"Boy with the Scarf" // Taekook

The sun shone through the flat clouds in the sky that covered almost every inch. It was a beautiful day with a slight wind chill as Jungkook strolled down the sidewalk in the direction of his school.

He was wearing something simple, like a typical white t shirt with some jeans and a loose leather jacket slipped over his shoulders. He had no intention of running into anybody that morning while his earbuds were playing music loudly but he soon felt himself collide with a body.

"Oh my god-" Jungkook saw that the person had stumbled and hit their back on the wall. "I'm so sorry-" He looked up and was met by his friend. "Taehyung."

Taehyung chuckled and ruffled his hair. "It's alright Kookie."

"Still, I didn't mean to push you into the wall."

"You're fine." Taehyung shook his head and adjusted the scarf on his neck. "Were you on your way to school?"

Jungkook just nodded and avoided the gaze of his older friend, feeling a pink tint come to his cheeks when Taehyung brightens his smile and links their arms together. "Good because now you won't have to walk alone."

"Oh yes because I was dreading walking alone so much."

Taehyung gasped behind his scarf and rolled his eyes. "You love me Kookie."

Jungkook stayed silent and kept his head straight the rest of the walk while Taehyung's voice was mumbled through the fabric.

-

"When are you ever going to take that thing off?" Jimin asked while throwing his arm across Taehyung who was shocked at the sudden movement.

"You know I'm always cold." Taehyung embraced Jimin and rested his head on his shoulder.

"Yeah but some of us have literally never seen you with it off." Namjoon pointed out, leaning against the locker beside Jungkook who couldn't take his eyes off the pair.

"Well maybe one day when my entire face isn't frozen. Besides it's not like necessarily need to see my face."

"Your face is beautiful though Tae." Seokjin spoke up after joining the conversation with Yoongi trailing behind.

"Yeah yeah." Taehyung smiled and Jungkook tried to focus his eyes on seeing it but he failed when his head was shot into another direction at hearing a female voice.

"Jungkookie!" She squealed out, clapping her hands and smiling obnoxiously. "What time are you picking me up tonight??"

Jungkook scoffed and kicked himself off of the locker. "I'm not."

"That's not what you said last night." She smirked and tried to get close to him.

"You're right, because last night I'm pretty sure I told you to fuck off."

She pouted and started to fake cry. "Why are you so mean to me? I know you love me."

All of his friends stood in confusion while she continued to throw a fit that made Jungkook want to gag. "Jiwoo I'm not in the mood for this right now can you just go away and I'll talk to you later."

Jiwoo suddenly smiled at him and stopped her whining. "Of course babe. You have my number." She then walked away with her hips swaying purposely and this time Jungkook let out an actual gag, making Seokjin hit his shoulder.

"Okay.... so..." Jimin hesitated. "Wanna.... explain...?"

"I don't need to. That's Jiwoo and she's had a crush on me since we were like seven. Now she's just finally got the guts to do something about it and it's really getting on my nerves." He slammed his locker door shut and took his jacket off.

"She's very.... loud." Taehyung said with a laugh, earning a smile from Jungkook once he heard the angelic noise.

"One day she'll go away."

-

"Taehyungie." Baekhyun tugged on his sleeve and sat down with him at the cafeteria table across from Jungkook and Yoongi. "Please-"

"Baekhyun you've asked me every day for the past three months! My answer is always the same." Taehyung chuckled at his whiny older friend and Baekhyun frowned.

"Yeah but I wanna see." He moved his hands up to touch the scarf and Taehyung narrowed his eyes at him.

"Hyung please just leave it."

"Not even a little peek?"

"I don't know why it's so important for everyone to see the lower half of my face." Taehyung sighed in confusion and looked to Jungkook who shrugged in response.

"Fine." Baekhyun stood up again and patted his head. "But I will continue this every day until I die if I have to!" He then skipped away to meet Chanyeol and Taehyung shook his head.

"So weird."

"Annoying." Jungkook mumbled and Jimin elbowed him as he sat down.

"Don't." He also muttered and Jungkook scoffed as he stood up with his tray.

"I need to go the library. I told Jiwoo I'd meet her there." He looked frustrated at the sound of her name and Taehyung tilted his head.

"Right now?"

"Yeah. So she'll leave me alone quicker."

"What are you going to do? Take her out once?" Namjoon questioned, making Jin and Hoseok scrunch up their noses.

"Whatever it takes I guess." And with that he turned his back to them and trudged his way towards the library, leaving Taehyung to stare blankly at his food as he thought of an idea.

-

Jungkook tapped his pen on the corner of his notebook impatiently as the clock on the wall ticked ever so slightly. He felt his eyes stinging while he stared at the chalk board and his teacher was blabbing about something related to trig.

Then suddenly his phone in his pocket vibrated and he jumped a little. He slipped his hand down to his pocket and pulled it out on to his desk, just in time as his teacher assigned textbook work and excused herself from the class.

