Chapter 19

It was a few minutes after Coovers and Oshawott left before Timothy decided to go home. He turned his Rotom Phone into a bicycle and took the main road through Wedgehurst to Postwick with Electchu on his shoulder. They headed straight to Timothy's room as soon as they got inside their house. There were towers of boxes containing Timothy's stuff, the shells in his bookcase were detached, and there was a plastic bag and a screwdriver ready to take apart Timothy's bed frame in the morning. Timothy took off his backpack and paused before he slammed it to the ground. He sat on the side of his bed and ran his fingers through his hair as he grunted in frustration. Electchu hopped on the bed, standing next to Timothy and Timothy looked at his beloved Pokemon with a tear in his eye.

"How could this happen, Eletchu?" Timothy asked. "A few hours ago, everything was great. We got payback against our bullies, the Magnolia Paddock isn't going to become a stadium, and then, because of one mistake, we lost our friends. And Sonia...all this time she..."

Timothy shut his eyes and looked away from Electchu. Electchu watched Timothy's frustration grow with its ears hanging low.

"I mean, they have every right to be mad at me, but how did Coovers expect me to react to this hours before moving?" Timothy asked. "You think I haven't gone through enough thinking Sonia saw me as lower than dirt before we made up? Would I never find out unless I ditched our friends and Coovers spilled the beans like that?"

"Pikachu," Electchu said, shaking its head to express that it didn't know.

Timothy groaned and hung his head while running his fingers through his hair again. He stayed still for several seconds before he shook his head.

"No. No, it can't end like this. I can't let this be how Sonia and I go our separate ways," Timothy said. "I want her to know that I'm sorry. If I knew, I would have ignored Tulip's advances. I want her to know that I..."

Timothy's eyes widened, and his voice died in his throat. It had been so long since the day before Valentine's Day that he had almost forgotten the feeling of wanting to say the words. Electchu moved closer to Timothy on all fours, wondering if he would bring himself to say it. After a few more seconds, Timothy's face grew serious again, and he took out his Rotom phone.

"You know what? Sonia's got to know how I really feel. If it's too late, so be it, but I need her to hear me say it," he said. "Rotom, call Sonia."

"Calling Sonia," Timothy's Rotom Phone said.

Timothy held his phone to his ear as the phone started ringing. Electchu grew uneasy, doubting Sonia would answer Timothy's call. Timothy waited for half a minute before his phone stopped ringing.

"Sorry, Sonia's not answering," Rotom said. "Do you want to leave a voicemail?"

"No, try again," Timothy said.

"Okay. Calling Sonia again," Rotom said.

Timothy drummed his fingers on his lap as the phone rang again. He was prepared to say sorry the second he heard Sonia answer. Yet the longer he waited, he began to accept that Sonia wouldn't answer the phone.

"Sorry, Sonia's not answering," Rotom said. "Do you want to leave a voicemail?"

Timothy opened his mouth to tell Rotom to try again, then stopped to think about it. For all he knew, Sonia was in bed still crying and would throw her Rotom Phone against the wall upon finding out Timothy was calling. Timothy sighed, accepting his only chance was to leave a message on the slight chance she would listen after letting out her grief.

"Yes. Leave a voicemail, please," he said.

"Okay. Leave your message at the sound of the beep," Rotom said.

There was a pause before Timothy heard a beep. Timothy had half a mind to start with an apology, but deep down, he knew that wasn't what he wanted to say. It took him a moment before he realized he was taking too long and said what was on his mind.

"So, the past hour has been horrible and confusing," Timothy said. "Not only did I let you and Coovers down, but Coovers told me you are in love with me. That you loved me even when you said you didn't."

Timothy and Electchu wondered if Sonia would be upset that Coovers revealed her secret or too brokenhearted to care. Maybe say she doesn't love Timothy anymore if she had answered the phone. Timothy was silent for several seconds before facing the wall, imagining Sonia standing before him with a melancholic look.

"You know, I was prepared for you to shoot me down that night," Timothy said. "Not that I expected you to say what Abigail pressured you to say, but I thought I was the only one who believed we could be more than friends. It never crossed my mind that you might feel the same, and I didn't think you meant it when you said it could happen in the future. I thought those were just words to gently let me down so we could move on. In any case, you denied your feelings and I couldn't help chasing Tulip. We broke each other's hearts, so since I'm leaving tomorrow, maybe it's good that we're even."

Timothy flinched as though he had stabbed himself by saying those words. Electchu whimpered, worried that Timothy was going to end the voicemail there. After several seconds, Timothy's mouth shook, and he sniffled as he shed a tear.

"No. No, it's not good at all. I don't want us to be even, Sonia. I want us to be together," Timothy confessed. "We could've tried a long-distance relationship and reunite after graduation. That doesn't usually work for people, but it might have worked for us. We've known each other since we were little. We could've put up with being away for four years. I would've waited that long to see you smile again, hold you close, and pick up where we left off. That's how much I love you."

Electchu's ears perked up in shock. The week before Valentine's Day, Timothy admitted that he had strong feelings for Sonia and wanted to ask her out, but Timothy had never said those words. Timothy eased up as though his chest had become lighter. He chuckled and shook his head.

