29.

Taehyung watched as Jungkook ate his sandwich in peace while he hummed. The weather outside was nice.

The late August air was not as hot or humid. They hadn't had time to hang outside of work because of their hectic shifts.

So they took the opportunity to eat lunch together now that their times finally collided. It was only fifteen minutes because one of them had to return since they were extremely short staffed at the moment.

Although he did enjoy time with Jungkook, he had been a little relieved that he didn't have to spend too much time alone with him.

He couldn't stop thinking of his ex while being with Jungkook and it made him extremely guilty. He felt like a terrible person for this because Jungkook was a literal angel and he was betraying him with his thoughts.

"You're not hungry? You haven't touched your sandwich." Jungkook pointed out.

His sweet voice brought him back to reality. Though he knew he was acting distant towards him, Jungkook did not change the way he was.

In fact, he was acting normal like nothing happened but Taehyung knew he could tell his indifference and that he was avoiding bringing it up.

Every time Jungkook would lean in he'd find an excuse to lean back. When he would try to hold his hand he'd quickly let go trying to change the focus.

Yet, Jungkook did not say a word.

Jungkook endured his cold shoulder without losing that sweet smile on his face. He never asked why or made him feel guilty about it.

Taehyung's heart felt heavy thinking of what Jungkook was imagining. Could he sense that their summer romance was coming to an end?

"I'm not hungry." He admitted.

"Did you have breakfast?"

"Yes I did."

"Oh. Try to not wait too long to eat. It can give you a headache or hurt your stomach."

"Thank you."

"For what?" He asked with a chuckle.

"For caring about me."

Jungkook grinned, "Of course. How can I not?"

Taehyung smiled sadly. He would be the cause of Jungkook's smile being taken away. It was his stupid fault for not being able to let go of his past.

Why did he have to be fucking late that day to work? Why did he have to forget his damn work badge? Why did she have to be there?

If he hadn't seen her, he wouldn't have had those emotions again. He would still look at Jungkook and feel his heart speed.

He'd still look at Jungkook and be excited to effortlessly fall for him. But now things were different and neither of them could turn back time.

"Jungkook, I like you."

"I like you too." He smiled excitedly.

The silence that followed behind slowly settled with Jungkook and that's when he realized this wasn't a love confession.

It was a goodbye.

"You like me but what?" His words were quiet, almost like he was too afraid to ask.

Taehyung briefly looked down at his hands and then got the courage to look back at him. He needed to be honest and not be a coward.

"But I still have feelings for my ex. I saw her recently and I realized that I haven't forgotten her. I can't keep leading you on making you think this could lead to something long term because I don't think it will."

Jungkook released a shaky breath. He didn't realize he was gripping his half eaten sandwich until he felt the bread crumple in his hand.

"I just want you to find your happiness." Taehyung added.

Jungkook laughed a little at his own pain. For days he had been trying to fool himself. He told himself Taehyung was just busy with work. Stressed with starting school. Tired of fighting with Yoongi.

He told himself everything to not think it was about him. Except this was about him. Taehyung was acting that way because he himself was the problem.

"I wanted to find my happiness with you." Jungkook whispered while looking into his eyes.

Jungkook always thought that Taehyung had the most beautiful dark brown eyes he'd ever seen. He could get lost in their beauty.

Now that he actually focused on them, he noticed how tired he looked. They looked dimmed, his under eyes were noticeable and something told him it wasn't the heavy work shifts.

It was guilt. Guilt for breaking his heart. That hurt Jungkook far worse than this breakup. He couldn't bear the image of Taehyung feeling this way because he wanted to spare his feelings.

"I know you won't find that with me." Taehyung said through the lump in his throat.

Jungkook swallowed down the heavy load of emotions. They hadn't even dated and they had only been officially talking for a few months but it still hurt.

It hurt because he had fallen so hard for him and it was a blow to the chest to realize Taehyung hadn't fallen for him at all.

Everything had been an illusion. A fantasy that was worth reliving but wouldn't go longer than it did.

