Chapter 26
"Do you know how long it'll be before I get any information?" Adrian asks, nervously biting his lip.
The hospital secretary gives him a sad smile and shakes her head. "I'm sorry, but I don't know. It could be all night."
"O-Okay," Adrian mumbles and makes his way back into the waiting room. It has been about twenty minutes since he'd arrived with Luna, who he'd rode with in an ambulance. With a loud groan, he plops down in one of the chairs, ignoring the looks he receives from the others in the room. He brings his legs up to his chest and tucks his head between them, trying his best not to let his mind wonder.
"Adrian!" he hears a frantic voice call, not too long after. He lifts his head up to see Luna's parents running into the waiting room, followed by his own parents. Alyssa kneels down in front of him, gently taking his hands into hers. "What's going on? What happened?"
"I-I..." Adrian stutters, staring down at his hands. Alyssa lets out a sigh and takes a glance at Adrian's grey sweatshirt which is covered in random splotches of red liquid, causing her to gasp. With a hard swallow, she forces her eyes back up to Adrian's pale face.
Angelo, who has also noticed the stained sweatshirt, takes a seat next to the man, softly rubbing his back. "Take your time, kid. You don't have to rush yourself."
Adrian's parents make sure to stay nearby, Belle gently running her fingers through his hair. It takes a while before Adrian can muster up the courage to speak. When he finally does, all he can choke out is a quiet, "I-I'm sorry..." before he, once again, goes silent. Luna's parents glance at each other and prepare to move until Adrian slowly starts to recall the events from just over an hour prior.
"Luna? Luna?! Babe, what happened?!" Adrian asked over the phone, glancing up at the red light in front of him. He'd been stopped for a couple of seconds now, trying his hardest to abide by the law while quickly making his way to Luna. When he received no response, he immediately felt his heart fall to the pit of his stomach. Muttering quiet curses under his breath, he searched for Luna's location on his phone. He threw his phone to the side and looked at the bare streets around him before stepping on the gas pedal, ignoring the bright signal for him to remain stopped. Going as fast as possible, he sped through the streets of his New York suburb, making his way toward the location shown on his phone. What feels like five years, but only ten minutes, of backroads, highways, and ignored stoplights, finally come to an end when he approaches what seems to be the site of his boyfriend. Adrian climbs out of the car and takes a look around the empty backroad, confusion filling his mind when he sees no trace of his boyfriend. All it takes is a faint crackling sound for Adrian to notice the ditch on the side of the road, causing his brain to shut down. As he stared at the sight of the ditch, his body went numb and cold in fear. Almost perfectly in the middle of the ditch, is a familiar black car, almost completely destroyed as it's flipped upside down. Shards of glass filled the ground around it along with small black pieces from the hood and sides of the car. Worst of all, small orange flames were engulfing what looked like the back of the car. Before he could even register what he was doing, Adrian took off into the ditch and toward the car, his mind blank. It took a couple of tries but he eventually pried the door off of the car and opened it to see his lover, covered in glass and blood, completely unconscious. He ripped off the seatbelt and gently slipped his arms under Luna's limp body, pulling him out of the burning car. Using what is left of his adrenaline, he carried Luna as far away from the car as possible and dropped down to the ground with a heavy sigh.
"F*ck..." he muttered, under his breath as he used his sweatshirt to softly wipe the blood away from Luna's face, beginning to feel a bit sick. He brung his hand to Luna's wrist, feeling around for any sign of a pulse. Relief filled his body when he finally began to feel a slight throb on his finger tips. "Baby..." he whispered, softly running his thumb across Luna's blood stained face. With a sigh, he pulled Luna's body close to his, feeling his entire world come crashing down.
"I-I'm sorry..." Adrian sobs into his arms, after explaining what had happened. Alyssa tries her best to blink back tears as she runs her fingers through Adrian's hair.
"It's okay, Adrian," she whispers, glancing at her husband who wipes his eyes as he stands up to walk out of the waiting room. "You have nothing to be sorry for.."
"I'm gonna go make sure he's okay," Nick tells them before following Angelo out of the room.
"I-If I didn't mess up all of his work, he wouldn't have even had to leave the house in the first place..." he shakes his head. Belle takes a seat next to him and places a kiss to his head.
"It's not your fault," she says. "Don't blame yourself, Honey."
"You saved his life," Alyssa gives him a small smile. "I can't thank you enough for that. None of this is your fault."
"I'm sorry," he mutters, staring down at his hands.
"Look at me," Alyssa cups his face in her hands and forces his eyes up to her. "You have nothing to be sorry for. You're not to blame for this, alright?" she uses her thumbs to wipe the tears off of his cheeks before kissing his forehead. Adrian lets out a shake breath and nods his head as Alyssa shoots him a reassuring smile before sitting down next to him.
Not long after, a familiar, curly-haired male comes rushing into the waiting room, followed by his girlfriend. "Where is he?! Is he okay?!" Gio asks, frantically.
