Chapter 16
JACKSON POV:
As I headed into the company's practice room, he was immediately bombarded by his members who fell onto the bag and takeout carrier he was holding; a ravenous pack of wolves descending onto the foolish prey who stumbled into their path.
All he could do was wait it out, and it was mere moments later when the group dispersed, my hands now empty and clothes dishevelled with a slight shellshocked look on his face.
How could people be so different? There was sweet little (Y/N) he'd met this morning, who was well-mannered and put people first, and then there was his group- no manners and pretty sure they were toeing the line between humans and animals, very finely.
I stood their gaping until I felt a nudge at my shoulder, and loud laughter.
"You okay there hyung?"
"Huh? Yeah...I'm fine, just wondering if you guys are human." And promptly got a whack to the head by JB hyung.
"Yah...don't disrespect your elders. It's really pretty much Bambam and Gyeomie who are overeager puppies." The boys protested at that, shaking their heads and pouting at us before bounding over to Jinyoung.
"Hey hyung, where'd your scarf go? You were wearing one when you left." Pointed out Youngjae-ah, and not for the first time I cursed his observation skills. The attention suddenly drew back to me again.
"You said you wanted to keep your throat warm, didn't want to risk it's good condition for the recording. So where is it?" Mark hyung interrogated me.
Ahh...do I tell the truth, or do I make up a lie? I'm not exactly the best liar though, I swear they all have an in-built lie detector.
"Ummm...when I was going to the café, I saw someone who needed it more than me, and I figured it was the right thing to do." Hand raising to clasp my neck, looking down in case they even sense the unspoken truth in my eyes.
"That's really kind of you to do Jackson-ah, aigoo...when did you grow up so much?" JB hyung ruffled my hair, I pulled away smiling slightly.
"Let's go practice." I suggested, walking away to lightly scruff the maknaes around the head.
Just as we all began getting into position, my phone rang out- my eyes widening at the name id. Without hesitating, I picked up forgetting completely about the members who had stopped walking with me, curious as to who it was.
"Oh... (Y/N)-ah, did you get back safely?" missing the boys' looks of surprise and the imperceptible steps they took to close the gap.
"Yes...thank you so much again..." her soft voice spoke out.
"Ah ah, (Y/N)-ah that won't do. You'll have to treat oppa. And soon, don't let it be too long okay."
"Yes oppa, I'll treat you. Let me know what's a good time. How does Korean beef sound? Deal?" her voice rang out.
"Waa...(Y/N)-ah, are you rich?? Or you're that grateful...? I teased.
"Fine oppa, your choice. Don't have beef, your loss...I'm hanging up now."
I panicked. "No no...deal. I'll let you know when I'm free. I'll text you later." And with that hung up.
But a sudden deliberate cough rang through the silent room.
I had forgotten the guys were here too. Oh crap. How do I deal with this now? I didn't want to drag (Y/N) into my mess.
I looked up to the owner behind the cough and met the piercing, curious stares of the group.
"So, Jackson-ah...who's (Y/N)? And why have we never heard of her before?" Mark hyung asked.
Shit. I was dead.
Looking around for an escape route, I saw a gap between Youngjae and Jinyoung and made a mad dash for it, it was futile.
"Ah ah, (Y/N)'s oppa. Where do you think you're going?" as a hand tightened on my shoulder and yanked me back.
There was no way I could get out of this one.
(Y/N) POV:
I entered the dance studio bearing the food and drinks for the boys, I knew they'd be waiting. They were all sitting slumped against the mirrors, they all seemed listless, postures fidgety and anxious.
Even Yoongi oppa was uncharacteristically vertical and awake...they hadn't seemed to notice me yet.
Just as I was about to walk forwards, Hobi oppa caught sight of me and leaped up, downcast expression falling away as his residential beam took over.
"(Y/N)-ah, you're here!" and bounded towards me, gently pulling me inside to where the rest of the boys were hastily getting to their feet and making their way over.
"(Y/N)-ah, why did getting coffee take so long?" Joonie oppa asked, his voice was both gentle but with that hint of authority that never failed to amaze me.
