The Meadow

My camera shutters as it captures the sun falling sleepily behind the meadow filled with wildflowers. Every frame telling a story of the dying day. I found myself mesmerized by the radiant colors the sun made, mixed in with the vibrant ones of the swaying flowers.

I loved this place, it felt so peaceful, so calm with a sense of magic dancing along its beauty. After a while I rested my head near some daisies, breathing in their sweet smell as I looked to the starry sky above. Beautiful blues, purples and the faintest of orange painted the night.

Captivated once more, I brought my camera to my eye, hoping to capture the picture above. So I could share it one day with the world, or keep it for my own. Again my camera makes the light shuttering noise but the sound that followed disturbed the peaceful evening.

Sitting up from my bed of flowers, I scanned the field. What could have made that noise? There near the tree line, stood a tall figure. By the build it appeared to be a man. I could just make out the muscles on his arms. And the tone of his shoulders. He seemed to fit well with the beauty of everything around him.

Slowly I lifted my camera once more hoping to capture the mysterious man in this moment. But when I looked through my lens, he had vanished. Quickly I lowered my camera looking back where he had stood.

He was still there... my heart rate quickened. Every fiber of my being said run. But when he turned and his eyes met mine, I was frozen in place. Stunned by his ethereal beauty. He seemed to glide across the flowers, they parted for him in such a way that they seemed to come to life.

What was happening?

Why can't I...

He was mere feet away from me, his iridescent skin shining in the moonlight. His expression was that of wonder.

"Who are you?" His voice was soft and sweet as he spoke. The way his messy brown hair fell in his face covering his eyes, that pierced through my heart.

I couldn't remember my name. Matter of fact I couldn't form words when he smiled at me with a smile much like a bunny.

"You don't belong here with your contraption that disturbs the peace."

That made me upset. I didn't need his permission to be here. I come here almost everyday. I've never seen this bunny man in my life. With his stupid well sculpted muscles, his adorable nose, and his mess dark brown hair. I think I would remember that. So maybe he should leave!

"I was here first." I stated matter of factly.

He rolled his eyes at me, crossing his arms across his bare chest.

"I live here. So how could you be here first?"

"I've never seen you before."

"I have been here."

"No you haven't."

His eyes flashed with something of annoyance as he stepped closer to me.

"Just because your eyes have not seen me until today. Does not mean I haven't been here." His tone was almost a growl. What was his deal?

"Whatever."

"Leave!" He barked. Tears stung the corners of my eyes. There was no reason for his rudeness. I love this place and every creature in it. How could he be so cold.

Swiftly I got to my feet and darted towards the woods. I ran until my lungs gave out, falling onto the stairs to my parents log cabin. I could smell the Brunswick stew cooking and the sweet smell of cornbread baking.

Instead of it being a welcoming smell, I gagged and puked all over the petunias beside the porch.

"You okay sweetheart?" My mom called to me from the kitchen window. I just grunted, holding my stomach and slowly making my way to my room.

"Y/N?"

I closed my door just as the tears began to fall harder. Throwing myself onto my bed, burying my face in my pillows.

The door to my room creaked open.

"What happened?"

"Nothing..." I grumbled into my pillows.

"Well... if you want to talk, dinner is in five minutes."

"Thanks mom..." I sniffled. A moment later I heard the door close, so I was left in silence.

Why?

That's all my brain would ask. I didn't have an answer. I knew I didn't do anything wrong and yet... I was banished from the meadow in an instant.

Tick...

Tick...

I sat up staring into the emerald green eyes of a Snow White cat. It seemed to want inside, however it looked so very grumpy. That was until it pouted. Can cats pout? I shrugged, moving to open my window. Once the window was open it jumped down, sauntering towards my bed where it transformed into a boy. He was slender in build with catlike features. His eyes narrowed when he looked at me. I pulled my mouth into a straight line trying to understand what just happened.

"Uh..."

He shushed me.

"I'm Yoongi... I have come to apologize for Kookie."

"Who?" I was confused. Before he could answer the door to my room opened and my mom walked in. Yoongi stood frozen staring at my mom in horror.

"Why is there a cat in your.... achoo!" She sneezed. Quickly I scooped him up and tossed him out the window, slamming it shut.

"S-sorry..."

She raised an eyebrow skeptically at me.

"Dinner."

"Yes ma'am" I smiled, when she left my room once more, I ran to the window where a very grumpy Yoongi stood with his arms folded.

"Sorry...." I mouthed. He shook his head at me, then turned disappearing into the woods.

"It smells great mom." I complimented the food sitting in front of me. Especially the corn bread. Mom makes amazing cornbread.

