could make out an arm handcuffed to the bed. The prisoner was asleep, a blanket covered the body.

Reaching the bed, Kaitlyn pulled the cover away to reveal the darkened features of a woman. She moved her phone closer to the prisoner. Kaitlyn's heart stopped the moment her mother's sleeping face was exposed. From the video of her abduction, Kaitlyn had expected a few bruises. Nothing had prepared her for the sight that now met her. She moved the phone lower down her mother's neck, chest and stomach, lifting the bloodied shirt to inspect the injuries.

Tears welled and pricked at her eyes. Someone had attempted to patch up her mother, but there was only one person that could have inflicted this type of damage. Madeline had been used as a cutting board. Her face was a web of cuts and lacerations. Each one shallow enough to not be dangerous, but deep enough to cause the maximum amount of pain and damage. From the bandages across the rest of her, the remainder of her body had not fared so well. Blood had seeped through the gauze, and some them appeared soaked.

Rage welled within her, every muscle contracted. The need to lash out was primal. How could that animal have done this to her mother? The physical reaction to Madeline's injuries was making it hard for Kaitlyn to focus and stay on point. She wanted revenge. The bastard had taken her father and there was no doubt in her mind, he had almost taken her mother as well.

Kaitlyn was reminded of their mission when Molly's wolf nudged against her leg. She had been so focused on her mother's condition she had failed to realise their element of surprise was no longer a surprise. Shouting combined with growls, the splintering of wood and glass echoed throughout the house. A battle was waging both upstairs and down.

"Mom, mom you need to wake up!" Kaitlyn hissed as she rocked Madeline from side to side.

Madeline, groggy from the loss of blood slowly came too. Kaitlyn, seeing she was about to scream in fear quickly placed her hand over her mother's mouth.

"Mom it's me. We're getting you out of here."

Kaitlyn withdrew her hand when recognition dawned in her mother's eyes. She looked around for something she could use to unlock the cuffs.

"Did they leave the keys anywhere in the room?" she asked frantically rifling through the bedside draws.

Madeline shook her head as if to physically wake herself. "I..I don fink sho," she slurred as she swung her legs over the side of the bed. Madeline reached out with her free hand to stabilise herself when her body almost toppled off the bed. "I can fink straight," she slurred in panic.

Kaitlyn stopped short when she opened the second draw down to discover small medicine vials. Recognising the label, she pulled one out. "Mom," she said holding one of the bottles in front of Madeline. "Did they give you this?"

From the way Madeline visibly strained to read the label, Kaitlyn guessed her mother had been given a high dosage of the sedatives to be as groggy and unresponsive as she was.

Molly's wolf let out a small whimper. Kaitlyn knew this was a warning that they needed to hurry and all hell was breaking loose outside.

Madeline pointed towards Molly's pacing frame. "Hey wook, whats dog doin here?"

"She's helping us escape," said Kaitlyn as she pulled on the handcuff attached to the headboard to test its strength. She frowned, the key was nowhere to be found ‑ there had to be another way to free her mother.

Kaitlyn stood and began to investigate the room. "Molly I need to find something strong to pry a post from the headboard. Can you see anything?"

A moment later, she heard a small yelp. She quickly made her way to where Molly was scratching. "It just might work," Kaitlyn said as she unplugged the floor lamp. She removed the shade and bulb, and dragged it across to the bed.

"Mom, I need you to get on the ground as far away from the bed as you can get," she instructed as she put the base of the lamp between the wooden slats.

Madeline struggled to get to the floor with one hand still attached to the bed. She winced when her chest fell against the bed. "S'okay. Go for it," she said holding up a shaky thumb.

Kaitlyn began to pull on the lamp pole. She stopped the moment her mother poked her head over the mattress.

"Boo!" Madeline giggled.

Just how much of that stuff did they inject you with?

"Molly, can you please make sure she stays in place. She's drugged up to the eyeballs and I don't want her raising her head at the wrong moment."

Molly quickly complied. Kaitlyn rolled her eyes when she heard her mother whisper, "Nice doggy."

