Round 1 Entry

Hello! :D
This is my entry for Round 1 of  bumblvee's writing contest. Hope you enjoy!
Edit: Oops missed the deadline with my West Coast time :P Umm this won't be judged but you can still read it ig, I haven't posted anything in a while
Prompt: Pumpkins are all sorts of shapes and sizes, everyone knows not a single pair is alike. But this one... this one is so different... and it's perfect.

Pumpkins are all sorts of shapes and sizes, everyone knows not a single pair is alike. But this one... this one is so different... and it's perfect.

This one was blue. A soft baby blue, a shade that looked like somebody had blended the atmosphere- clouds and all. Even though the stem was curled like a pig's tail and the shape resembled the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Eva knew it would be an excellent decoration. She was glad that she had decided to dig through the assortment of bright orange gourds at the top of the pile.

After hoisting the surprisingly heavy pumpkin into her shopping cart, Eva made her way over to the checkout, where she stood waiting behind a young girl and her mother. The line was rather long, so she took out her phone and started playing Tetris.

What?

At least it wasn't Candy Crush.

When the speed of the blocks became too much for Eva to handle, she rage-quit with a score of 113,004 and her mind began to wander. Of course, she began to think about blue pumpkins. What caused them to be blue? Blue is such a rare color in nature! How had nobody else snatched this unique pumpkin in particular before she did? Eva googled "naturally blue pumpkins" and found out there were multiple variants that qualified.

She was snapped out of her intensive investigation when a high-pitched scream cut through the air. Eva jumped reflexively and made a 360-degree scan of the area in case there were any murderers barreling down the aisles.

Instead, she saw the little girl in front of her in tears, pointing underneath the wall of the checkout aisle (A/N: I have no idea what those things are called) with a shaky finger. Eva bent over, squinting to see what was under there, only to be greeted by a pair of glowing yellow eyes. She shrieked like she was two instead of fifteen and stumbled back, almost losing her balance if not for her weighed-down shopping cart. She pretended not to see the people behind her staring as if she had shape-shifted into Megamind.

A few seconds later, a black cat crawled out from under the checkout aisle wall and swiftly leaped into Eva's shopping cart. She jumped again, startled, while the cat nonchalantly started grooming themself and gave Eva the Seriously? look. The little girl rubbed her now bloodshot eyes and tilted her head like a confused ostrich, while Eva quickly glanced behind to see if anyone else had noticed the cat.

Everyone was scrolling on their phones with jaded looks on their face.

Ooohhhkay, guess that's a no, she thought.

Then, things got really weird.

When Eva looked at the cat again, their eerie yellow eyes fixed her in place. They tapped their little black paw on the stem of the blue pumpkin and promptly vanished into the ether.

It would've been cute if it hadn't been so unsettling.

"Excuse me, child?" an annoyed voice asked.

Eva swiveled around to face a middle-aged woman with atrociously styled blond hair. She hadn't been behind her before and was clutching a shopping cart filled to the brim with bizarre objects.

"What?" Eva said, confused. She didn't think she was blocking the line or anything rude.

"That pumpkin," the lady said. "Give me that pumpkin."

"I'm sorry, what?" Eva repeated.

The lady rolled her eyes impatiently. "That blue pumpkin. Give. It."

People were starting to stare. Most of them threw disgruntled looks at the woman, who had probably pushed her way through the line. The young cashier looked around nervously, as if not sure what to do.

"Why?" Eva asked. "You don't work here, right?" Maybe the pumpkin wasn't supposed to be for sale or something.

The lady gave Eva a death stare. "As if I would work in this awful place! My family Thanksgiving dinner is very soon, and I require that pumpkin to make the most outstanding pumpkin pie."

"Thanksgiving is in in a month..." Eva replied hesitantly. "And I got this pumpkin first. And the color wouldn't affect the taste?"

The woman sniffed. "Children these days..." Then, she reached over to grab the pumpkin and had her hands on it surprisingly quickly. However, before Eva could do anything, the woman lifted it up.

Well, she tried to.

Instead, the blue pumpkin stayed firmly in place. The lady (whom Eva had dubbed "Karen", appropriately) grunted and struggled, wobbling the shopping cart a few times. Eva would've been shocked if she hadn't seen a magic black cat a few minutes earlier. Instead, she somehow grabbed the pumpkin and hauled it onto the conveyor belt, dropping a sleeve of strawberry HI-CHEW right after. Who cares if it was Halloween? Most houses never had HI-CHEW. The cashier stifled a giggle after Karen had collapsed on the floor in exhaustion and scanned Eva's items like nothing had happened.

Eva smirked, reloaded her shopping cart, and walked into the parking lot where her friend would be waiting in her car with two Hong Kong milk teas. She had zero idea what in the world had just happened, but it would certainly make an interesting story to tell to her brother later, along with the interesting pumpkin.

---------later that day-----------

"Now can we carve pumpkins?????" Rowan asked for the millionth time that afternoon. He stood in the doorway of Eva's room, bouncing around like Leo Valdez after too much coffee.

Eva spun around on her chair and sighed. "Yeah, sure."

As they descended downstairs, Rowan asked, "What took you so long? Halloween is TONIGHT!"

"Homework," she replied. Well, it was partially true. She didn't want to introduce her seven-year-old brother to the concept of Procrastinating By Reading Fanfiction. She shouldn't even have been reading fanfiction in the first place, but she had to take her mind off of what happened that morning.

Eva led her brother into the kitchen. "Why didn't you let me look at the pumpkin?" he asked.

"It's a sur-priiiise!" Eva sang. Rowan laughed as Eva walked to the cupboards, opened the tallest cabinet, and pulled out the blue pumpkin. (A/n: don't question how she got it in there lol)

Rowan's eyes jaw dropped to the floor. "I-i-it's..."

"-blue!" Eva finished, placing it carefully on the island. "Funny story, actually-"

She stopped talking when Rowan began examining the pumpkin in the strangest ways possible, tapping the sides like an aye-aye and even putting his ear up against the side. She burst out laughing.

"This is gonna look so cool when we carve it!" he babbled excitedly. "It'll surprise everyone, it'll be so cool..."

Rowan went on as Eva ran off to get pumpkin carving supplies, and was spinning around on one of the island stools when she returned. He grabbed a knife and grinned, which would've looked menacing if he hadn't been wearing a dinosaur onesie.

--------short timeskip--------

It soon became evident that this pumpkin wasn't just different because of its color. Eva sometimes failed to hold down the pumpkin as Rowan sawed away at the top, and a crinkly sound would ripple through the air. She wondered if it had anything to do with the black cat she saw that morning, but focused on trying to prevent her brother from cutting himself.
Finally, Rowan triumphantly shouted "I did it!" He twisted the stem until the top of the pumpkin came loose and he yanked it out.
Surprisingly, the bottom was a clean, smooth light blue.
The siblings peered inside the pumpkin curiously, their eyes widening when they saw what was inside.
"CANDYYYY!!!!!!!" Rowan squealed, reaching inside and pulling out a fistful of miscellaneous blue sweets. Jelly beans, Laffy Taffy, Jolly Ranchers, and even what appeared to be blue Twix bars- Percy Jackson would've died of happiness. Eva smiled and began unwrapping a blue raspberry HI-CHEW.
"IS EVERYTHING OKAY?" their mother shouted from upstairs.
Eva and Rowan smiled at each other. "EVERYTHING'S GREAT!"

~the end~
Yeah, there's not really a plot, but I just kind of wrote this without one in mind.
Thanks for reading,
Lin :D