He wanted to say so many things but he couldn't physically speak. He felt a million things at once and it was hard to stop his racing thoughts.

All of the sudden, his pager started going off. He got up abruptly and looked at him one more time. "It's Hoseok. I have to go."

As he sprinted away from the man he so easily adored, his chest felt heavier. Taehyung was left behind with a heavy heart himself.

How sad to know they would never be enough.

"So we broke up." Yoongi said through the camera.

Hoseok's eyes widened and then the familiar concern painted his face. "I'm sorry to hear that. How are you?"

"Oh I'm good. I really am."

"Did you cry?"

"What? Fuck no." Yoongi said with a laugh.

Hoseok raised his eyebrows, "You cry at animated movies."

"The Lion King is so fucking sad okay?"

"Okay yeah." He admitted with a shy smile. "I'm sorry about the breakup. I really am."

Yoongi sighed with a shrug, "It's okay. Jimin is too good for me anyways."

"No way. You're worthy of him! If Chanyeol weren't in the picture then things would be different."

"Yeah if he weren't but he is. He's very present and I can't compete with him. I mean he's healthy, he's strong, he's beautiful. I'm just..."

"You're sick but hot as fuck and you're a virgin which gives you extra points!" Hoseok beamed.

Yoongi scowled, "Ahh. That's not necessarily a good thing, Hoseok. Who wants a virgin man huh? Who wants to deflower a sick man with a portable oxygen tank? Who wants to take one for the team?"

"Well, I would personally take one for the team if being near you didn't kill us both."

Yoongi broke into laughter forgetting his heartache for a split second. "From the looks of it, we're going to have to end up doing it. I don't see my chances of ever getting laid."

Hoseok dramatically put his hand over his heart, "I shall make honor of fucking the virgin out of you even six feet away! With new dildos and technology we could make it work for sure."

Yoongi bawled his first with triumph. "Yes! Not dying a virgin!"

"Of course not. Over my dead corpse."

They both started laughing again at the irony of their conversation. They were technically walking corpses. Yoongi started coughing midway, alarming Hoseok.

"Hey you should get that cough checked out. It doesn't sound too good."

"It's just from laughing so hard." Yoongi responded in between laughter.

Their good time was interrupted by Jungkook bursting through the door. Yoongi could only imagine that Thai had to be urgent. Nurses didn't burst through doors without knocking first.

"Hoseok we have a donor."

Hoseok was so surprised that he dropped the phone. Yoongi's eyes widened as leaned in closer to his phone like that meant he'd be able to see what was going on.

"What?"

"Yes! It fits your chest cavity, it's a young donor so the chances of you rejecting it are slim. It's a perfect match!"

"Oh my fuck! Oh. Yoongi shit, I—I'm sorry I have—"

"Are you kidding me? Go on! You need to prepare for this! I'm so very happy for you! Go!"

"Thanks! Bye. I—I'll talk to you soon!"

As soon as Hoseok hung up the phone he started hyperventilating. Jungkook put his hand on his shoulders.

"Hey it's okay to be nervous. You're going to do fine. Everything will be okay." He reassured him with a smile.

"My parents—I need to call—"

"I already did. I figured it would be a lot of anxiety if you told them. They're on the way."

"Okay uhh...I should probably shower. I—uhhh I need you to keep an eye on my plant just in case it needs water. Recovery is long and—"

"I've got it. Don't worry." Jungkook cooed looking him in the eye.

In that instant, Hoseok's heart leaped. What if this was the last time he saw Jungkook? What if he didn't wake up and he died never confessing his true feelings?

"I'm going to put some lab orders in and other studies the doctor ordered. They'll come get you shortly—"

"Jungkook, I think I'm in love with you." He blurted out of panic.

The gasp that escaped Jungkook's lips was loud. He dropped the papers that were in his hands and he slowly looked at Hoseok unsure if he'd heard right.

"Excuse me?"

"I don't know if this is love but every time I see you my heart skips a beat. Every time I hear you laugh it makes me all fuzzy inside. I needed you to hear this because if I don't wake up I want you to know."