Kaitlyn began to apply pressure. At first, the slat refused to budge. She doubled her effort when the noise from outside in the hallway became louder. The sound of wood cracking as it gave way to the force of the metal object against it was music to her ears. She lurched backward as the wood gave way and broke in two.

Molly jumped up from her half sitting position on her mother and headed for the door. Her agitated state let Kaitlyn know things were heating up outside.

"Let's get you out of here," Kaitlyn said as she helped Madeline off the floor and unhooked the handcuff from the broken bedhead.

Madeline, still groggy, needed to be half carried across the room. A small growl from Molly warned Kaitlyn of the danger about to descend. However, not in enough time to do anything about it.

The bedroom door swung open with enough force to embed the doorknob in the wall as it made contact. Light from the corridor streamed through the room and two men rushed in, ready for attack.

In a heartbeat, Molly's wolf had pounced on the first man through the entrance. A feral growl ripped from her as she flew at him, teeth bared, ready for attack. Not prepared for the assault, the man flew back against the wall with the force from the wolf's collision.

Molly's wolf, taking advantage of the situation, snapped her jaws around the man's neck. Before she could bear down and finish him, the second man now recovered from his initial surprise entered the fray. He was attempting to pull the wolf off his companion shouting obscenities the entire time. Molly, not expecting the attack from behind, had lost her grip on the first man's neck. From the quick manner in which he had recovered his initial inertia, and the strength to hold the wolf's head away from his neck, Kaitlyn had to assume both men were Werewolves.

Molly snarled and broke free of the first man's grip, her powerful claws swiped against his chest as she shook her body to dislodge the second man from her back. Blood began to seep from where her talons had cut. In any normal situation, this would have the victim screaming in pain, if not already unconscious. This, however, was far from normal. The bloodied man growled and pulled on the wolf's mane as if to twist it to the ground. Kaitlyn tensed when she saw a volley of punches thrown at Molly's wolf's ribcage. The resulting whimper had Kaitlyn spurring into action.

Kaitlyn leant her mother against the nearest wall. "Mom stay here and don't move."

"Okay hon, you go help the nice doggy," her mother slurred as she held onto the wall for dear life.

Kaitlyn glanced around the room. With the added light, she was able to assess possible weapons. The three entangled bodies were too close for her to fire her gun. Their movements were too fast and she might inadvertently shoot Molly, who, unable to dislodge the second assailant, was now fending off the attacks from the front and rear.

Kaitlyn dashed across the room and seized the heavy lamp stand that had helped free her mother. She lifted the base over her head and then charged towards the man on Molly's back. With as much force as she could summon, Kaitlyn smashed the heavy base onto the man's skull.

The impact was enough to knock the man from off the wolf's back and rolling on the floor in pain. Kaitlyn felt a small amount of satisfaction at his discomfort.

The removal of the man was enough of a distraction to allow Molly's wolf to refocus on the first Werewolf. A ferocious roar was emitted before it charged, going straight for the jugular.

Kaitlyn, distracted by the scene by the door, had not paid attention to the other Werewolf, who had now recovered from her attack with the lamp. It wasn't until the last moment she noticed him flying towards her. She was clamped in his iron grip an instant later.

"I'll make you pay for that," he spat as she struggled to break free.

Kaitlyn laboured to breathe; it was as though her ribs were imploding. Her vision began to blur and her lungs felt as though it were on fire.

Adamant that it was not her day to die, the sound of Murphy's voice echoed through her mind. His insistent and pedantic training pushed to the forefront, demanding she fight back. Kaitlyn reached up, her limited ability to move making her task that much harder. From his position behind her, the man's arms crossed over her ribcage and he pulled tighter and tighter. She could feel his breath on her ear. Reaching for the area Murphy had shown her, Kaitlyn's hands locked around his arm, just below the elbow. She closed her eyes and her fingers sought out the pressure spot she was after. Praying she had found the right place, she squeezed with all that she was worth. Air rushed back into her lungs as his grip loosened. Taking advantage of the situation, Kaitlyn put the remainder of her training into practice. Two precision strikes later, the man was on the ground. This time, it was the Werewolf who was unable to breathe.

