Chapter 23
**TW: Drugs**
Luna
"Don't you get tired of this, babe?" I frown, looking down at the papers in front of me. Adrian glances up from his computer with a smile.
"Come here," he motions me towards him. I scoot my chair over to his side of the desk, placing myself next to him. "Of course I get tired of it but I know–"
"If you're about to give an inspirational speech like you're a superhero, please spare me," I give him a blank stare.
"Fine then," he rolls his eyes. I look at his computer where a travel website is pulled up.
"Ooh! Where are you trying to go?" I ask, placing my feet in his lap.
"I was thinking that maybe we should go on a trip for our anniversary. A full vacation. Just me and you," he grins.
I peck his lips with a giggle. "Sounds lovely. Where are we going?"
"I was thinking somewhere tropical but it's up to you."
"Ooh! Can we go to Maldives? Or Bali? Or Seychelles?"
"Let's go to all three."
"All three?!" I exclaim, my eyes widening.
"Let's start in Bali, then go to Maldives, then to Seychelles."
"Babe, are you sure?"
"Yeah! It's our first anniversary together. Let's make it special."
"I'm excited!" I let out another giggle. Adrian smiles at me, gently massaging my feet. "Are you gonna massage my feet for the whole trip, too?"
"If you want me to," he shrugs. "I have no problem with that."
"I was kidding, Sweetheart, but thank you," I remove my feet and place my body on his lap, wrapping my arms around his neck. "Don't you ever get more work done in here?"
"I do but you're distracting me so I can't right now."
"Well, when you said you were working from home, I thought you wanted to spend some extra time with me."
"I was just too tired to go into the office," he chuckles, placing his hand on my hip, rubbing soft circles on the skin with his thumb. "But spending the day with you is great, too."
"Mhm," I smirk as we hear the doorbell ring. "I'll go get that!" I exit the office and head down the hallway, toward the door. I swing it open to reveal Dakota. "Hi, Dakota."
"Hi, Luna," she gives me a small smile. "Is my brother here?"
"Yeah, he's in his office."
"Thanks," she tells me and walks down the hallway.
I head into the living room where Riot sleeps near the couch. "I guess it's just me and you now, baby boy," I grab him into my arms and plop down on the couch. We sit, watching movies for a few hours before I finally hear Adrian's office door open up. Adrian and Dakota enter the living room, both of them carrying odd looks on their faces. Adrian's hair was now messy, as if he'd been running his fingers through it. He lightly nibbles on his bottom lip, something he does only when he's upset or stressed out. Dakota, on the other hand, is a complete mess. Her watery eyes, and red nose insinuate that she'd been crying. "You guys okay?"
"We're fine," Adrian clears his throat. "We have lunch plans with our mother. I'll see you when I come back?"
"Of course, honey," I tell him as he leans down to me. I cup his face with my hands and gently press my lips to his. "I love you."
"I love you too, baby," he walks out of the door.
I look down at Riot. "Now it's really just me and you," I giggle.
Adrian
"Adrian I really do not want to do this," Dakota sighs as I park the car outside of the restaurant. "I haven't seen her in almost eight months..."
"I know, 'Kota and neither have I but let's at least give her a chance, alright?" I sigh.
"Just because she's sick?"
"Dakota, this could be the last few times that we could spend with her. We don't have to be one big happy family but let's at least try to make peace with her, okay?"
"Fine," she groans and opens the door. We head into the restaurant and grab a table near the back, waiting for our mother. We order drinks and make small talk as we wait. It doesn't take long before I spot my mother walking into the restaurant. She'd obviously gotten a bit thinner than the last time I'd seen her, however, she looked better than she did in the past. Her usually pale skin was now a bit tanned and her dark brown is tied up in a loose ponytail that accentuates her sharp jawline and high cheekbones.
She gives Dakota and I a small smile before taking a seat across from us. "Hi, guys."
"Hi, mom," I wave. Dakota stares down into her lap, taking a deep breath before glancing at our mother and waving. "So...you wanted to meet with us to talk?"
"Yeah," she nods. "I feel like I need to apologize to you guys in person and try my best to clear everything up," she begins. "I've messed up really bad in the past and I just want to build a relationship with my kids."
