Chapter 7
Shortly after Timothy's conversation with Tulip, Nurse Joy returned Electchu and Yamper fully healed. Electchu happily jumped onto Timothy's shoulder to give him a nuzzle while Sonia hugged Yamper and petted its head. After thanking Nurse Joy, Timothy, Coovers, Sonia, Electchu, Oshawott, and Yamper left the Pokemon Center and rode their Rotom Bicycles to Motostoke Station just in time to catch the next train heading to Wedgehurst.
Timothy, Coovers, and Sonia did their homework while their partners napped as they rode the train. They finished homework early, for their teachers didn't give them much for the first day. As soon as Coovers and Sonia put their textbooks and notebooks away, Timothy took the opportunity to pitch his idea to them.
"You want to make flyers to save the Pokemon?" Coovers asked.
"Why not? It makes perfect sense," Timothy said. "What's more effective in getting people to care about Pokemon about to lose their home than seeing the Pokemon themselves? If we make flyers asking for help with pictures of cute, innocent Pokemon, people will be so moved that they'll want to help them before the Magnolia Paddock is closed. In hindsight, we should've thought of this ages ago."
Coovers hesitated and said, "I don't know, Timbo. I see your logic, but it would be an awful lot of work since we would have to make enough flyers to hang all over the halls of a three-story building to raise our chances of people seeing them."
"True, but we can also use the number of fliers we need to our advantage," Timothy said. "There are all kinds of Pokemon at the Magnolia Paddock, so each flyer could be a picture of a different Pokemon or group of Pokemon. Plus, some Pokemon might interest people more than others, so it makes all the more sense that we show the variety of Pokemon we take care of."
"Still, it'll take a while to take pictures of so many Pokemon and then make those flyers," Coovers said. "Are you suggesting that we do this over the weekend?"
"No. We should do it as soon as we get home," Timothy said.
"What? That's practically going to take all night," Coovers said.
"Well, the Pokemon are living on borrowed time, Coovers. Goodness knows when a day might be set for their home to be demolished," Timothy said. "We must seize our opportunities to help them however we can."
Coovers bit his lip and looked away hesitantly. He scratched the back of his head, trying to think of another counter until he accepted that Timothy was right. He sighed in defeat, giving Timothy confidence until Coovers looked at him apologetically.
"Well, I hope you're right that this is the right idea and time to do it," Coovers said. "That said, if you want to have it done today, you'll have to count me out this time. I promised my mom I would look after my sister tonight while she's at work.
"That's alright, I understand," Timothy said before turning to Sonia. "Sonia, what about you? It's your grandmother's paddock and part of your home, so it's your choice whether we do this."
Sonia furrowed her brow, growing concerned with how Timothy constantly pitched ideas as though he was coming up with get-rich schemes. Yet between flyers and trying to get attention through popularity, Timothy's new idea was more plausible, and the wild Pokemon were as close to Sonia's heart as Professor Magnolia's. Whether the plan was crazy or not, it warmed Sonia's heart that Timothy was sincerely devoted to help.
"All right, let's do it," Sonia said.
"Awesome," Timothy said. "I'll let my folks know I'll be at the paddock with you. I suggest we consider which Pokemon we will take pictures of while we're not home yet, so we're not deciding when we get to your house."
"Sounds good. Let's do it," Sonia said.

For the remainder of the ride to Wedgehurst, Timothy and Sonia discussed which Pokemon to take pictures of, with Coovers making suggestions. When the train reached Wedgehurst Station, they woke up their Pokemon and exited the train before turning their Rotom Phones into bicycles again. Coovers and Oshawott waved farewell as Coovers rode his bicycle to his house. Timothy and Sonia waved back as they headed to Sonia and Professor Magnolia's house with Electchu and Yamper.
Timothy and Sonia continued to discuss their plan as they rode side by side. However, when they reached the house, they saw Professor Magnolia through the dining room window. The professor was sitting on the table and holding a piece of paper. She was resting her head on her arm, having a crestfallen expression with her eyes closed. Timothy and Sonia looked at each other in concern, and they went inside with their Pokemon after turning their bicycles back into phones.
Professor Magnolia turned to the dining room entrance, hearing Timothy, Sonia, Electchu, and Yamper enter. The professor wished Sonia had announced she was home to hide the paper, yet she knew she couldn't hide what was in it from her granddaughter forever. Sonia's heart sank as Professor Magnolia looked away when she and Timothy came in, immediately figuring out what was happening.
