"Deep breath." Dr. Choi instructed.
Yoongi inhaled and then slowly exhaled. Dr. Choi removed his stethoscope and smiled, "Your lungs sound great! Chest x-ray is normal and so are your labs. I'm happy to say you've been promoted to a two month follow up instead of every four weeks."
"That sounds good. Thank you."
"Of course. I will get them to schedule your follow up."
"Thank you Dr. Choi."
Yoongi grabbed his car keys and started heading out. At the same time he was walking out, Taehyung was about to head in.
"Taehyung!" Yoongi screamed excitedly.
"Hey! I heard you had a follow up and I figured I'd stop by before starting my shift. How are you? You look really good."
"Thank you. I'm doing great. I've been promoted to two month follow ups."
"Sounds awesome. By the way, thank you for the tray of cookies you sent me and the card."
"Of course. You were my nurse for so long I figured I had to be nice at least once."
Taehyung chuckled, "I miss you."
"You do? Really?"
"Yeah. My new patient is so compliant and doesn't talk back. No fun."
"See, I knew I was keeping things interesting."
"You sure were. Well, I wish you the best. I have to get going before Chan starts freaking out. Take care Yoongi!
"Bye! Take care too!"
Once Taehyung left, Yoongi walked to the appointment window. He was handed his follow up. He folded it and shoved it in his pocket.
Luckily, he didn't have to walk far to his car. The building where he had his follow up was surprisingly close to the parking lot.
His phone started ringing as he was struggling to unlock his car. "Hello? Yes mom. I'm out of the appointment. I'm fine. I'll be back shortly."
Over the last few months, he'd learned to drive. Well, he already knew how to prior to that but being that he was in and out of hospitals he hadn't had the opportunity to keep practicing.
His mom was still having a hard time letting go, but she was getting better at it. Hoseok said the same thing happened with his parents and that it eventually got better.
Suddenly, he felt the hairs on the back of his neck stick up. He got a weird shiver down his spine so he turned his face and spotted a...clown?
"Mom. I—I'll be home shortly. Gotta go. I'm about to start driving. You always say safety first!"
Before his mom could argue, he hung the phone and looked at the clown a few feet away. He raised his eyebrows a little confused recognizing who was behind the costume.
"Jimin?"
"I thought you didn't recognize me." He said, stepping closer.
Yoongi chuckled, "Well you're not in full clown makeup so you're quite easy to recognize. The clown nose isn't much of a disguise. Why are you dressed like that? You hate clowns."
"I do. Yeah. Uhh, I volunteered to do it again. You know saying no to kids is hard."
"I see that." Yoongi grinned.
"I...I knew you had an appointment today and I figured we could talk. I mean the reason I know about your appointment is because you told me. I don't want you to think I'm stalking you or anything."
"I was not going to think that. I told you about my follow up and uhh...sure what do you want to talk about?"
Yoongi was surprisingly calm at this interaction. He figured it was because Jimin was dressed like a clown. It was less intimidating than when he was in his usual attire.
"Yoongi I—I've been meaning to tell you this for a while now." He started. Yoongi could see the sweat droplets building across his forehead.
The sun was shining bright causing them both to kind of squint unable to keep their eyes fully opened. It was very warm outside or maybe it felt that way because of the beating sun rays. There was little to no ventilation and when wind did hit them, it was hot. Mid April was starting to feel like an oven.
"Is something wrong?"
"Nothings wrong I just..." Jimin took a deep breath. He started fidgeting with his hands until he dug in his backpack that he had and pulled out balloons and a balloon blower.
He started blowing up balloons as Yoongi looked, still quite perplexed. He wondered if Jimin was feeling okay or if he was sweating too much under that thick costume and it was making him act this strange.
"Jimin, are you okay? Do you need water? Maybe we should go inside the building or the car. You're sweating profusely."
"I'm okay. I'm just trying to get this shit. Hold on. Almost done."
Yoongi scratched the side of his head leaning back on his car. He made sure to not touch it where his skin was exposed because it would probably burn him.
"Okay."
A few moments later, Jimin turned around and flashed his finished product. A yellow balloon heart. He was smiling proudly at his work while Yoongi just looked.
"That's nice. I see you've been practicing." He nervously replied trying to not overthink things.
"It's not precisely for practice. It's for you."
Yoongi's breath quickened as he reached over to take it. He held the balloon shaped heart in his clammy hands.
"This will look great next to that deflated giraffe you gave me." He chuckled nervously. "Why...why are you giving me this?
Jimin took a deep breath, "It's a symbol of the love I have for you."
"Oh." Yoongi's response was dry. His face was bright red. Jimin had the tendency to say things he didn't mean romantically and Yoongi had learned to not read into things too much.
"Yoongi I like you and I want—"
Yoongi immediately put his hand up as if he was trying to shield himself from Jimin. The blood left his face as his heart sped up. He stumbled a bit ending up having to hold onto his hot car for support.
"Are you kidding me? This is not funny Jimin. Just because you're being a clown does not mean you should play with my emotions. I don't have time for this." He turned his back on him and unlocked the door.