"Why did you do the things that you did?" Dakota questions, cutting straight to the point.
"Sheesh..." Mom sighs. "I didn't expect to get into this so soon..." she whispers to herself before looking up at Dakota and I. "Honestly...drugs."
"Drugs?"
"Listen, I had you guys when I was 17," she starts. "Your father left to the military almost immediately after you were born, which left me alone raising two kids as a teenager."
"What about your parents?"
"They kicked me out once they found out I was pregnant. I was alone and stressed out so I wanted something to calm me down so I could be a better mother. Things obviously didn't turn out the way I expected..." she plays with her fingers. "Drugs controlled my mind and caused my behavior to spiral out of control."
"So how do we know that you've changed?"
"Well, about eight months ago, I started a four-month rehabilitation program and therapy. I've been clean ever since and trying to change my life around."
"Why would Dad leave you alone with twins?" Dakota whispers, staring down into her lap. I gently grab her hand under the table and give it a squeeze. "Did he not want to deal with us or something?"
"No! Of course, not," Mom tells her. "It was always his dream to go to the military and I didn't want to hold him back from following his dreams. He would've stayed if I told him to."
"So you've been on drugs this whole time?"
My mother nods and takes a sip of her drink. "It was the worst mistake I've ever made in my life but I know that's not an excuse for the way that I've treated you. I just really hope you guys can somehow find a way to at least give me a chance?"
"I don't know, Mom..." Dakota sighs. "This is a lot to take in."
"You don't have to make your decision right now. I just wanted you to hear me out."
"We're willing to give you a chance," I tell her with a smile.
"Adrian!" Dakota smacks my shoulder. "We can't just forgive her that easily!"
"You know I hate holding grudges!"
"Then learn to un-hate it!"
"I can't do that! I'm a nice person! Be like me!"
"Fine," Dakota groans and looks at mom. "We'll try to give you a chance. But don't mess it up."
"Really?" Mom's eyes begin to water. "You guys are gonna give me a chance?"
"It's gonna be hard but we'll try."
"Thank you so much," she sighs, wiping the tears from her eyes. "So...tell me about how you've been."
***
"So you finally have a boyfriend?" Mom asks, taking a bite from her salad.
"Yep!" I nod my head with excitement. "His name is Luna."
"And is his face as pretty as his name?"
"Even prettier," Dakota chuckles. "Luna's gorgeous. He's perfect for Adrian."
"Okay, okay, stop..." I gush, looking down at my plate.
"Aw, the little baby is blushing!" Dakota pinches my cheeks. "You're in love!"
"Shut up, Dakota!" I smack her hand away from me. "Anyway, yes, I have a boyfriend. We've been together for a little over ten months and he lives with me."
"Do you think he's the one?" Mom raises an eyebrow at me, a small smile playing at her lips.
"Honestly..." I start. "I do. I think I'm gonna be with him for the rest of my life."
"Well, he sounds amazing. Hopefully, I'll get to meet him someday."
"Of course you will," I smile. We make a few more minutes a small talk before requesting the check and each paying for our own meals. Dakota and I wish our mother a goodbye and head back to my car. It doesn't take long before we're pulling into my driveway and saying goodbye to each other. I go into the house and spend the rest of the day cuddling Luna and Riot.
***
"Wake up, honey," I hear a soft whisper in my ear before feeling a wet sensation on my cheek. I let out a groan before slowly opening my eyes. Luna straddles my waist, holding Riot with a bright smile on his face. "Say 'happy birthday, daddy'!" he places Riot close to my face, allowing him to place multiple puppy kisses all over my face.
"Okay! Okay!" I let out a soft laugh. "Thank you, Riot," I take him out of Luna's hands and place him on the ground, next to the bed.
Luna bends down to me and softly connects his lips to mine. "Happy birthday, baby," he mumbles into the kiss.
I place my hands on his waist, letting them fall down to his ass. "Mm...is this my present?" I break the kiss with a smirk.
"No, you nasty!" Luna laughs and lifts himself up. He grabs a tray full of food from the bedside table and places it in my lap. "I made you breakfast."