From out of nowhere, a pair of powerful jaws latched around the man's neck. A moment later Kaitlyn could hear a crack of bones as Molly's wolf tore flesh, cartilage and trachea from his body and spat the contents on the floor. Blood gushed from the severed artery and sprayed everything in its wake. The metallic smell of blood now filled the small room.

Kaitlyn glanced towards the door. The first man was laying on the ground in a similar condition to the one now dying at her feet. She turned back to Molly's wolf who was wiping her bloodied muzzle against the bed linen. "Remind me never to get on your bad side," she remarked as she made her way back to her mother, who by now, was bug-eyed at what she had been a witness to.

"Okay mom," Kaitlyn said as she helped her mother from the wall, "let's get you out of here."

As they emerged from the room, signs of a struggle was evident the length of the hallway. The few side tables that littered the corridor were now broken or toppled, their contents strewn across the plush carpet. The large, expensive mirror near the stairwell end was shattered. She could make out blood in the shards of glass remaining in the frame. A body lay limp, face down half out of one of the doorways. Blood was soaking into the light coloured carpet around the man's head.

Distant shouts, screams and growls indicated that whatever had started upstairs had moved somewhere on the floor below. Kaitlyn continued to half carry, half drag her mother towards the staircase. Molly, leading the way, was already half way to the ground floor. The sound of a scuffle from the second corridor caught her attention and she swung her head around in time to see Danny's body flung against a wall. His face was bloodied and a large gash in his arm was indication enough that the fight wasn't going well. From the way in which he cradled his arm, she guessed it was dislocated.

Before Danny could rise, two snarling grey wolves descended on him, quickly followed by a third.

Kaitlyn groaned. She was torn between getting her mother out of the house and evening the odds in the fight. Werewolves in their wolf form were much stronger than in their human form. Even taking into account Danny's experience, three in wolf form against his human one was a bit of a stretch.

A thought struck her and she tensed. Where was Joshua? Danny and her grandfather were supposed to be working as a team. Kaitlyn eased Madeline on the top stair. "Mom hold on to the banister until I get back okay?"

She hastened towards the very uneven battle and grimaced. With only one arm to fight with Danny was losing the battle.

Pulling her gun from its holster, she halted a short distance from the Werewolves. With more courage than she felt, Kaitlyn called out, "Hey mutts, three against one is a bit unfair isn't it?"

The Werewolf nearest to her swung his mangy head around. He let out a snarl as he ceased his offensive on Danny and turned to face her. The wolf lowered his head to the ground and hunched his shoulders, a sign he was readying to attack.

Kaitlyn squared her shoulders and held her ground meeting the wolf's stare. What she was about to do was stupid and reckless. She would only get one chance. If she lost, it wasn't only her life at risk; her mother would fall soon after.

The creature pounced, his massive paws reached out towards her. The sharp deathly talons readying to cut into her flesh like butter.

At the same instant, Kaitlyn raised her weapon, took aim and fired. She discharged a second bullet close behind the first. The ear-piercing crack was enough to attract the attention of the other two wolves. They turned in time to see the body of their companion fall, dead before he hit the ground.

Katlyn began to breathe. Her aim had been true, and both bullets had gone through the wolf's eye socket into its brain, exploding on impact. Had the bullet hit anywhere else, it would not have stopped the Werewolf. A fraction up or down and she would now look as though she ran through a food blender.

She heard a growl from behind her and ducked in time to see Molly's wolf leap over her and onto one of the wolves. Not expecting the attack, the wolf's defences were down and Molly had ripped out his throat before anyone knew what was happening.

The third wolf, now not as sure as it once was, began to back away. Molly's wolf followed and it too was given a quick death.

"Where's Joshua?" Kaitlyn demanded as she rushed to Danny the moment she knew the immediate danger had passed.

"Downstairs," he replied nursing his useless arm, "I was sent back up to see if you needed help. Those three ambushed me."

Satisfied that nothing had happened to her grandfather, she attempted to help Danny up. "Can you stand?"

"I'll be fine as soon as my shoulder is relocated back into the socket," he winced, "I need you to put it back into place. I need to change, but I can't in this condition."

