------------
Tap tap.
The sound of my footsteps filled the bedroom. Despite it being large, the sounds echoed from how quiet it was.
My nails were chipped from biting them while I was walking back and forth nervously.
I didn't know how I got to my room without seeing Mori-san. I am relieved I didn't because I am not sure yet if I am ready to do so. Now that I was in his place, I felt unsafe after knowing he is connected to the Mafia. Mafia of all organizations.
The sound of my phone ringing startled me because I was lost in my thoughts. After it got my attention, I hurried to pick up.
However, before picking up, I looked at the screen to see who was calling me. Knowing it was my teacher, my uneasiness calmed down a bit.
I sighed before I spoke, "Sensei...it is you," I said with a soft smile.
"Fumiko, I am glad you picked up."
It's been a while since I've heard my teacher's voice, it made me tear up a little. I immediately wiped my eyes to stop the tears. I didn't want to cry over the phone anyway.
"And I am happy you called. It has been a while."
"I know...I am sorry, Fumiko. I've been busy lately," I could hear his sad sigh.
"You too?"
"Hm?"
"Uh, nothing. Please don't overwork yourself. Is everything going well with you?"
"More than okay, so don't worry."
I couldn't see his face, but I could imagine his rare soft smile while saying this which made me smile too.
"I am happy to hear that."
"Listen, Fumiko, since today I am not very busy, I was thinking if we can meet up somewhere. Choose wherever you want."
Hearing that made me smile wider, "really?? I can see you?" I thought of a good place before answering. "Well, there's a park I would like to go to with you."
"Deal, just give me the location and I will see you there. Meet me there at 5 PM."
"Understood." I replied and gave him the location. "I will see you soon then, Sensei," I smiled again as I was going to hang up, but he interrupted by speaking again.
"One more thing..you do not have to tell Mori-sensei about our meeting. You can keep it a secret."
"Huh, why?" I raised my eyebrows.
"We.. had a fight. But do not worry too much. It's not that big of a deal, we always argue with each other."
"....." I kept quiet. I didn't know what to say.
"I said don't worry, Fumiko. I have to hang up now. Take care."
I heard the beeping sound, signaling that he hung up the phone.
I sighed deeply and held my phone tightly against my chest while narrowing my eyebrows after ending the call. I could feel my heart beating fast. I wasn't sure yet if I will tell my teacher the truth about his dear friend. Not before I ask him why they are fighting.
Because first, I didn't want to worry him. And second, I need to make sure what Osamu Dazai said was true. What if it was all a lie and he was messing with me? I am not 100% sure yet, and I didn't want to mess things up.
I didn't want to be late and waste my teacher's time waiting, so I arrived in time. I saw him already there in the park standing alone beside a bench where he could enjoy the fresh breeze. He didn't change at all, instead his silver hair was longer. He was still wearing his yukata, though.
"Sensei!" I called him while waving and running up to him with a bright smile on my face. I couldn't run fast because I was wearing a long dress and heels.
I saw him turning around then smiling lightly at me. He might not express his emotion through a wide smile, but I could see how happy he was to see me by looking at his eyes.
I opened my arms widely and then hugged him so tightly I didn't want to let go at all. That warmth, that scent, that feeling of being safe in my teacher's arms. I missed it all...I missed him.
After breaking the hug, he grabbed my shoulders and looked at my face, "you've grown. Your look might have changed but you are still the little Fumiko that I've always known. I am so glad you look well.." His grip on my shoulders was a bit tight.
I smiled, "you look in good health as well. You haven't changed too in my eyes. You are still serious and strict, but also the kind teacher that I've known for years," I chuckled.
He huffed smilingly then let me sit on the bench beside him. I saw him picking up a bag from the grass underneath us. He took out some snacks from the bag then took out two cups from a box. Knowing he brought all that to the park made me chuckle.
"If you told me we are having a picnic, I could have bought food and drinks with me too," I giggled.
"No, there's no need to. I know you have liked snacks since you were little, so I've brought some with me. And here's some green tea, it's good for you," he gave me a cup of tea to drink.
"Thank you, Sensei," I took the cup while smiling. I smelled the aroma that was coming from the tea before taking a sip. "Mm, it's so good! Did you make this?" I looked at him and asked after tasting it.
"Yes."
"I can tell. You make the best tea," I chuckled again before taking another sip. I was chuckling too much because of how happy I was with my teacher.