"Umm...honestly I was just driving for a bit before going to get coffee. Just clearing my head." I replied.
"(Y/N). Let's cut the bullshit and small talk. Who was that following us?" Yoongi oppa spoke up, voice both low yet powerful as it rang through the room.
Even Jin oppa didn't seem bothered by the use of language, that's when I knew he was bothered too.
"Who was following us..." I tried to play it off, but he narrowed his eyes at me, daring me to finish the lie. I gulped.
"About that...I saw a SUV follow us for some time, but I didn't what his intentions were towards us, and you guys are famous. I couldn't take any risks with your wellbeing, I'm sorry for my reckless behaviour." I bowed, but it didn't seem like the boys would back down from this.
"(Y/N)-ah, that's a nice scarf, can I borrow it sometime?" Tae's voice chirped up, my hands flew to my neck, I had completely forgotten I was meant to call Jackson oppa. I felt a few gazes narrow it, and I prayed for the boys to be unperceptive and unobservant, but I knew at least one would have noticed I wasn't wearing it earlier.
"Oh...it was slightly chilly when I got out to get coffee so, I went into a shop. I'll get you one just like this Taetae. Promise." He beamed at me, boxy smile on full display.
I appreciated the gesture; I knew he had been trying to lighten the mood and detract attention from questions I didn't want to answer.
There was no point, telling people got them dragged into my mess, they didn't deserve that. No-one did.
But on remembering the scarf, I realised I had a phone call to make.
"Excuse me a moment..." as a I whipped out my phone to call Jackson oppa.
After a few rings he picked up.
"Oh... (Y/N)-ah, did you get back safely?" his voice spoke up, I missed the curious gazes in the boys' eyes as they neared me to try and hear the voice through the phone.
"Yes...thank you so much again..." I spoke up softly, looking down at the ground and hence not seeing the glances the boys shot at one another.
"Ah ah, (Y/N)-ah that won't do. You'll have to treat oppa. And soon, don't let it be too long okay." His voice rang out teasing and warm, of course I intended to treat him. He saved me.
"Yes oppa, I'll treat you. Let me know what's a good time. How does Korean beef sound? Deal?" I bargained, I'd make time for him in my schedule, but I knew his was way busier and full than mine.
"Waa...(Y/N)-ah, are you rich?? Or you're that grateful...? He teased, I flushed slightly. When he put it like that, did it make me seem like I wanted to make it even...nah, he was teasing me, right?
"Fine oppa, your choice. Don't have beef, your loss...I'm hanging up now." I threatened, half joking, half conscious that the conversation wasn't over.
He panicked. "No no...deal. I'll let you know when I'm free. I'll text you later." And with that hung up.
I smiled as I lowered my phone. From the little I knew him, Jackson oppa seemed caring and teasing.
I looked up to see seven curious stares looking at me, oh no. Another thing to explain.
"(Y/N)-ah, you must be really rich. Korean beef isn't cheap. That's why Yoongi hyung never treats us to it." Jiminie said, dodging a swat to the arm by Yoongi oppa who yelled 'Yah' looking offended.
Jiminie just giggled and dived behind me. Leaning his head on my shoulder and sticking his tongue out at his hyung.
"I'll treat you next time, promise. Oppa and I had planned this for some time." I half-lied, hopefully they think he's my brother.
They maknaes of the group nodded.
"Here's your drinks guys. A strawberry frappe for Jiminie, a caramel frappucino for Taetae, hot chocolate for our baby Kookie, rainbow aid for our sunbeam Hobi oppa, a mocha for Jinnie oppa, cappuccino for Joonie oppa and iced americano with an extra shot for Yoongi oppa. There's doughnuts and cake in the bag, make sure you eat them." I said, whilst sipping languidly at my iced chocolate-coffee, and absently nibbling at the panini.
I proffered my panini to Kookie, whose doe eyes shone with happiness as he took a bite, nearly demolishing half of it in a blink.
"Mmmm that's tasty (Y/N)-ah, will you buy me one next time? I've never tried it before now." He asked, mouth full as he chewed.