"They sent a date. Didn't they, Gran?" Sonia said.
Professor Magnolia sighed and nodded with her head down.
"They're going to demolish the paddock this Friday," she said.
"This Friday?!" Sonia shouted. "Don't they realize what they're doing?! Don't they understand they're only giving us days to figure out what to do with so many Pokemon?!"
"The way they're discussing it in this letter, I don't know if they know they're destroying perfectly good land, let alone the homes of wild Pokemon," Professor Magnolia said.
"And we still don't know who bought the land?" Sonia asked.
Professor Magnolia shook her head.
"It's all the same. When it's not representatives, it's attorneys," she said. "These people, these monsters, are destroying land and lives without a second thought. Goodness knows if they will show themselves when I have to sign or when they do whatever they want to this large part of our home."
Sonia looked at her grandmother in disbelief, and her hands turned into balls of fists, on the verge of punching a hole in the wall. Yamper whimpered, wishing it could do something to comfort its dear partner. Timothy and Electchu looked at each other with Electchu's ears hanging low.
Timothy furrowed his brow, wanting to meet the people who bought the paddock under the professor's nose and give them a piece of his mind. Then he looked at Sonia, and he stepped toward to put her hand on her shoulder. Sonia turned her head to Timothy, who gave her a small smile.
"A couple of days could be all we need," Timothy said. "If we add the date to the flyers, people will understand the urgency and want to help all the more."
"Flyers? What are you talking about?" Professor Magnolia asked.
Sonia smiled at Timothy for his optimism, then turned to her grandmother.
"Timothy got this idea for us to make flyers to hang at school, asking people to save the Pokemon," she said. "We're hoping that if more people hear about what's happening, they'll want to help."
"Hmm, that sounds like a nice idea, but I'm not sure what bringing your fellow students in the know will do. It's not as though they can convince their parents to take the wild Pokemon home with him," Professor Magnolia said.
"True, but maybe they could bring it up to their parents, who might have some ideas on what we can do or maybe have connections to places where the Pokemon can have a new home," Sonia said. "I know it's a long shot, Gran, but we won't know unless we make every effort to let our voice be heard. It's worth a try if for no other reason than to say that we've given it everything we've got. If we lose the Magnolia Paddock, we lose it fighting for our Pokemon till the end."
Professor Magnolia raised her eyebrow, having never heard Sonia speak this way before. She looked at Timothy and saw the same look of determination Sonia had. The very thing made the professor smile, for it warmed her heart to see such passion between her granddaughter and her best friend, particularly when knowing what Sonia felt in her heart. Professor Magnolia put the letter down and stood up with her cane to face the teenagers and their partners.
"Very well. Add my number to your flyers so I can give anyone who has seen them the details," she said. "I'm counting on you to give it everything you've got."
Timothy smiled and said, "We won't let you down, professor. We'll start taking pictures right away.
"Very good. Take your pictures while feeding the Pokemon their dinner if you would," Professor Magnolia said.
"Yes, ma'am," Sonia said.
"Pikachu," Electchu said.
"Arf, arf," Yamper barked.
************************************************************
Timothy and Sonia fed the wild Pokemon at the Magnolia Paddock for the next three hours, with Electchu and Yamper helping. Before giving a group of Pokemon or individual Pokemon their food, Timothy took pictures of them with his Rotom Phone while Sonia positioned the Pokemon for each shot. They started with the groups of Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble so there were flyers to establish the owner of the paddock gives new trainers their Pokemon. Timothy then took pictures of a Bagon recovering from the flu while Sonia gave it its medicine, followed by a pair of Xatu with their eggs. When Timothy and Sonia got to where groups of Eevee and its evolutions were playing in the field, Sonia rounded them together so Timothy could take a picture of all of them. The wild Pokemon didn't understand why their caretakers were taking pictures, for they were unaware of their situation. Still, after years of knowing Timothy and Sonia, the Pokemon trusted that they had good reason, if any, to want pictures.
Timothy had hundreds of pictures on his Rotom Phone by the time they finished. He uploaded them to Sonia's laptop, and they looked through them while Professor Magnolia ordered dinner. They narrowed it down to a couple dozen pictures, one for each flyer, which they thought was enough to have flyers throughout the school. As Timothy and Sonia ate pizza in Sonia's room, they made the basic outline of the flyers while Electchu and Yamper played after eating their dinner.