I opened a bag of one of the snacks and shared it with him. Enjoying drinking tea, and eating snacks with my teacher while watching the view of the mountains was like heaven. That's all I want to do. I would be sad when I go back. I didn't want our outing to be over. But everything has an end, right?
"The view is so beautiful and calming. I should have brought my book with me to write. This is a perfect spot to get creative and write," I sighed.
"You are still writing?" My teacher looked at me and asked.
"Of course, I would never stop writing."
"I see," he smiled lightly with his eyes closed and patted me on the head.
I looked down with a serious expression on my face. The calming atmosphere was going to get intense.
"Sensei, what is the cause of your fight with Mori-san?" I asked.
"...." He got quiet for a moment. His metallic blue eyes were looking sharp as usual. He looked away and replied, "we are arguing as usual. Nothing..new. It's stuff you wouldn't understand."
There's no way my teacher would hide something from me. He would never. He doesn't want to worry me just like how I am doing. That's what I hoped.
"I think you already know Mori-sensei can be pretty stubborn sometimes...Probably all the time, not sometimes," he sighed. "And I can't stand his stubbornness," he said with a frown.
I didn't know what to reply. I just sighed, and reached my hand to the bag of snacks to take a piece of candy, but my hand grabbed the air instead.
I looked beside me and there was nothing.
"Eh??"
"Mm, this candy is tasty!"
I turned around a bit after hearing a male voice. I saw a boy with a fair complexion and short, messy black hair right behind the bench my teacher and I were sitting on. His eyes were closed, so I couldn't see what his eyes looked like. However, he was wearing a hat, and it reminded me of those hats the detectives wear. He wasn't that much taller than me and judging from his attitude, I don't think he was that older than me.
"Y-You stole my candy..." My jaw dropped and my eyes were wide open.
How did I not notice him? Where did he come from, anyway??
"Stealing something from someone is disrespectful, Ranpo. Give it back to her. She can share her snacks with you," I heard my teacher speaking.
So, I learned that the boy's name was Ranpo.
I saw him pouting with his eyes still closed while holding the bag of candy close to his chest, "all the candies in this world belong only to the best detective on this earth."
"....."
I looked at the boy quietly. Is he for real? Was he being serious?
But, something caught my attention. He was a detective?! If yes, I would get along with that person for sure. I always wanted to meet a detective.
"Are you...really a detective or are you joking?" I asked.
The hat he was wearing gave me an answer, but it wasn't a clear one. I wanted to make sure first.
He gasped and frowned, "how can you not know me, Ranpo Edogawa, the greatest detective in the world!"
"I-I am sorry, I didn't mean to offend you..!" I shook my hands quickly while looking at him apologetically.
Suddenly, I felt someone pulling my arm at my right side. I immediately looked to the side and saw a female this time scanning my body from up to down for some odd reason. She looked older than me, judging from her appearance. That young lady is so beautiful. She has straight, dark purple hair cut into a bob that reaches past her chin and bangs. She has magenta eyes which look pretty to see. But, they were sharp-looking and could make one shiver. She has a scary aura...I could see she was a strong woman.
But most importantly now, where are these people coming from?? Were they hiding behind a tree and listening to my conversation with my teacher this whole time or something?
"So, this is the girl you've told us about," the girl spoke. I think she was talking to my teacher. "You look fine. There's no injury, unfortunately," she said with a tch before she was done scanning me.
"Unfortunately?" I raised an eyebrow after rubbing my arm since her grip was tight on it.
"What are you two doing here? I am not done talking to Fumiko. Didn't I tell you to wait for me in the car?" My teacher spoke next. He looked kinda annoyed by getting interrupted.
"We came to say hi to your special student, is that wrong?" The dark purple-haired girl said while her hands were on her hips.
"Yeah, we got bored. But I mainly came here for the candy. I knew you were eating some without me," the black-haired boy with the hat said while he was chewing the candy.
"Uh..." I looked at them and pointed at Ranpo then at the girl. "Ranpo Edogawa and--"
"Akiko Yosano," the girl introduced herself.
"Woah," I was surprised because I wasn't aware my teacher had known cool-looking people. "Are you two perhaps his students too?" I asked with a smile.
"You can say that," my teacher answered my question while closing his eyes. Then he opened them and looked at the two. "I want a minute to talk to Fumiko in private. I will be back, so wait for me."
"Alright then. You don't mind if I take the candies, right? Right," the detective Ranpo grinned as he carried all the candies, taking them with him.