"We don't know anything yet, Gio," she tells him. He sighs and sits down in one of the chairs. Tia shoots Adrian a sad smile before sitting next to her boyfriend and wrapping her arms around his shoulders.
Belle slides her hand from Adrian's hair, down to his back. "Honey, maybe you should take a nap for a bit. It's gonna be a while before we find out anything."
With a shake of his head, he firmly says, "No. I don't want to risk missing anything."
"We'll be here to wake you up if anything happens. You're gonna give yourself a heart attack if you sit here stressing the whole time."
Adrian lets out a sigh before allowing his head to fall into Belle's lap. "I-I'll try," he whispers, closing his eyes.

Hours later, Adrian is still awake. In fact, he is the only one awake. Tia and Gio are cuddled in the corner, while Nick slept next to his sleeping wife who was resting her head on his shoulder. Alyssa and Angelo, who'd finally come back to the waiting room, were the last couple to fall asleep, in the corner of the room. Adrian, who still rests his head in Belle's lap, is now blankly staring at the ceiling, waiting patiently for any news from the doctor. He watches many doctors come out, becoming quickly disappointed when he watches them talk to the other families in the waiting room. It doesn't take long before they're the only family left, still waiting on any news about their loved one.
Adrian's wait soon comes to an end as a woman in a long, white coat enters the waiting room, holding a clipboard in her tan hands. "Family of Luna Petít?" she calls, looking directly at him. As if the worlds loudest alarm had rang, the entire family jumps out of their slumber and looks at the woman.
"That's us!" Adrian nods, sitting up straight. "Is he okay?! What's wrong with him?! Did he die?!" he rushes out, calming down a bit when his father squeezes his shoulder.
"No, he did not die," the doctor chuckles. "Luna has a severe concussion, which caused him to go unconscious for a couple of hours, along with a deep cut on his forehead which we had a stitch up. His body seems to be okay, the only problem is that he has three fractured ribs and a small burn on his torso from the seatbelt. Along with that, he had a small cut on his wrist from his bracelet," she says and watches as relief washes over all of their faces.
"But he's okay, right?" Angelo asks, biting his lip, nervously.
"Yes. He is awake and as bright as ever!" she smiles. "He's okay to have visitors, but I would only suggest maybe one or two at a time. Perhaps, the parents?"
Angelo and Alyssa both look up at her before glancing at each other. There's a silent communication between them before Alyssa looks toward her son's boyfriend who is staring down at his hands. "Adrian?" she calls, causing his head to snap up at her. "Would you like to see him first?"
"I–" he starts. "A-Are you sure? You're his parents..."
"That's okay," she smiles. "Go ahead and have your moment."
With a sigh, he stands up from the chair. The doctor gives him a small smile before leading him towards Luna's room. "Boyfriend?" she questions as they walk down the hallway. Adrian silently nods his head, keeping his eyes down at his feet. "He was asking about you."
"Really?" Adrian finally looks up at her.
"Mhm," she hums and gives him another smile as they approach a door near the end of the hall. She slowly cracks open the door and peeks inside. "Luna, you have visitor," she tells him before opening it wider, allowing Adrian inside.
Immediately, he spots Luna sitting in the middle of the hospital bed, sipping from a juice box. There is a small bandage near his hairline, along with a couple of bruises and scratches that litter the sides of his face. Adrian's breath hitches before he finally decides to step inside, rushing over to Luna to pull him into a gentle hug. As he wraps his arms around the smaller boy, he begins to feel tears well up in his eyes. "I'm sorry, Luna..." he breathes into the crook of his boyfriend's neck, melting into his hold.
"For what, babe?" Luna furrows his brows, slipping his arms around Adrian's neck. "Are you crying?" he asks when he feels a wet sensation on his skin. "Don't cry, Honey."
"I-It's my fault that you're in here...that you got hurt..."
"What? No it isn't," Luna slides his hands up to run them through Adrian's messy hair. "You has nothing to do with this.."
"Yes it is," Adrian cries. "If I didn't mess up your cupcakes, you wouldn't have even had to leave the house..."
Luna pulls away from the hug to take Adrian's hands in his, similar to the way his mother did. "Baby, you had no way of knowing this was going to happen. It's not your fault."
Adrian lets out a shaky breath as he looks down at their hands. "O-Okay..."
Luna tips his chin up so their eyes meet. "I'm serious," he softly kisses Adrian's cheek before pulling him into another hug.
"I love you," Adrian whispers. "More than anything in the world."
"That's a bold statement," Luna giggles and pulls away.
Adrian shoots him a small smile. "Well, it's true..."
"I love you, too, Babe," Luna says and motions for him to sit down. Adrian pulls a chair up, next to Luna's bed, and plops down, playing with Luna's fingers. "Can I ask you a question?"
"Of course. What's up?"
"What happened to me?"
Adrian furrows his brows. "You don't remember?"
"All I remember is that man following me and then I crashed...I think..."
"I found you on the side of the road and the car was on fire. I had to pull you out...and seeing you like that...it was probably the scariest moment of my entire life..."