Jinnie oppa whacked Kookie on the head for that.
"Manners Jungkook-ah, don't talk with your mouth full." Before smiling softly at me, there were still some questions lingering in his mind, but he knew I'd tell him later, that or he'd confront me when we were alone.
"Jinnie oppa try this, it's an iced version of mocha almost. You'll love it." Offering my straw to him, he bent down and took a sip, humming happily.
I offered the panini to Jiminie and Tae, I couldn't favour just one maknae could I? Scratch that, after they'd taken bites I went around to the older members, Hobi smiling happily as he took a bite, Yoongi grumpily taking a bite- apparently not happy with the disrupted conversation, but he didn't reject it at least. I had to tiptoe and stretch upwards to offer it to Joonie oppa, his dimples deepening at that, but he bent down to take a bite.
"Here you go Jinnie oppa, you can have the rest. Sorry it's not much." But he shook his head and accepted it, the maknaes side-eyeing him, and I knew they were planning to pounce.
"Yah. Get off brats!" Jin oppa yelled as the three descended onto him pulling puppy eyes at him and tugging at his arms.
I laughed.
"Well my job here is done for now, I'll see you boys at the meeting in an hour." I called over my shoulder as I left but what I didn't realise was that someone had followed me out of the dance studio.
As I neared my office, as I was about to open the door, a pale hand shot out and grasped my wrist. I turned my head to see Yoongi oppa.
He pulled me into my office, shutting the door and locking it behind him.
"(Y/N)-ah, what happened? And I mean the full story." He levelled a glare at me but there was still some softness in his gaze as he looked down at me.
"I did tell you the full story oppa." I avoided meeting his eyes.
"(Y/N) stop lying. When you lie you always fiddle with your hands." And I realised that I had indeed been fiddling with my hands.
He gently clasped them to stop the fiddling.
"I know I might be quiet at times, but you can tell me, and don't even lie about being cold and wanting a scarf. You had the windows down and you were enjoying the cool breeze in the van." He said nodding his head at the scarf.
"Besides...that's a man's scarf, I've seen it on other idols."
Oops. Guilty as charged. It didn't fail to amaze me how perceptive Yoongi oppa was, he was right, just because he was silent didn't mean he wasn't noting things all the time.
Should I tell him? it wasn't that I didn't trust him, not at all, it was more I was scared how he'd react.
"Does this have anything to do with why Jin hyung insisted you stay with us?"
I looked up, shocked.
"It's that guy isn't it? The one Jin hyung wants to protect you from?"
How did he know about him? Jin oppa told him?! I didn't think he'd betray my trust like that, I knew he wouldn't. Question was how did Yoongi oppa find out?
It must've shown on my face because Yoongi oppa spoke up.
"I wasming over to help you pack and I overheard your conversation, it wasn't intentional I swear, but once I heard that you were in danger, I needed to know..." he looked apologetic and sad, but I couldn't blame him. I couldn't find it in me to be upset over it, it was kind of liberating, but I didn't want him to worry at the same time.
"Oppa, you really don't need to worry. Honestly I'm fine." I insisted.
"I wasn't asking if I could worry (Y/N)-ah, and it's not something you can switch on and off."
I slowly walked away to pick up the folders for the meeting, I couldn't be late, and to be honest... I didn't want to go into the meeting feeling like an emotional wreck.
As I bent down to get the folders out of my bottom drawer, I heard Yoongi oppa swear.
Startled, I looked up.
His eyes were furious, and his gaze was narrowed onto me.
I looked down and realised the scarf had fallen forwards, leaving my neck bare.
Oh! My neck. I hastily straightened and tightened my scarf, pretending nothing had happened except for a slightly gaping neckline.
"Oppa, it's not polite to stare at a woman's chest." I chided, hoping he'd not noticed anything.
"(Y/N), I'm not going to repeat myself. Now tell me, how did you get those marks around your neck?" he hissed, his voice low and dangerous.
And with the look he levelled me and the fact he was blocking my only escape. I knew I had no other option but to start talking.