It took two hours to print each flyer because they had to put a different picture of a Pokemon or a group of Pokemon for each one. Once they finished, Sonia put them in two folders containing 12 flyers. She put one folder in her backpack, and Timothy put the other in his. When they finished, Timothy and Sonia sighed heavily, with Timothy resting on Sonia's desk chair and Sonia plopping onto her bed. They stayed still momentarily before Sonia took out her Rotom Phone to check the time.
"Yikes, it's 9:13. Glad we got homework out of the way before we got home," she said.
"Me too. I didn't think it would be close to bedtime by the time we finished," Timothy said. At least the hard part is over. Now, we just need to bring the flyers to school and put them up."
"Yeah, well, we'll need to have them approved first," Sonia pointed out. "I think we should eat quickly during lunch tomorrow, then go to the main office for approval."
"Sounds like a plan," Timothy said before getting off the chair. "Meantime, I'm gonna get Electchu and head home."
Sonia hummed while still lying down and staring at the ceiling. Then her mouth curled down, feeling a sense of unease as Timothy walked to the door. She didn't want this moment with Timothy to end by just letting him head home. Not when the way Timothy looked at Tulip was etched in her mind. Sonia heard Timothy turn the doorknob and shoot back to her feet.
"Timothy, wait," she said.
Timothy stopped just as he was opening the door. Sonia walked to stand between Timothy and the door, making him step back. She opened her mouth to speak, then paused. It seemed so simple to let out her feelings, but now that she was at this point, she doubted the timing. That it was right to tell Timothy just when he was about to head home and his mind fixed on their cause. Sonia looked away, struggling to muster the courage until she caved and said what else was on her mind.
"Look, over the past 24 hours, I've seen you come up with more out-there ideas than I think you've ever had in your lifetime," Sonia said. "Don't get me wrong. Your heart's in the right place, and I adore that. I just worry there will be a point where you take things too far."
"Are you saying I shouldn't try to help?" Timothy asked.
"No. Of course not," Sonia said. "Just be careful with how far you go. You know? Learn to stop. The last thing I want is for you to get hurt."
Timothy frowned and looked out Sonia's bedroom window, where she had a good view of the paddock.
"I don't know if I can stop," he said. "Too many unfair things are happening to me and my friends. Everything is making less sense with someone buying the land and all that happened in school today. Coming up with ideas is all I can do to do something about it. I just want my attempts to matter. I want people to see a Timothy Durbin that makes an impact."
Sonia tilted her head and asked, "Is that why you were so bent on becoming popular? To gain recognition that you matter in a big way, and if you fail, you at least put me and Coovers on that pedestal for our personal hopes?"
"To a degree, yes," Timothy said. "I did hope to enjoy going to school in a big city, seeing new Pokemon, and the after-school activities, but I want to believe that, through notoriety in Motostoke High, I can be something more. No being looked down on, being made fun of, or worrying about the things precious to me being taken from me or those I care about. I want to be someone of value. You know?"
Sonia's eyes widened as she had never seen this side of her childhood friend before. She wondered how long Timothy began to feel this way and how she could have missed him developing this desire for notoriety. After half a minute, Sonia's look of shock turned into a warm smile, and she gently turned Timothy's head to face her with her hand.
"Well, for the record, it means the world to me that you're giving it your all for me and Gran," Sonia said.
Timothy smiled and said, "Well, the paddock has been a part of home for me just as much as it has been for you and your grandmother."
"It's still more than I can ask for," Sonia said. "There's no one else I want to face this with me. Not even Coovers."
Timothy's smile grew as he looked into Sonia's cyan eyes. Before Sonia knew it, Timothy had pulled her into a tight hug, making her cheeks turn cherry red. Then she closed her eyes and hugged him back, resting her head against Timothy's with a smile. They hugged for several seconds before Timothy moved back and held Sonia's hands up.
"I'm staying by your side until the end, Sonia. I promise," Timothy said.