"Oh! Thank you!" I smile and sit up so my back leans against the headboard. Luna climbs off of me and rests back into his usual spot in the bed. "Did you eat something?" I ask, taking a bite of the strawberry pancakes he'd prepared on the tray.
"I had an apple."
"An apple? Baby you need to eat."
"I'm fine, Adrian. This is for you," he gently kisses my cheek.
I take my time finishing my meal as Luna and I make small talk, laughing and occasionally giving each other small kisses. Before long, I am finished with my breakfast and place the tray on the bedside table. Luna and I both make our way to the bathroom where we take a short, shared shower and dress ourselves in casual outfits. "Ooh babe, you're wearing my favorite outfit," I say when Luna exits the closet wearing an over sized blue and white striped button up that hangs off of his shoulders along with a pair of light washed ripped skinny jeans and a pair of white sneakers. A small silver necklace hangs around his neck, accentuating his smooth skin, along with an abundance of silver rings on his fingers.
"Oh, I didn't know!" Luna giggles, looking down at his outfit before looking at mine. We make our way downstairs and into the car. Luna, unfortunately, climbs into the drivers seat, causing me to fear for my life. After a long ride of fearful, life-threatening driving from my boyfriend, we arrive outside of a small white building. "Come on! I have a surprise for you!" he exclaims, pulling me inside of the building. We walk up to the front desk where a short man looks at us with a smile. "We have an appointment under the name 'Luna Petit'."
"Uh...yep! Right here!" The man says, looking at his computer. "You can just hop on the elevator and head up to the fourth floor. Everything should be ready when you arrive and here are your suits," he hands a bundle of white cloth to Luna.
"Okay, thank you!" Luna pulls me into the elevator and pushes the buttons before smiling, evilly.
"Are you planning to murder me? What are we about to do?"
"You'll see," he smirks. Soon enough, the elevator stops and opens up, revealing a small rooftop completely painted white. Near the far corner of the area is a cart with buckets of paints and paint brushes. "Surprise!"
"Are we painting?" I question, a small smile forming on my face.
Luna nods and grabs my hand, leading me over to the cart of paint. "We have this whole area to create whatever we want and they paint it white again afterward."
"Aw, babe! That's so creative!" I smile, pulling him into a hug. "Thank you."
"You like it?"
"I love it!"
"Oh, thank God! I spent so much time planning this.."
"You didn't have to do all of this for me..."
"Well, of course I did. You do a lot for me. This is the least I could do."
"Thank you, baby," I lean down and peck his lips.
"No problem," he smiles before handing me one of the white suits. "Wear this so you don't mess up your clothes."
I quickly put the white suit on over my clothes and look over at Luna who struggles to roll his sleeves up on the suit that almost twice his size. "Need help?"
Luna sighs and looks up at me with a nod. "I'm too little," he pouts. I chuckle and help him cuff his sleeves as he drowns in the white cloth covering his body. "You look stupid."
I raise an eyebrow. "Oh really? I look stupid? And how do you look?"
"Well I'm always cute so I assume I just look how I normally do...cute."
I glare at him. "...I hate that you're right!"
He places a kiss on my cheek before grabbing a large paint brush and dunking it into a container of yellow paint. "Come on!" he exclaims as he begins to paint random things on the ground. I grab one of the smaller paint brushes and dip it into purple paint before beginning to paint in my own corner of the area. We make small talk as we continue to paint random things on the ground and half-walls around us. It isn't long before I hear Luna calling to me. "Babe! Come here! Look what I made!" he calls. I make my way over to him to see that he'd made—what looks like— a sunflower. "I'm a real artist now!"
"Wow, look at you, Picasso," I chuckle.
Luna frowns his nose up. "I don't wanna be Picasso. Can I be somebody cuter?"
"Van Gogh?"
"Ew."
"Da Vinci?"
"No thanks."
"Frida Kahlo?"
"Is that the girl with the unibrow?" he asks. I nod my head. "Ooh! Yeah I wanna be her!"
"Okay, LuFrida KahlPetit."