Jungkook swallowed the lump on his throat. He just got heartbroken by Taehyung and looking at Hoseok right now he looked broken himself.

The last thing he wanted was to make his heartache worse. He picked up the papers and set them down on the table as he walked up to him.

"You are going to wake up and you are going to get better. I'll be waiting for you so we can have this conversation, yeah?"

"Yeah." Hoseok whispered. He was petrified of surgical rooms. Getting put to sleep and not knowing if that would be the last time was petrifying.

But his fear suddenly diminished once he felt Jungkook's arms wrapped around him. "You will be okay. Everything will be okay and I will be with you when you wake up."

Hoseok hugged him back resting his face on his shoulder. He felt at peace here in his arms and for a brief moment he forgot all his fears.

While this was happening, Yoongi was in the room beside them pacing around. He was so nervous for his friend. He kept imagining what Hoseok must be feeling right now.

Would he feel this way if his lung transplant ever happened?

He grabbed his phone and stared at his contact list which was fairly short. As he clicked on Jimin's contact name he held his breath.

He put it on speaker and stepped away scared that it would go to voicemail. They were broken up after all.

They had kept communication after the awkward incident and things seemed unchanged except for Yoongi everything had changed. It felt like another barrier was put between them.

"Hello?" A panting Jimin replied.

Yoongi raised his eyebrows taking two steps closer. "Hello?" Jimin repeated through a deep breath.

Why did he sound so breathless?

"H—hey. Hey Jimin."

"Hi Yoongi. What's going on?"

The panting and deep breaths were playing sick tricks in his mind. Was he with Chanyeol? Was he naked in bed next to him? Or was he pleasing himself?

"Uhh...I...are you okay? Am I interrupting?"

"Oh no. Fuck, sorry. I was just...mmm. Cramp."

Yoongi's breathing was now getting out of control. This was the type of shit he listened to to get off while picturing he was with Jimin.

However, this was Jimin! Jimin was moaning and panting and it was all too much for Yoongi. Did he want him to bust in his pants right then and there?

"Jimin...what....what are you doing?" On the last word his voice cracked exposing his clear virgin hormones.

"I'm sorry I sound winded. I was actually running."

"Oh. Okay. Okay." He breathed relieved. He hoped hearing the truth would make his weird boner go away but it was hard to forget those sinful noises coming from Jimin.

"Are you okay? Now you're the one that sounds winded."

"Yeah! I'm fine. I was thinking of...stuff. You know what I'm getting side tracked. The reason I called is because Hoseok is getting a transplant!"

"Woah! That's great news!"

"Yeah! I'm excited for him!"

"That's good news Yoongi. I can't wait until you get yours."

"Yeah! Me either. When I get it we can do so many things together. We can even run if you want to."

His excitement was evident and Jimin was smiling the whole time hearing his happy voice. "Of course. We're going to do a lot together."

"Yeah! I vote that we—"

"Jimin! Are you ready?"

A voice in the background interrupted Yoongi. He stopped pacing around trying to hear the voice once again.

"No! Hold on, be right there. My bad, you were saying?"

"Oh nothing. It's not important. I should let you go so you can keep running."

"No, no, go ahead."

Yoongi's mind went blank. He was trying to think of that voice. He wished he wouldn't have been so careless and paid closer attention. Was it Chanyeol?

"I honestly forgot." Yoongi chuckled. "Keep running and we can talk later."

"Okay. We will catch up in a bit. Bye Yoongi!"

"Bye Jimin."

He kept the phone close to his ear waiting to hear his voice but he had already hung up. After a few seconds he finally put his phone down.

He laid in bed staring up at the ceiling. Then he remembered Hoseok and started smiling again until his brain caught up with his heart.

The tightness in his chest and uneasiness in his stomach was unmistakable. It was the same emotion he got every time he thought of Chanyeol and Jimin being together.

He truly was very happy for his friend getting a transplant, so why was he suddenly so blue thinking of it?