The notification read a text message from Taehyung. This made Jungkook grin and slide it open.

Tae: Kookieeeee

Jungkook: What's up?

Tae: Why do people want to see my mouth so much?

Jungkook: What do you mean?

As he waited for the next message Jiwoo stood up from her desk and made her way over to him with a big smile. "Hey babe."

"Not now Jiwoo." Jungkook didn't bother to look at her and she huffed.

"Why not? Pay attention to me."

"I did, at lunch. That was enough for me." Jungkook scrolled through something on his phone and she snatched it from his hand.

"Why don't you have a picture of us posted? Or my name in your instagram bio?"

"Because we're not in seventh grade and you're just cringey as hell now give me my phone back."

"Not until I do those things."

"Fine." Jungkook slid back down in his chair and let her mess around with things, knowing full well he'd get rid of it all as soon as she left.

"Who's Taehyung?" She furrowed her eyebrows when another notification came through and Jungkook perked up.

"He's my friend so don't answer it."

"But as your girlfriend I think I'm allowed."

"Bullshit you are now give it back." He grabbed it again and held onto it tightly. "Now leave me alone Jiwoo. You got what you wanted."

"Noooo. I want you." She flirtatiously giggled and he tried not to gag again.

"Yeah well too bad, leave."

"Fine. But I'll be back." She purposely tried to show off her ass and he rolled his eyes before looking back at his phone.

Tae: like, idk. everyone at lunch and in the morning wanted to know i just didnt think it was a big deal

Jungkook: hmmmmm i can only really say they just wanna see you smile?

Tae: rlly? but why?

Jungkook: because you're always so bright and smiley naturally and since you've moved here we've just heard it not seen it

Tae: how can you hear a smile??

Jungkook: you know what I mean hyung

Tae: I do i do

Jungkook: clear up confusion?

Tae: kinda

Jungkook: Good

Tae: do you want to see my smile?

Jungkook: I mean yeah itd be nice but i could never force you

Jungkook felt himself getting giddy as he thought about how beautiful Taehyung's smile could be. He felt his stomach flutter like a little girl with a school boy crush when he saw the texting bubbles.

Tae: thank you kookie it means a lot

Jungkook: of course. A lot is said in a smile and I think theres nothing to be ashamed of with yours

Tae: awee my little baby so sweet

Jungkook: psh your baby

Tae: you know you love me

Jungkook: yeahhhh okaaaayyy

Tae: Go back to class now

Jungkook: sorry, not everyone is blessed with your spare period

Tae: true that, have fun kookie!

Jungkook: thannks

-

The next day rolled around and it was finally Friday. Jungkook slammed his alarm clock to stop the ringing and he rolled out of bed reluctantly.

"Do I even have to go today?" He groaned as he ruffled through all the clothes in his closet.

"Yes you do my child." Seokjin called through the phone.

"I could call in sick?" Jungkook came back out and pulled his shirt off his body.

"Keep it PG Jungkookie jesus." Jin covered his eyes and Jungkook scoffed.

"Sorry Hyung."

"It's fine. Besides, maybe something special will happen today?? You never know."

"Or it could just be another boring day at school where the only thing that keeps me sane is Taehyung."

"Why don't you two just date already?"

Jungkook sighed and put his black hoodie over his torso, moving on to fixing his hair. "Because, he's got Baekhyun and-"

"And what? You've got Jiwoo? Seriously?"

"No." Jungkook shook his head and glanced at the phone where Jin was beginning to eat.

"Just come to school Jungkookie. You might actually enjoy it."

"Yeah you say that every morning mom."

"And I'm always right so you know what, listen to me." He grabbed his phone and began walking down the stairs to get his own food. "I have to go Jungkookie, Namjoon is here to pick me up."

"Alright, see you at school."

"Bye! Love you." As he hung up the phone Jungkook mumbled an i love you back and looked at his kitchen blankly.

-

Taehyung sat on the bus quietly with his hands in his lap and his eyes peacefully focused on the moving surroundings outside. He felt a small smile on his lips when he saw a familiar boy walking down the sidewalk with his hood up.

"Ah Kookie." He leaned his head back and felt his heart beat increase. "You'll know soon."

The bus came to a stop in front of the school a couple minutes later and instantly Taehyung ran out and to the bathroom in the main hallway. He stood in front of the mirror and watched as everyone left around him.

Slowly he slipped the scarf off his neck and felt the air hit the lower part of his face. He smiled only slightly and noticed how it looked in the mirror. He felt it soon disappear and he went to put the scarf back on when he refused and shoved it back into his bag. "Today is a new day."

As he stood up properly again his phone dinged and he saw a text message from Jimin to meet them out in the front foyer.

When he found himself standing in the middle of the busy hallway his friends suddenly gasped and looked at him.

