~Turn Back~
Steve looked at himself in the mirror as he put his suit on and he hardly recognized himself anymore. Who was this person? This person that was so harsh on the outside. So cold and to the point. This person that had scars on his thighs that he never talked about. He always knew he was weak, but that had been a whole new low. He needed to be away from this. All of this. If he continued this way, he would never be able to go back. He still had time now though. Time to live a little of that life Tony had mentioned. He just hoped Bucky would say yes.
As he walked out to the group, his eyes landed on that beautiful brown hair. God how he missed him. They never even got a proper reunion. The battle happened and then... and then the funeral. There was just no time. Everyone waited to see him off, but he needed to talk to Bucky alone first. He didn't want to do it in front of everyone.
"Hey, Buck?" Steve called.
Bucky turned around and smiled and Steve could nearly feel his heart melt. This was it. He had to ask now or never. "Can I talk to you over here?" Steve asked, pointing to the empty porch.
"Of course." Bucky said, following his lead up the three steps. They sat together on the porch swing, "what's this all about?"
Steve sucked in a shaky breath. Don't be a chicken, Rogers. This is Bucky you're talking to. When he met his eyes, there was no more hesitation. "Come with me. Please," he took his hand, "I know it's just supposed to be there and back but... I don't- I don't want to come back to all of this. I want to be with you. So I was thinking that we could go back to our little apartment in Brooklyn... Just after the war... We could be together. Undercover, of course (Darn 40s), but together."
Tears welled up in Bucky's eyes. "Y-you really think we could do that? We could get away like that?"
Steve smiled softly. "I know we can. What do you say?"
Bucky's answer came in the form of a bone crushing hug. "Yes! That's all I want Steve... I want to forget all of this and I want to be with you. Just like old times."
Steve hugged back just as tight, burying his face in Bucky's shirt and breathing in the familiar scent. The last five years had felt like an eternity of hell without him. He couldn't lose Bucky. Not again. This way, there was no risk. It would just be them. "Are you ready to go then?"
"I've never been more ready."
With a smile, Steve led Bucky to the group, telling them what their plan was. They weren't exactly happy about it, but they knew that was what they wanted. What they needed. So they supported them.
Bruce gave them two extra vials each. Just in case. They all knew why. Bucky was semi-stable. Not completely. T'Challa had been unable to repair all of the damage without causing more. Bucky had instances of seizures a few times back in Wakanda and the extra vials were for just in case they needed to take an emergency trip home for the medical attention that he wouldn't be able to receive in the 40s. Steve was relieved that they had that backup plan if needed. It made him feel a lot better about the whole thing.
Standing on the platform, Steve looked around at everyone he had laid his life down for. Everyone who had laid their lives down for him. He would never be able to thank them enough. They were his family when he didn't have any left. He would see them again though. He knew he would.
Steve gave his family a salute and held Bucky's hand. They braced themselves as Bruce counted down and within seconds, they were gone. Off to start their new lives.