"Wait! Yoongi! Let me explain!" He shrieked, snatching the clown nose off his face. Now that he really thought about it, confessing in a full clown costume had been a bad idea.
"No. I have to get home." His hands were shaky and he pressed the button but his car wouldn't unlock. He could feel Jimin coming up behind him making him more nervous.
When he eventually managed to unlock it, he quickly closed the door before he could stop it. Within seconds, Jimin ran to the other side and Yoongi was distracted enough that Jimin had already gotten in his car.
"Please get out of the car. This is not funny." He repeated. His voice had lost the sternness behind it. His voice sounded frail now. Wounded.
A rush of emotions fell over Yoongi making him feel like he was back to square one. He felt the same sadness and despair he had that Christmas Eve all the way up until his birthday.
He had managed to deal with his heartache, managed to love Jimin without feeling pain about it but to have him say this brought back so many emotions he thought he was over.
"Yoongi, please let me explain." Jimin whispered. He could see the look on Yoongi and how his smile had faded and he was the culprit of that.
"Just let me tell you this and if you don't ever want to see me afterwards, I will understand. I will keep my distance but please let me—let me explain."
Yoongi looked at the yellow heart shaped balloon in his hands. Jimin reached over to put his hand over his paler one, and only then he noticed that he was still shaking.
"I'm so sorry Yoongi. I'm sorry for hurting you. You didn't deserve that. You didn't deserve to suffer the way you did because of my indecisiveness. I—I've been meaning to tell you that it's always been you. I should've picked you all along. I'm sorry it took me so long to see it, but that day on Christmas Eve I realized that my feelings for you aren't temporary. They're real and I've felt this way for a long time."
Yoongi's gaze slowly looked up at Jimin. His eyes wide with astonishment. He dug his fingers into his palms waiting to wake up from his cruel dream, but it wasn't one. Jimin was here in flesh and bones telling him this.
"How do I know this is for real and that you're still not confused?" Yoongi asked quietly.
"I tried to have that date with Chanyeol. I tried to enjoy every second of it, but I couldn't. You were in the back of my mind the whole time. I broke things off completely that following Monday after class. I haven't talked to him since then. Not outside of class. I was so infatuated with getting a date with him that I was too blind to see that I've been falling for you ever since the day I met you. I wanted to tell you as soon as I realized but I wanted to give you space. To give you time to heal. To give you time to think things and I—I want us to...I would like for us to try dating for real. We did everything backwards. We dated before we even knew each other. Then we became friends and broke up after. I want to do things the right way, but if you do not want this—if I'm too late and you never want to see me again I understand. I put you through so much that I wouldn't blame you if you didn't want to try."
Yoongi kept quiet for minutes. His body was still in shock at Jimin's confession. His heart rate stayed over a hundred beats per minute. Once again, he clawed his palm until it stung.
This was not a dream.
He kept telling himself that over and over, but it was truly hard to believe. This man, this man that looked like he was straight out of a movie scene was confessing to him.
"You like me?" He finally asked after a long silence.
Jimin sighed and chuckled nervously as he closed his eyes briefly. "Yes. Very much."
Yoongi's face turned a brighter red. He wasn't used to being confessed to and to love in general. He especially didn't think he'd get to this with Jimin and as much as he wanted to jump in his arms and accept his offer, he felt fear.
"What if Chanyeol tries again? What if one day you wake up and you realize that he's who you've wanted all along?" His voice was very tight trying to hide his emotional tears building up.
Jimin gripped his hand tighter, "Oh Yoongi. I've hurt you so much to the point that you fear I will leave you again. I was such a coward to walk away that day. I should've told you how I felt then instead of trying to fool myself. Believe me, I don't want Chanyeol. I want you and if you allow it, I will spend my days proving to you that you're my one and only."
Yoongi gulped the load of anxiety building up his throat. He was afraid that if he blinked he'd wake up from this dream and it'll all be over.
"So Yoongi? What do you say?" Jimin asked after a long pause. He was starting to sweat under his clown costume.
He figured it was because it was hot and they were both in his car without the AC on. He didn't care though. He wanted to do whatever it took to be with Yoongi.
"I say you need a better love confession than dressed like a clown." Yoongi responded shortly after.
Jimin stared at him unsure where this was leading to, but then Yoongi laughed a little and so did he.
"Fuck. It's hot in here." He murmured, finally turning in his car. He adjusted vents so the cool air would hit them.
They both enjoyed the feeling before Jimin turned his attention back to him. Yoongi met eyes with him and nodded, "I would love to give us a try. I've never believed in fate but I know we were meant to be in each other's life in some way or another."
Jimin sighed relieved. He immediately leaned over but quickly stopped himself, "Is it okay if I—?" His sentence was interrupted by Yoongi crashing his lips on his.
They kissed until they ran out of air. Being apart from each other for months had taken a toll on them both. When they finally pulled away breathless and with blushed cheeks, Jimin wrapped his arms around his neck.
He held him close and tight. Afraid of letting him go. Yoongi returned the embrace and laid his head against his shoulder.
At last he felt at home.
