Chapter 9
I CAN'T BELIEVE I've got a date with Ian Maurice. Well, he didn't say its a date but I'm calling it that. We're gonna be spending time together, alone. Its a freaking date and for every date - especially one with incredibly good looking guys - one must look good too.
As soon as I got home, I dived right into my chores and assignments due for tomorrow. Ian said to meet by six and I agreed to it. On other days once I'm done with every thing I need to do, I'll be canoodling with my sheets or going through my phone and social media or maybe hanging out with Ellie and Zoe but today I'm going out and its not with Christine or Jamie. My mum had a few questions when I asked for permission and I told her I just needed to visit the community library. Since I'm not much of a reader, she hesitated but finally agreed to it as long as I'm back before my curfew by 10.
Now to the hardest part of every date — finding what to wear.
Today I discovered that I had a lot of clothes and out of all these nine looked and felt suitable for tonight. Dresses won't do since I'm going to a construction site and neither would skirts. I eventually settle for a faded denim shorts with white blotches all over it and a milky coloured knitted sweater. On my feet I wear knee high boots and I don't do anything with my hair expect run a comb through it. I put on light makeup like mascara, powder and lip gloss. When I check myself in the mirror, I look casual yet someone can tell I put in a little effort.
I run down the steps two at a time to avoid seeing my mum, she might have questions about the mascara and library. I tell Ellie to tell her I'm gone as I hop into my car and drive straight to the supermarket construction site. I see Ian immediately, he has his back resting on the wall of the good and undestroyed part. He still has the pants from this morning but now has a black T-shirt on and denim jacket. His hair looks wind blown and has many locks falling over his eyes, this time no bun holding them up.
He looks dashing, as always and its not until I get out of my car and shut the door that he finally looks up, noticing me. He pulls himself off the wall and runs a hand into his hair pushing a few locks back but not all, they fell right back. I smile at him and walk closer.
"Have you been waiting long?"
He shakes his head, "No."
I nod, "sorry I'm late. I couldn't settle for the right clothes."
"You look great." He says his eyes scanning my outfit, "but it usually get colder into the night. Your legs might freeze."
"Thank God I have you to warm me up then." I say and he looks down at the pavement, shifting from foot to foot. "Kidding. Don't get all awkward."
"Awkward?" He looks up defensively, "I wasn't getting awkward."
"What? Hasn't a girl ever flirted with you before?" I ask teasingly and he eyes go a little wide at my upfront attitude.
He finally relaxes and smirks. "Not a girl like you."
"A girl like me? How?" I ask crossing my hands defensively. I thought we were past the judging phase.
He turns around and starts walking, silently telling me to follow. "A girl like you. I've never hung out with a girl like you." He sighs at my confused face. "Well mannered. Good life. Brilliant. Well off. Beautiful..." He trails off, looking away and a sick side of me thinks he did that to hide a blush. "I've never been around a girl like you."
"Why not?" I ask internally swooning over the fact that he finds me beautiful.
"Well," he runs a hand through his hair. "Where I'm from, people like you aren't there."
"And where's that? Jupiter?" I ask with a smile then carefully watch where I was stepping as we were now walking into the constructing building.
"No, still earth. Just a less appealing side." He replies walking ahead as I try to keep up.
Oh, he's trying to tell me that he's poor. I kinda already know that. With the school uniform and textbook thing.
"Aren't there nails lying around here?" I ask not seeing where I was about to step my foot. I hate needles and I'm not in the mood for a tetanus shot.
I hear Ian chuckle and soon his hand holds my small lean ones and he starts leading the way, carefully taking me with him. I hear him mutter 'fry fingers' and I smile. My hands fit perfectly into his rugged big ones and I'm glad that I have fry fingers after all. We go up some brick stairs and after a while of climbing up the stairs we finally make it to what I realize is the roof. My eyes go wide as I take in the view before my eyes.
It's not the roof, there's nothing appealing about the roof just dirt, bricks and littered wood. Its what beyond the roof that appealing. The city looks great from up here the stars in the night sky looks much more closer. Even the wind here is relaxing.
"Careful you might catch a fly." Ian says smirking at me as he tips my jaw up.
"This is beautiful. I've never been to the roof of any building. Ever." I say, my hair flying around me.
"This is taller than most buildings and up here, you can't hear anything." He says looking around in awe too.
"Its wonderful."
"Yeah. Close your eyes." He says looking at me with his pretty sparkling eyes.
"Why? Do you want to throw me off?" I ask raising a joking brow.
"You'll never know until you close your eyes."
I chuckle, "but then wouldn't it be like too late?" He shrugs and I laugh. "Way to convince someone."
Nevertheless I close my eyes and I feel him move until he's standing behind me. Then I feel his hands go over my ears covering them. With my ears and eyes closed, I hear nothing, expect for the calm wide moving by and I don't know a more appealing and relaxing sound. Plus my heart is pounding over the fact that Ian is touching me. He let's go and I immediately miss his hands.
"That was lovely. Thank you."
