Comforting the Members: Jimin's Breakup
"I changed everything for her... I lost weight, I tried new fashion; I practiced real hard at dancing and singing so she'd be proud of me."
Jimin hugged his knees to his chest with a solemn expression, staring at the wooden floor of the practice room you both were occupying. You two were polishing up some choreography for your newest comeback when he suddenly burst into tears, making the dance session come to a stop. Like the caring older sibling you are, you guided him to sit at the table and asked him what was wrong. He proceeded to talk about his infamous recent breakup.
"I was... I was trying new hobbies to keep her more interested. Piano, Golf -- anything she liked." He sniffles. "I even considered... taking a break from bangtan to go to school. Her school. To study a-and live with her..."
Your eyebrows rose in surprise. "What?"
"I know. It was a dumb idea. I don't even know how that could happen; but more importantly, I couldn't just leave you guys. BTS is like family," he scoffs. "I was gonna leave that behind for a girl?"
He shakes his head, his eyes turning more red and stained with tears. You pull your left leg to your chest allowing the other leg to dangle along the floor. You leaned into the table separating you and Jimin.
"Honestly, I don't know how you would've managed that either. But... if you really loved her, I guess you'd do anything." You sighed. You tried pushing the thought of Jimin's relationship out your mind since his girl didn't sit with you well; just the thought of her gave you heartburn. And sure you didn't know her personally so how can you judge, but meeting her once was enough to convince you she wasn't worthy of Jimin. And now she broke his heart?! She gon' gettt ittttttt. 👿
"I did love her. M-Maybe more than myself..." He stutters while wiping his eyes with his long sleeve.
Looking around, you quickly found some tissues to pass to him. He mumbled a 'thank you' before you asked the question everyone's been wondering.
"Why did you break up? "
He clears his throat roughly before beginning. "That's what I've been trying to figure out. And our newest album really helped with that... with figuring out my feelings and... what is important."
You nod. "So...? What's important?"
Jimin raises his head and looks into your eyes. Although it was obvious he had been crying, his pink plump lips still formed a smile. It was one of his infamous smirks you couldn't read, but you knew he was up to something.
His gaze continued to burn holes through you as he opened his mouth: "I loved her, but I love someone else even more."
His words made you feel awkward, along with his long stare. Your heart skipped a beat and for some reason you were expecting a certain combination of words to come out his mouth next.
"Wanna know who it is?" He lifts an eyebrow, making you more anxious. As if the tension wasn't enough to kill you, he licked his lips.
Park Jimin, don't play with me. Just tell me you l--
"Me." He giggles. "I love me more than I love her, so I chose not to be with her anymore."
Your eyes widened and you sucked in a breath as your heart sank to your stomach. Why did you expect him to say 'you'? Such a weird, stupid thought.
"I couldn't be in her shadows anymore-- it would've eaten me up. I would've been following her around everywhere, being her puppet and never being happy with myself." He frowns at the thought.
You scrunch up your nose. "What do you mean you couldn't be in her shadows anymore?"
"I mean I couldn't feel inferior anymore!" His voice gets louder as he uses hand gestures to get his feelings across. By the stupid, over-dramatic look on his face, you could tell he was feeling a bit better. Trying to bring comedy to a sad moment.
"You felt inferior? With her?" You asked in disbelief. He's a freaking mega popstar, she's a nobody. He got the money, the fame. How could he possibly feel less than?
He nods his head while leaning his arm on the table. "Yeah. You met her. Her IQ is crazy. She's super smart, already has her own place, she's got internships lined up, she plays instruments and is involved in all these crazy extra-curricular groups. Not to mention she can cook, like, she's the perfect girl my mom would love me to marry!" He exclaims with wide eyes.
You roll your eyes. "I mean if all you needed was a girl who can cook, you got other options. Why would you feel inferior because of that?"
"That's not the point."
He sighs, tickling the table with his fingertips to process his next words.
"I felt like... I wasn't enough. Like I had to do more to reach her level. She was better than me at everything---"
"Okay, masculinity fragile much?" You ask with an eye roll.
"It's not like that!" Jimin says and cuts his eyes at you. "I was happy for her achievements. Part of that is why I was interested in her in the first place. It-- I was..." He stutters. "I became... insecure. I overthink everything and wanted to be perfect to her. Perfect body, perfect dance, perfect brain..."
"No such thing," you deadpan in repulsion. You hated how Jimin always wanted to be perfect -- that was his Libra side. You understood it, but there's a limit to everything. "Do you really think she cared or wanted any of that?"
He nods aggressively. "Yes! She would always give me little hints: swooning over guys on TV showing off their muscles, their skinny frame--"
"Seems like all you're talking about is looks. Is that all she cared about?" You suck your teeth. Basic millennials only caring about looks. It's old.
"It's one thing she cared about, but it's my fault. If I didn't let that stuff get to my head... I don't know. Maybe... we'd still be together."
Sigh.
"Or maybe this is your time to focus on you and not someone else. You don't need a girlfriend."
"I know..."
We continue discussing his break-up, each minute feeling a little less heavier than the next.