"You suck at names!" he giggles. "Now go work on your piece, poophead!" he tries his best to push me away. "I have a masterpiece to finish."
"Alright, alright, I'm going," I laugh, making my way back over to my area. I pick up my paintbrush and begin to lay down more layers of paint. "You know, I missed seeing you like this."
"Like what?" Luna questions, painting colorful circles on the ground.
"All bubbly and excited," I answer. "This is how you were when we first met."
"Oh...I guess I just thought that I haven't had much to be super happy about," Luna tells me with a small smile. "But now that I'm thinking about it, I have a lot to be happy about and I should be more grateful for that."
With a grin, I jog over to him and lift him into my arms, gently placing kisses all over his face, causing him to giggle. "I. Love. You. So. Much," I tell him in between kisses.
"I love you too!" he squeals, trying to escape my kisses. "Now let me be!"
I place one last sloppy kiss on his cheek before heading back towards my area. "Okay, I'm done," I laugh as I see him wiping away my saliva with a frown.
***
"That was the most fun thing I think I've done since I was a child," I tell Luna as we climb into the car after a long day of painting.
"Yeah, it was a lot of fun!" Luna grins and begins to drive. "Are you hungry?"
"Starving."
"Okay, great," he says. It isn't long before we pull up to a Taco Bell. "I was gonna take you somewhere super fancy and uptight but I figured you would like this better."
"Wow...you know me so well. Race you to the door?" I raise an eyebrow.
"Catch me if you can!" Luna squeaks and takes off toward the door. I follow closely behind, grabbing him into my arms before he can reach the door. "Cheater!"
"Can't cheat if there are no rules," I stick my tongue out and enter the restaurant. I stare at the menu for a while before looking Luna who stands with a pout on his face. "Do you know what you want?"
"A rematch."
"Food-wise, Love."
"Oh!" His face brightens up as he stares at the menu. "A crunch wrap supreme, please!"
"Ooh! Good choice," I say. We quickly order and make our way to a table in the back with our food. "Wow, breakfast in bed, painting, and Taco Bell? You're really making this the best birthday I've ever had."
"Really?" Luna asks, taking a bite of his food.
"Yeah. I haven't celebrated my birthday since I was fourteen."
"What? Why?"
"Because that's when I graduated high school so I was always to busy with college to celebrate my birthday after that. I just let Dakota be the star of the day."
"Well that's not fun," Luna frowns.
"No, but I didn't mind it," I chuckle. "I don't like making a big deal out my birthday."
"Well, now that you're with me, you should get used to making a big deal out of your birthday."
"Yeah?" I raise an eyebrow at him. He nods and shoots me a loving smile. Soon enough, we're finished with our food and heading home. When we get inside of the house, I plop down on the couch and groan as Riot plops down next to me. "It's been long day, buddy," I tell him, gently rubbing his belly.
"Happy birthday to you," Luna sings as he exits the kitchen holding small Pikachu cake with a burning candle on it. He gently sits in my lap, holding the cake. I close my eyes and make a wish before blowing the candle out. "Yay!"
"How did you know I like Pokémon?"
"Your dad told me that you were really into it as a kid," he tells me and hands me a fork. "It's just you and me so there's no need to cut it."
"This is really cute," I take a good look at the cake.
"Thank you. I woke up at 3 am for this cake."
"Baby, you didn't have to do that for me."
"Stop, you're worth losing a few hours of sleep," he assures me. "Oh! I need to go get your present!" he hops out of my lap and runs upstairs to our bedroom. It isn't long before he returns with a black bag in his hand. As he gives it to me, he retakes his spot in my lap. I gently open the bag and pull out a small black box.
"Babe..." I smile as I open the box, revealing a diamond encrusted silver watch.
"I hope you like it. I tried my best."
"I love it, baby," I softly press my lips to his. "Thank you for making this the best birthday I've ever had."
"Stop...you're gonna make me cry..." he whispers, wrapping his arms around my neck. "I love you so so so so much."
"I love you so so so so much more," I shoot him a smile and peck his lips once more.
"Okay, that's not tr– Riot!" he scowls as Riot eats the cake that was sitting on the coffee table causing me to laugh.
