Juliet is broken. She is closed off and quiet, guarding her heart with thick walls so it wouldn't get broken the same way it did when her father first hurt her. She learned to speak only when she was addressed, despite her powerful position. She never smiles. She never laughs. Except around her best friend. She is always tired. She is always wearing long dresses with long sleeves to hide what lies beneath. She hardly eats. She doesn't trust anyone but her best friend, and gaining her trust won't be easy.

One of the things she inherited from her father was his strong mind. She is smarter than anyone gives her credit for, but she remains silent in fear of just causing herself more pain. Not all would think beauty is a strength, but this is one trait he has recognized, and has used to get things he wants. All her beauty is to her is more pain. Where to begin? Juliet is physically weak. Hardly eating has taken a toll on her body, but she still has enough curves for her father to use them to his advantage. She has no confidence in herself. Juliet is relieved as well as terrified. Relieved because her father won't hurt her when the Selected arrive. Fear because she thinks he will have handpicked them to make sure they are just like him: cruel and powerful. She won't trust any of the Selected when they first arrive; she is sure of that. She will be on guard.