***************************************************************
It was a quarter till 10 when Timothy and Electchu got home. Electchu dozed off on Timothy's shoulder as he rode from Sonia's house, having tired itself from playing with Yamper. Timothy smiled as he took his partner off his shoulder and cradled it with one hand while turning his bicycle back into a phone. When Timothy went inside, he heard crying coming from the living room. He rolled his eyes, figuring Helga was worried about him despite calling her hours ago to let her know he was at the Magnolias. He walked to the living room with Electchu still in his arm to find Entalmorfious and Helga sitting on the couch with Entalmorfious rubbing his wife's back as she sobbed. Entalmorfious wore dark blue jeans, a wrinkled red buttoned shirt, and his bald spot was plain to see without his inflatable suit to cover it. Timothy sighed, not looking forward to his mom coddling him again.
"I'm home," he said robotically.
Entalmorfious and Helga turned their heads to Timothy and Electchu, and a new set of tears ran down Helga's face. But instead of rushing over to squeeze the life out of Timothy, she buried her face on Entalmorfious' shoulder while Entalmorfious looked at Timothy with a fragile smile.
"Welcome home, son," he said. "Why don't you take a seat? We've got some news."
Timothy looked at his dad and then his mom, unsure how to react. He sat on a chair facing the couch and put Electchu down to nap on the floor. The room was silent for half a minute as Timothy's parents left him wondering if someone had died, were having a fight, or getting separated or divorced.
"Is everything okay?" Timothy asked to break the ice.
"Oh, yes. Everything's fine. I've got some great news, in fact," Entalmorfious said.
Timothy grew unsettled, for it sounded as though Entalmorfious was trying to convince himself that there was great news. Entalmorfious took a moment to think about what to say before looking at his son with an uneasy grin.
"So, I had a big day at work today," he began. "In short, the pitch meeting went very well. The executives loved Captain Qwerty the Qwilfish and happily approved of Larry building the restaurant."
"Kay, that's great, but why is Mom crying?" Timothy asked.
Entalmorfious paused and said, "Well, that's where the...great news comes in. Larry finally saw my potential and promoted me to be head of a new division. So...we're moving to the Unova region."
"What?! We're moving to Unova?!" Timothy shouted.
Electchu jumped, woken up by Timothy's shouting. Helga whimpered as though hearing those words physically hurt her. Entalmorfious winced while trying to maintain his weak enthusiasm.
"You make it sound like it's a bad thing, son," Entalmorfious said.
"Of course I am! This has been our home since before I was born!" Timothy yelled. "How can you be okay with leaving everything behind?!"
"Well, having my own division is a big deal," Entalmorfious said. "There isn't anyone else in this new division yet, but Larry is eager to fix that fast. So, we're moving to Black City in Unova this Friday."
"We're moving this Friday?!" Timothy shouted. "But our whole lives are here! Our friends are here! I promised Sonia I'd be there when she and Professor Magnolia lose the paddock!"
"We're going to have a new life in Unova, and you'll make new friends in a new school," Entalmorfious said. "And I'm sure Sonia will understand you can't be there for her."
"But this is totally unfair. Why can't we just, oh, I don't know, not move?" Timothy asked.
"L-look, Timothy, we know this is hard on you. It's hard on all of us," Helga whimpered.
"Then that's all the more reason not to do it," Timothy said.
"Timothy, try to understand. Larry is my boss," Entalmorfious said.
"Can't you just say no? Surely, Larry can understand that he's asking too much of you," Timothy asked.
"No, it's not that simple," Entalmorfious said. "Larry is counting on me. I have to do what he wants no matter what."
Timothy stared at his father, astounded. From how Entalmorfious struggled to smile, it was clear that he didn't want to leave any more than Timothy or Helga. They all knew what was being demanded was unreasonable, yet Entalmorfious was as quick to make excuses for his superior's wishes as ever. Timothy scowled and stood up, looking down at his father.
"I can't believe you," he said.
Timothy stormed up the stairs to his room, with Electchu following him. As he went into his room, he overheard Entalmorfious saying, "He'll be okay." He slammed his door behind himself and Electchu to make it clear that he wouldn't be okay. Timothy sat on his bed and let out a frustrated scream.
Electchu hopped onto the bed with its ears hanging low and nudged Timothy's arm to get his attention. Timothy's face softened as he saw how his Pokemon was saddened by the news. He picked Electchu up to hug it, feeling somewhat calm from holding his faithful Pikachu, but no comfort from Electchu, however heartfelt and pure, could erase the pain and anger of losing their home.
In that moment, Timothy realized that nothing he hoped for that day came to pass. He woke up believing this was his year and ended the day losing more than he could ever have imagined.