"You saved me?" Luna's eyes widen.
"I-I guess...if that's what you would call it..."
"Aw! You're my knight in shining armor!" he cackles as Adrian playfully rolls his eyes. "Where's everyone else?"
"They're still in the waiting room. The Doctor only allowed a couple of people at a time."
"Aw..." he pouts. "I want to see them."
"Oh, should I leave?"
"No! Of course not!" Luna shakes his head. "I just want to see everybody all together."
"I can ask the doctor," Adrian stands up and makes his way out of the room. It isn't long before he returns, followed by the rest of the group.
"Oh, my baby," Alyssa says, pulling Luna into a hug. Angelo leans down to place a gentle kiss on Luna's head.
"Hi, Mama. Hi, Papa," Luna giggles.
"How you feeling, kiddo?" Angelo asks.
Luna shrugs his shoulders. "I feel like I just got in a car crash," he says. "My head really hurts.."
"Did they give you pain medication?" Gio questions, leaning against the wall.
"Yeah, they gave me something to relieve my headache but it's not working very well."
"It's not too bad though, right?" Adrian cuts in. "Do you want to get the doctor?"
Luna shakes his head with a soft smile. "No, it's okay." The next couple of hours are spent with jokes and laughter from the family. Eventually, they begin to file out of the room as they realize how late it is. Soon enough, Adrian and Luna's parents are the only people left in the room. "Babe, it's almost midnight. Don't you have your conference tomorrow?"
"That doesn't matter."
"Yes it does. You've been talking about it for weeks. You should go home and rest."
"No," Adrian states as one of the nurses walks in.
"Mr. Petít?" she raises an eyebrow causing Luna to shift his attention towards her. "You'll be free to go home at around 7pm tomorrow but we have a couple more tests to run to make sure you're alright."
"Okay, thank you," he smiles at the nurse before she leaves the room. "See, Adrian? I'll be here when your conference is over. Don't miss it."
"Babe..."
"I'm serious. Go rest, please. Don't worry about me," Luna tells him.
Adrian sighs before finally giving in. He nods his head and stands up from the chair. "I'll see you tomorrow, okay?" he leans down to press his lips to Luna's forehead.
"I love you," Luna cups his face and pecks his lips.
Angelo frowns his nose up and covers his eyes. "Gross," he whispers causing the couple to roll their eyes, playfully.
"I love you too, Baby," Adrian tells him. Luna's parents hug him and bid him goodbye before heading out of the hospital room along with Adrian.

"How you feeling?" Tia asks as Adrian walks into the building, the next day. How is he feeling? Bad. He's feeling terrible, in fact. Spending the night without Luna for the first time since they'd moved in together was hard. He'd barely gotten any sleep, due to the feeling of emptiness on the right side of the bed. Riot's small body was a bit of a help, but not nearly enough for him to be well-rested. As much as he hates to admit it, he needs Luna. And that fact alone, makes the entire situation a lot scarier.
"Not too hot," Adrian yawns. "But I'll be okay."
"How is Luna?" she asks, giving him a sad smile.
"He's okay. The doctor said he can leave later on tonight," Adrian shrugs. "But I don't want to talk about that anymore. Let's just get this conference over with," he sighs. Tia softly pats his back before following him into the large conference room.
The day consists of hour long speeches from company CEO's, including an extremely short speech from Adrian. Instead of his normally social self, Adrian spends the majority of the conference saying very few words to anybody who is not Tia. Tia, who'd warned the company employees prior to the conference, spends her time making sure that Adrian is well enough to take care of his responsibilities. Every few minutes, he checks his phone to make sure nothing bad had occurred with his boyfriend. When the end of the conference approaches, and he has yet to receive any calls about Luna, he bouncing around, nervously.
"Adrian, why don't you just call the hospital to check up on him?" Tia sighs as she watches Adrian fiddle around with his hands.
"I told him I wouldn't worry," he frowns. "I'll just go see him when I leave. There's only–" he glances at his watch. "Five more minutes, anyway."
"Stop stressing yourself out, then. If something was wrong, the hospital would've called. Luna is fine."
He groans and places his hands over his face. "I'm sorry, Tia."
"For what?" she raises an eyebrow.
"I haven't been doing what I need to as a CEO recently. I'm sorry for forcing all of my responsibilities on you."
"You have got to stop blaming yourself for everything," Tia chuckles. "Everybody goes through things— mentally, and physically. It's okay for you to be a human being for once."
"Thanks, Tia," Adrian gives her a small smile. "You're my best friend."
Her eyes widen as she lets out a gasp. "I'm being promoted to Best Friend?!"
With a laugh, Adrian rolls his eyes. "Ah, shut up. As if you couldn't already tell..."
As if it was painted on, a grin makes its way onto her face. "...you're my best friend too."
Adrian checks his watch. "Okay, it's time for me to pick up Luna. I'll see you tomorrow?"
"Yes sir. Bye, bestie!"
"Goodbye, Tia," he chuckles and exits the building.