"You took your scarf off??" Jimin had his mouth wide open and Taehyung chuckled a little.

"I thought it was kinda nice out today."

"Taehyung your smile is so nice!" Hoseok had a similar smile to match and he wrapped his arms around the boy.

"Thank you hyunggg. Now everyone will stop bugging me about it." He laughed again and they couldn't help but do the same.

"It's like it's contagious." Namjoon admitted, sitting next to Jin with his arm around him.

"It's so cute." Jin added.

"You didn't want to wait until Jungkook came?" Jimin asked.

"Yeah he literally always talks about wanting to see you smile." Yoongi scoffed and Taehyung felt his face go a little red.

"He'll see me later. I didn't know he talked about it."

"Of course he does, all the time." Namjoon almost yelled, making Jin hit and shush him.

"Well- wow." Taehyung shrugged and sat down next to them all. "Maybe I'll text him and we can go out for lunch."

"Good idea." Jimin smirked and sat on Yoongi's lap, feeling mischievous.

-

"Hey hyung." Jungkook called after him as Taehyung walked towards his locker. "You said you wanted to go out?"

"Yeah if that's okay." Taehyung had his back turned to him and Jungkook nodded with a small smile.

"Of course it is. When are the others coming?"

"Oh." Taehyung put his books on the shelf and stayed the way while he tried not to smile. "I thought it could just be us."

"Oh-" Jungkook chuckled. "Yeah sure."

"Good." Taehyung closed his locker door and smiled fully, turning around for the younger.

"Taehyung-" Jungkook noticed the missing scarf and he felt his heart jump out of his chest. He instantly fell in love with his smile and found himself speechless.

"Yeah?"

"Nothing-" He cleared his throat and averted his eyes. "We should go." He began to speed walk away and Taehyung was confused.

"Okay??"

-

The two of them arrived outside a small coffee shop after an oddly awkward walk. Taehyung grabbed onto Jungkook's arm as he went to open the door and Jungkook furrowed his eyebrows.

"What?"

"Do you have anything to say about... you know- me not wearing a scarf?" He asked timidly but Jungkook could sense his disappointment.

"Hyung-" Jungkook looked around and pulled them over to a bench beside the building. "I was... shocked when I saw you. I'm sorry I didn't say anything... I just don't know why you hid it in the first place."

Taehyung exhaled heavily. "When I was growing up all my friends and family would compliment me on my smile. They always said that was my best feature and I loved it. But.. I don't know.. one day before high school I just got attacked. A couple guys from my school jumped me and told me how I should never smile again because I guess it was taking the attention away from them."

Jungkook found himself listening intently and Taehyung chuckled sadly. "After that in school before graduation whenever I'd smile they would glare at me and threaten to hurt me again while they had all the girls, even though it's never been female attention I've wanted."

"What do you mean?"

"I had a crush on the most popular guy in school and I think he knew that, so another reason why he didn't want me to smile was because I was too gay or something."

"That's so stupid."

"I know- and I don't really know what made me cover up when I moved here because everyone is so different but I was just scared."

Jungkook hesitantly brought his hand up to Taehyung's face and he made him look into his eyes. "Well I think your smile is nothing but beautiful and anybody who tells you otherwise is jealous of how perfect you are."

"You think so?"

"I know so."

"Good-" Taehyung sheepishly smiled and avoided eye contact. "Because I also kinda decided to take it off to get your attention."

"My attention?" Jungkook looked surprised and Taehyung laughed.

"Yeah. Jiwoo always had your attention with her.... presence so I thought I'd try something of my own.."

"Don't tell me you were jealous of Jiwoo please." Jungkook also chuckled. "She literally means nothing to me. You wouldn't have even had to take off the scarf for you to have all my attention."

"Really?"

"Really."

"Does that mean you like me?"

Jungkook nodded and smiled. "It means I really like you."

"I like you too." Taehyung matched his smile and Jungkook couldn't help but feel his heart overwhelmingly.

"You make me feel so much Taehyung."

"Ha ha that was my goal this whole time." He cheekily smiled and Jungkook held onto his chin, bringing them closer together.

"Well congratulations on your achieved goal my love." He hesitated to bring them any closer and Taehyung sighed softly, pushing their lips together instantly.

Jungkook moved his hand back to Taehyung's cheek and he smiled into the kiss as Taehyung started shaking in happiness.

They pulled away and Taehyung bit his lip. "We should go eat."

"Or we could stay out here." Jungkook fiddled with the strings of Taehyung's hoodie and he rolled his eyes.

"But I'm more hungry." Taehyung took his hand and pulled him up. "And also Jiwoo is in there and you need to break up with her."

"Oh fucking finally." Jungkook jumped up and kissed Taehyung quickly once more. "I'd leave her any day for you, scarf boy."

Taehyung giggled and poked his cheek before he pulled them into the cafe.