"You're welcome." He moves to the edge of the roof top and lowers himself down on it, sitting down and swinging his legs over the building. He beacons me over and I reluctantly copy his posture on the edge with my heart beating but out of fear and paranoia. I can't help but think of all the possibilities of me falling down to my death.
"Let's compare hand sizes." My shaky voice says.
"Mines bigger than yours. Undebatable." He says not getting my hints.
"How are you sure?" I ask and Ian sighs giving his hand. I place my palm over his and subtly intertwine our fingers. "Yes, they are definitely bigger."
Ian tries to pull his hand back to him but I don't let go. I feel his eyes on me but I don't look at him, I force myself to look ahead instead. Eventually, he looks away and then I finally turn to see him. He doesn't have his usual frown on, in fact he looks relaxed and he's letting me hold his hand! I smile and glance at our entwined fingers, then back at the shiny town. Some lights were going off and since our town is indeed small, I bet before my curfew time reaches, almost all the lights would be out.
"Fun fact," I speak up, my voice isn't as shaky anymore and I'm pretty sure its because of Ian. Holding his hand here, something about him feels safe.
"I'm scared of heights."
He turned to me, "Really."
"Yup, intense phobia."
"Shit, I'm so sorry." Ian apologizes, making to get up but I stop him.
"No, its fine."
"We're way up the ground, Roxanna. I don't know how you're even here." He says motioning down with his hand.
"Because of you." I say before I could stop myself. I look away to hide my reddening face. "Have any phobias?"
"None that I know of."
I laugh, "I was expecting that." He raises a brow and I expand, "You don't just look like a guy who would be scared of anything."
"Oh really?" I nod and he smiles, "It'll surprise you then, Roxanna, I've got my fears."
"Like what?" I probe, half teasing, half curious.
"When did you know?" He ask instead of answering. "About your phobia?"
I pout, I lowkey didn't expect him to give me an answer. I sigh, kicking my legs out. Maybe if I open up more, he eventually will. Hopefully.
"My sister, Rachel was having a horse riding competition and we all - as a family - went over to support her. The stadium was really huge and my parents picked seats at the very top. I didn't get scared all through the elevator ride, heck, I didn't even know where we were headed. When we finally arrived, we sat close to the edge with just a thin glass railing in front. My eyes went wide as I looked ahead of me, all the meters. I got so nervous, panicked and started hyperventilating. The oxygen was making me super dizzy and I didn't get to watch my sister's first match and neither did any of us because I passed out."
Silence.
"Wow, that's quite the story."
I burst out laughing and Ian even managed a chuckle. "Yeah, I joined the riding next year just so I don't get to watch anymore. I scared my family and me, so much."
"I can imagine. I would be freaked too."
"Yeah." I trailed off. I regret missing Rachelle's first riding match. She didn't win but that's not the point.
"I have a major fear of needles."
My head snapped to him immediately, not believing that I actually heard that from him. I scoffed. "Don't lie."
I get that he likes being mysterious and secretive and just because I shared something with him doesn't mean he has to make up something to share with me too. I look at him with an offended frown but he doesn't look like he's joking, he even has this look of regret on his face. And my jaw drops, he's not lying?!
Ian shrugs, "and... I suck at lying too."
I smack his arm, "Shut up. Now I might seem like a naive town girl but I know for a fact that tattoos are drawn on with needles. How do expect me to believe you when you have an entire arm covered in tattoos."
He tsks, "I knew I shouldn't have said anything."
I pull on our fingers, "Tell me."
He shifts his eyes to me and away, biting down on his lip. Hot. "Okay, when I was getting my arm covered..."
He stops and I pull on our fingers again, blinking at him. He sighs and I swear his neck is red. This gotta be good.
"... I might or might not have passed out... fifteen times."
A laugh bubbles out my throat before I can control it and I clamp my hand over my mouth immediately but by Ian's face, I know it's too late.
"I'm sorry?" I squeak out, my eyes twinkling in amusement. I still want to laugh so bad.
Ian rolls his eyes, but its not in an annoyed way or anything, I think he's amused too. "Laugh, I won't be offended."
And I laugh, then cough and try to stop. I'm heartless. "Okay, now I'm really sorry. I shouldn't laugh."
He shrugs, "I would laugh at me too. Its pretty hilarious."
I smile and squeeze at his hand, three buildings already have their lights out. "I don't get it though, why put yourself through that?"
He frowns, narrowing his eyes to the world beneath us. I gulp and open my mouth to change topics but he turns to me with a smile before I can talk.
"And I don't get it, why did you want to meet up with me?"
I fold my lips in as I think of some answer but his beautiful eyes don't let me come up with anything. I slowly rise and fall a shoulder. "I was having a bad day."
"Was?"
I nod, smiling as I look at our still entwined fingers. "Yeah, was. Like I guessed, you made me feel a lot better."
Ian smiled and raised our hands up. "Glad to be of service."
I'm all smiles when I pack my car in at exactly ten pm. I didn't want to leave and Ian didn't seem to be in a hurry either. I have butterflies in my stomach and that's just by seeing him walk away, my car headlights lighting his way.
I can't believe I've developed a crush on the new mysterious guy. I can believe it because of his looks, what I can't believe is that its this strong and feels this good.