"You're probably angry that I'm saying it now, and you have every right to be," Timothy said. "But the truth is even when I accepted that we couldn't happen, I've loved you. All the fun we had, taking care of the Pokemon at the Magnolia Paddock, going through preschool to becoming high schoolers with Coovers and our Pokemon, none of that would've meant so much without you there. I said that the paddock is part of home, but all the Pokemon in the world living there wouldn't mean anything without you there with me. I lucked out with growing up with someone as amazing as you, Sonia, and I'm so sorry that I let you down. I swear that if our paths cross again and you're willing to try, I will treat you like a queen. I will work hard to make you so happy that you will forget tonight ever happened. You jump into my arms, and I will never let you go, even if my life depends on it."

New tears ran down Timothy's face as he made his promise. He imagined Sonia pausing before shaking her head and saying it was too late. Perhaps make a remark regarding Tulip. Even so, Timothy hoped Sonia would hug him for no reason other than to properly say goodbye if he told her in person. Timothy wiped the tears from his eyes and put on a weak smile.

"Well, I should let you go now, assuming you ever hear this. My dad will want me out of bed first thing in the morning to help load the moving truck," Timothy said before finishing with his voice cracking. "No matter what happens, Sonia, I love you and I always will."

Timothy hung up and let out a heavy sigh with his shoulders slumped. New tears ran down his face as his heart ached to bid Sonia farewell. Electchu nudged Timothy's hand with its head, and Timothy patted its head without looking at it. Timothy smiled for a moment, appreciative of Electchu's support. Then he furrowed his brow, shut his eyes, dropped his phone, and yelled while stomping and running his fingers through his hair.

"Crap!" Timothy shouted. "Crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, crap! I just told Sonia I love her after breaking her heart before leaving her life forever! I'm so dumb! So lame! I'm nothing but a big, heartless jerk! This can't possibly get any worse!"

"Pikachu," Electchu said, reluctantly agreeing with Timothy.

Just then, there was a knock on the door, and Entalmorfious came in without waiting for Timothy to answer. He wore a round plastic Shuckle shell that hid most of his yellow onesie while holding a sign for an insurance company. Entalmorfious smiled brightly and giggled as though he was ready to dance vigorously.

"Heya, champ," Entalmorfious greeted before noticing the tears in Timothy's eyes. "Are you okay?"

"Not really, Dad. I'm having a terrible night," Timothy said.

"Oh, is that so? Well, you're in luck because I'm gonna brighten your night in the blink of an eye," Entalmorfious said. "Have you seen your mom?"

"No. Electchu and I just got home a couple of minutes ago," Timothy said.

"Ah, she might still be in the kitchen," Entalmorfious said before he peeked his head out of Timothy's room and called out, "Honey Wooloo, get up here, quick!"

Timothy and Electchu looked at each other, curious, as they heard Helga go up the staircase. She came into Timothy's room, sniffling as she carried a box of books. Helga looked at her husband with her mouth quivering, half expecting him to say something about how exciting the move would be when saying those things would only break her heart more.

"Are you guys ready? I got terrific news," Entalmorfious said.

"What? You found us a tiny apartment in Black City, and we'll have to put all our stuff in storage?" Helga whined.

"Larry promised to supply costumes less embarrassing than Stogie the Skovet?" Timothy asked half-heartedly.

"Pika, pika, pika, Pikachu?" Electchu asked despite knowing no one understood it.

"Better than any of those things combined," Entalmorfious said before slamming his sign to the ground. "We're not moving."

The room instantly became silent. Timothy, Helga, and Pikachu looked at each other, unsure if they heard Entalmorfious correctly. Entalmorfious kept grinning, waiting for the news to hit his family.

"We're... not moving?" Helga asked.

"Are you serious?" Timothy asked as he stood up.

"Dead serious," Entalmorfious said proudly. "I discussed it with the other junior ad executives, and we decided to quit. We're going to create our own advertising business where they elected me chairman, and we will take turns making pitches and wearing costumes that will be far better than what Larry has made us wear all these years."

The room grew silent again as Helga, Timothy, and Electchu processed what Entalmorfious said. Then Helga dropped her box of books and jumped up and down, screaming joyfully. She jumped into Entalmorfious' arms and decorated his face with kisses, making Entalmorfious laugh as he hugged her back.

"You stood up to Larry!" Helga squealed. "Now, you get to be the top dog and use all the potential he wasted on you!"

"That's right, Honey Wooloo. My new employees and I all get to show our potential to the fullest now," Entalmorfious declared.

Timothy stood in place, still stupefied by the news. Electchu was equally shocked for a moment before it began laughing and jumped onto Timothy's shoulder to hug his head. The hug snapped Timothy out of his shock, and he cackled as he picked up his Pokemon partner and began spinning around while holding it. Entalmorfious and Helga smiled as they watched their son celebrate with his Pokemon.

"Well, sleep well tonight, Timothy. I'll help you unpack your stuff when you get home from school tomorrow," Entalmorfious said. "Anyway, can you help me get this costume off, Honey Wooloo?"

"I sure can, Mr. Bossman," Helga replied, giving Entalmorfious a face Timothy never wanted to see his mother make again.

Entalmorfious and Helga exited Timothy's room hand in hand with Entalmorfious closing the door behind him. Timothy and Electchu continued to celebrate, with Timothy dancing while still holding Electchu. Eventually, Timothy began to tire and sat back on his bed and put Electchu down next to him.

"This is great, Electchu. We're not moving after all," Timothy said as he picked up his Rotom Phone again. "Let's call Sonia and Coovers, and -"

Timothy's smile disappeared, and he stared at the wall in realization. Electchu looked at Timothy confused until it remembered that their friends were mad at its partner. Timothy dropped his Rotom Phone again and laid on his back while holding his head with both hands as it hit him.

"Aw, crap."