I laughed lightly, "if you love candy that much then you can take them," I smiled. I let him take them because he looked happy and I couldn't say no.
"Yayy!" I saw him walking away happily like a child. I am very curious what his age is.
Suddenly, he stopped walking to look at me. His emerald green eyes looked directly into my ruby red ones. That surprised me.
"Don't ever plan on doing something alone."
He only said that to me then continued to walk away.
I blinked. What was that about? It's like he can read me like a book, which makes sense because he's a detective.
"Oh, well," the young woman shrugged while rubbing the back of her neck. I saw her looking directly at me. Her expression was serious too, "if anything happens to you, don't ever hesitate to let Fukuzawa-sensei know. You might not be his student anymore, but you are always important to him," she said before walking away.
"Okay.." I replied. That was weird.
"Thank you, Yosano," my teacher said before she left, then looked at me after we were alone.
I expected him to say something, but instead, he grabbed my shoulders and pulled me in a hug.
I blinked, then wrapped my arms around him, hugging back, "Sensei, you seem sad..."
"Yes..indeed I am. I am afraid one day we can't see each other anymore."
He sounded in pain. I can even notice he was trying to hold back his tears because his voice was shaking a bit. I've never seen him like this before. He usually doesn't tell me how he feels and he rarely shows emotions. Hearing him say that made my heart beat fast in fear.
"Please do not say that.." I said sadly and softly while burying my face on his shoulder.
"...."
Seeing him not saying anything, I pulled away, breaking the hug to look at him. This time, I put my hands on his shoulders and looked at him seriously, "don't worry, Sensei. I am strong now. Thanks to you, I will be fine. See? It's been four years since I've left and I am still safe and sound. We will still meet up with each other like how we did today. Nothing can separate us, except death."
"....."
My teacher remained silent, but there was a surprised expression on his face. Then that surprised look was replaced with his usual stern one. "Yes, you've become strong and I am proud of you. Stay safe until I see you again. Promise me, you will take care of yourself. And as Yosano said, if anything happens to you, call me immediately."
"I will. I promise," I nodded with a big and bright smile before hugging him again.
I bid him farewell. I should be strong for my teacher, I have to do what I promised him to do. I am going to see Mori-san without hesitation and fear.
However, I couldn't help but feel my heart pounding after receiving a message from an unknown number. They sent a random location and clearly whoever that was, they needed me to go there. At first, I didn't know if it was sent to the wrong person or it was a trap or a prank, but I decided to go to the location because something seemed suspicious.
Once I arrived at the location, I was beyond shocked. A very huge building was in front of my eyes. It was located not too far away from Yokohama city. Outside the building, there were many bodyguards with very expensive-looking cars.
As I stepped closer to the gate, a bodyguard suddenly took my arm and dragged me with him inside the building without saying anything. Did they know me? Were they waiting for me? I tried to pull my arm away from his tight grip, but I failed. I didn't know what was going on and where they were taking me, so I was very nervous.
"H-Hey! Where are you taking me!?" I asked with a frown. My voice was loud.
The bodyguard kept quiet and continued to drag me to who knows where.
I tried to stay calm, and be brave then decided to just follow.
I saw myself standing in front of a large door. Even the doors looked fancy and expensive. Everything in that building looked fancy. It was like I was in a huge castle.
After it was opened, my eyes got focused. It was a very large room. No, it was an office, but it didn't look like one to me because of how elegant the furniture and decorations were. The bodyguard pushed me slightly as a sign to enter. I glared at the bodyguard before walking inside. I looked around in awe. I admit it looked magnificent. I've never been to a room like that before in my life. I looked to the side, whole Yokohama can be viewed through the glass.
The view was so delightful I got distracted until I heard a familiar voice.
"Welcome to my new office, Fumiko-chan. It's a nice surprise, isn't it?"
I looked away from the glass and saw Mori-san himself sitting at a desk with a wide smirk on his face. Beside him was the boy I've encountered before, Osamu Dazai. He was standing with a blank face that showed no emotion.
Mori-san was dressed differently. He looked so much different that I thought I was seeing the wrong person for a second. He wasn't wearing his casual clothes with a white coat. Instead, he was wearing much fancier clothes. They looked expensive too. His hair was tied up in a small ponytail and his face was shaved. And with that dark wide grin on his face instead of his kind smile that I used to see every minute, he was a different man.
"What's the meaning of this, Ōgai Mori?" I asked, calling him by his full name with a frown on my face.