"You know we can't have pets." My mom started. I just nodded, scraping the side of the bowl with my spoon.

"If you know then why try bringing one inside. My spoon clanged against the ceramic bowl as I shot my mom an innocent look.

"Mom I wasn't... he- I mean it came through the window..."

She just narrowed her eyes and then changed the subject.

"What'd you do today?"

"Took pictures in the meadow.... It's so beautiful there mom. I wish we could stay here all the time."

My mom smiled at me.

"I know... me too."

The rest of dinner was silent, aside from the steady scraping of spoons. After dinner I cleaned up the kitchen and then disappeared into my room. When I closed the door, I felt someone watching me... and he was.

The same boy who kicked me out the meadow. He was watching my every move. His bunny ears twitched. How come I never noticed those before? As I looked at him they began to fade. Which answered my question soon enough.

"What are you doing in my room?" I demanded. Giving him my best angry face. Mom said I wasn't very good at being angry. But I tried.

He giggled.

"Yoongi told me where you were."

"The cat?"

Kookie frowned at my response.

"He didn't change?"

"Oh... he did."

Now that I think about it. Does that make him a bunny? Oh, I bet he is so cute!!!

"I see... well I was out of line earlier. I just hate the sound that contraption on your porch makes."

"What?"

Kookie's nose scrunched up, then he hopped out my window, reappearing moments later holding my camera.

"This."

"My camera?"

"Is that what it's called?" He asked, turning my camera over in his hands with curiosity.

"Yes... it takes pictures."

"Picture?" Again his nose scrunched up.

"Yes, like your eyes see. Well, it freezes something you see. So that you can print it out. See." I smiled, pointing at the picture of the sun setting at Lover's Key in Fort Myers, Florida. His brown eyes grew wide as he stared at the picture.

"That's beautiful..." he said breathlessly.

"It is."

Kookie looked back at me.

"You can't take pictures of us at the meadow. We are the unseen."

"Unseen?"

"Yes, we play in the daylight as animals, then at night we can turn into this form if we like... However, Jin prefers to stay as a butterfly. So you probably won't see him. You'd probably have a heart attack by how handsome he is.

I snorted unintentionally. Was this guy serious? Although at this point I'd believe anything he said.

"How many are there if you?"

"Six... we lost one a month or so ago."

"A girl much like you stole our sunshine away... it is said when our true love appears we would be drawn from the meadows to live a life of pure happiness. Or our love would escape to us and take on our true form."

"True love?"

He nodded, his cute nose twitching when he looked over at me.

"How do you know when you find the one?" I asked, feeling a bit silly.

"Hobi says it feels like your heart is trying to break out your chest. However, Jimin said he felt his whole body warm up. I suppose it's different for everyone.

"Have you found your true love?"

"I think so..."

"Oh..." I was disappointed. He wouldn't like me anyway. All I did was hide in the woods behind my camera.

"I think I hurt her feelings though."

My heart skipped a beat. He couldn't possibly be talking about me. I just met him today.

"You see... for the past week or so, she would come into the meadow quietly. Walking around smiling happily at all the flowers. Even telling them cute little stories about her day.  Each day she returned, every time she entered she seemed to relax and all the worries washed from her. But I..." he looked down at his bare feet. He seemed disappointed. Nothing like the disgruntled boy from the meadow.

"I made her leave... I didn't understand the noise she would make with her black box thing... I mean camera."

At that moment I swear my heart stopped. He was talking about me.

"You think I'm your true love?"

He smiled brightly at me and nodded.

"I..."

Before I could say anything else, he closed the gap between us and kissed me. It was just a soft peck that was over before it started. But it was enough to set my soul on fire.

"Y/N... you don't have to leave the meadow. I heard you talking to your mother. You could stay with us. I could make you happy."

His voice was soft and sweet like honey. The thought of being in the meadow everyday with him sounded like heaven.

"My mom..."

Kookie frowned, sadness taking over his once happy face. My heart squeezed. I never wanted to see that look on his face again.

"Let me say goodbye."

Once again his face lit up and my heart sang.

But, how do I say goodbye to my own mother? She would be alone. Dad left us years ago.

"Wait... could she stay too?"

"I don't think so."

I sighed.

"Take a few days, Y/N... I'll be waiting." Gently he kissed my forehead, then disappeared out the window.

All night I sat staring out the window. Trying to decide what to do. After several internal arguments I decided on a letter. I didn't say where I was going. Just that I loved her and I was sorry.

When I was done, I placed it on my desk along with my beloved camera then disappeared into the woods.

Like Kookie said he would be. He was waiting near the daisies where I liked to lay, a bunny-like smile on his face.

So, I ran to into his arms wrapped in his love forever.