"You do realise I've not done this before?" Kaitlyn cautioned as Danny lay on his back.

"I have, so don't worry about it," he reassured her. "You need to move my arm at a ninety-degree angle."

If she thought the sound of Molly's wolf breaking their first attackers neck was chilling. It was nothing compared to the sound of a shoulder popping back into its socket. Once Danny was up and ready to change into his wolf form, Kaitlyn and Molly headed back towards the staircase to retrieve her mother who somehow had fallen asleep.

Kaitlyn gently shook her mother. They needed to get Madeline out of here before they encountered any more mafia Werewolves.

As she pulled Madeline up from the stairs, she glanced at the grandfather clock which had managed to escape the same fate as the other furniture. Her eyes widened in shock.

Ten minutes!

How had what felt like hours, pass by in only minutes?

As they descended the stairs, Kaitlyn took stock of the bodies that littered the floor of the foyer. She was thankful when she failed to recognise any of the corpses.

"I'm sooo tired," Madeline complained as they reached the bottom. "Shleep. Need shleep."

"Mom you need to stay awake," Kaitlyn coaxed.

Madeline scrunched her nose and pouted, her eyebrows shot up and Kaitlyn could see her mother was attempting to focus her vision through half-open eyes. "How come they're 'loud to shleep?" she questioned, pointing at a body they had just weaved around.

Kaitlyn pushed Madeline through the front door. "Because their dead mom."

"Dead, vey don look dead," slurred Madeline craning her neck to see back inside.

Kaitlyn continued to half carry her mother across the open area into the tree line with Molly leading the way. Once she was sure they were hidden from view, she set her mother down on the ground and propped her against a thick tree trunk.

She stood up and gazed down at Madeline, who had dozed the moment her body hit the ground. The panic that had begun to surface earlier was back. They had gotten her mother out of the house, but there was no way she was going to make it through the forest under her own steam, and Kaitlyn wouldn't be able to carry her the distance.

Kaitlyn inhaled and held her breath. Her mother needed medical help before the sedative wore off. There was only one solution.

"Molly I need you to change back into your human form and get my mom to a hospital."

Molly's wolf took a step back and let out a low growl of displeasure.

Kaitlyn held up her hands, "I know that wasn't the plan," she began, "but you're the only one who can carry her that distance. I'm not sure how much longer the drugs will last. Once it wears off, she's going to be in agony."

Kaitlyn crouched down beside Madeline and gently touched her mother's damaged face with the palm of her hand. "You're my only hope of getting her to safety," she pleaded.

At first, Kaitlyn thought her appeal had fallen on deaf ears. A gruff snort from the animal attracted her attention and she turned to discover the wolf was giving control back to her human side. Its body began to ripple as though something was moving under its skin. She watched as the wolf's body began to lurch uncontrollably as hair receded, replaced by skin. The wolf's forepaws morphed into Molly's human hands and the wolf's hind paws turned into feet. Once it was over, Murphy's mother got up from her kneeling position and stood over her.

Kaitlyn rasied her self up and then whispered, "Thank you," as she reached over to hug the other woman.

Molly bent down and picked Madeline up with ease. "I suppose you'll be going back in then," she said nodding her head in the direction of the now brightly lit house.

Kaitlyn nodded. "I've left them an immigrant down, it's the least I can do. I couldn't live with myself if I didn't try to help."

Through the dark, Kaitlyn could feel Molly's eyes burning into her. "Keep safe, and don't take any risks. You have miles to go before you sleep." With that, Molly turned and began to make her way in the direction they had originally come.

Molly stopped before she got too far and turned back to Kaitlyn. "What do I tell her if she wakes up and wants to know why she's been carried by a naked woman?"

Kaitlyn let out a laugh. "Just tell her you're her guardian angel, and to go back to sleep."

Once Molly and her mother had disappeared into the thick trees, she sprinted towards the house. Her thoughts now focused on Murphy and the others. In the short time since she had left the house, anything could have happened. Kaitlyn felt nauseous at the prospect of what she might be walking into. She knew there was no future for them, but she didn't want to contemplate the possibility of living in a world in which Murphy wasn't part of.