"Haha," he laughed as if I told him a joke. "That's it? Aren't you going to congratulate me? That's not very nice, Fumiko."
I walked close and slammed his desk with my two hands while frowning, "congratulate you on what? For being the new boss of an illegal organization!?"
This was the first time I raised my voice at him, even being angry with him. I looked at the boy beside him, "and he's working with you, huh."
"Ah, I apologize for not introducing Dazai-kun to you. I was going to keep it a surprise. Too bad, you've met him before," Mori smiled as if nothing was wrong and that made me even more irritated.
I clenched my fist and kept yelling, "stop it! Why!? Why did you lie to me and hid the truth from me? A Mafia boss!? This isn't what I expected from you!"
He chuckled before getting up to walk up to me, "I told you I wanted to keep it a surprise and your reaction disappointed me, Just like your teacher. You both disappointed me so much," he frowned. I've never seen him make a terrifying expression that made me shiver.
Once he lifted his hand and lightly touched my chin, I immediately stepped away from him because I was scared. I was scared of him.
"No..Don't touch me. Don't get close to me," I shook my head as he laughed again.
Gosh, his laugh made my blood boil from anger. Was he not taking me seriously? Was he thinking that was all a joke to him?
I clenched my fist even tighter while glaring at him, "Mori..I shouldn't have gone with you. I shouldn't have even listened to you. All that kindness and respect. Your gifts, your compliments..your smile..they were all a lie! If only...if only I can go back to the past and fix everything!" I yelled.
I felt something coming out of me and surrounding me. That was it again, that's what happened when I first encountered Dazai, I remember it all. I closed my eyes, feeling a powerful energy coming out of me. But then, that energy disappeared after I felt a hand on my shoulder.
"Huh?" I turned my head to see Dazai right behind me. I looked at him in confusion.
He shook his head, "nope, you can't go back to the past. Not under my touch," I saw that same dark smirk of his while saying this.
"What..?"
"You see Fumiko, Dazai-kun is Gifted as well. His ability allows him to nullify any ability with a single touch," Mori explained while getting close to me. I saw him grinning widely, "that means you are Gifted too. Your ability, time manipulation, is a very powerful and unique ability. You will be very useful to Port Mafia indeed," he lifted his hand again and stroked my cheek while looking me in the eyes. His expression was terrifyingly dark.
I widened my eyes in fear while looking back at him. I froze in my place, "what are you talking about, how did you know about my ability? Even I myself didn't know about it. And, who said I am going to join the Mafia!?"
He let go of my cheek and stepped back, "so, you refuse?"
"Yes, I refuse," I replied.
"Well then, you will have to defeat me first," he said while smirking, then took out a scalpel from his pocket, and pulled it dangerously close to my face.
My face went completely pale after seeing the scalpel close to me.
"I know you don't like surgery supplies. You tremble every time you see them, just like right now," he said with a smile. I knew he was only playing with me. Without noticing myself, I slapped him hard on the cheek. His eyes were wide open as he looked surprised. I was surprised. I saw his cheek turning red, meaning my slap was hard enough it left a mark on him.
I saw Dazai calmly shaking his head with a tsk after seeing his boss getting slapped in front of him. "You've made a big mistake, Enchi-san," I heard the young Mafioso saying before I looked at Mori who was laughing with a wide and dark smirk on his face. His eyes were closed.
"I never thought you could be so bold, Fumiko. I am very disappointed in you," he said calmly, but then I saw him opening his purple eyes. They were dark, no light showed in them. They looked completely different from the usual eyes I used to see whenever they looked at me. I saw him then quickly lifting his hand that was holding the scalpel.
Before I could react to what was happening, I felt a sharp pain in my right eye. Then, the color red like blood covered my vision.
I stepped back and stumbled as I couldn't balance myself. I felt a warm liquid scrolling down my right cheek. Those weren't tears.
"Ahhhhh!"
I screamed in agony while covering my right eye with my hands as I was going to fall down, but I felt strong arms catching me from behind despite the strong pain I was feeling in my whole body.
All I could see from my left eye was the blood in my hands. I couldn't see Mori very clearly as he was standing away from me. I think the person who caught me was Dazai, even though I couldn't see him. I haven't heard anything from him. I think he was as puzzled as I was.
My body felt numb, my head felt dizzy and my vision in both my eyes was blurry..
Even though I was in pain, I felt as if I was floating in cold water. I couldn't move anymore. My consciousness was leaving me.
I might not wake up again...
