A Sacred Wedding
Aaaaaa here it is! I have no words, except this: expect this to be wholesome!
Enjoy! :)
---------------------------------
So far, everything is moving smoothely. Bruce has no idea when that's going to change, but he'll take this for as long as he can get it.
But now he's actually getting married.
So yes, he is very, very, nervous.
"Sun's going down," Tony soothes him. "Sun's getting really low." He repeats it over and over again, holding Bruce's hand.
Even if the Hulk hasn't been a big problem since Sakaar, Bruce's stress and anxiety is still there, so these breathing exercises and gentle words help him greatly.
"You know it won't be too much time before I'm walking you down the aisle, right?" Tony reminds him.
"Yeah."
Tony sniffs. "My little boy is getting married. They grow up so fast."
"I'm older than you, remember?"
"Not by much!"
"So are you claiming to be more developed and mature than me?"
"Gosh, Bruce, the Fab Five are gone from your life for NOT EVEN 72 HOURS and you forget how to loosen up and take a joke."
"Sorry."
"Hey! No apologizing! Or did you forget all your character development?"
"Ss..."
Tony stares at him hard.
So Bruce swallows the sorry instead of saying it out loud.
Tony's pointed stare fades away immediately. "I told you that you would learn." He looks at his watch. "It's time."
Bruce takes in a deep breath. "Okay. I'm ready."
The ceremony is taking place on the roof. Sure, it has a lot of unpleasant memories from years past, but they wanted to make something more meaningful out of it, give it a good memory.
The small crowd of people they invited are there. Avengers, Asgardians, some friends, and a professional photographer.
And a group of five mysterious people in disguise.
All are talking quietly in their own spaces, until the music starts. That's when everyone stands up.
Thor smiles. He can't wait to see Bruce walk down the aisle toward him.
And there he is.
In his new suit, all clean and fresh, hair styled. With a smile on his face.
This is the man that Thor fell in love with.
And Bruce's heart skips a beat when he sees Thor in a suit that Bruce can't quite remember.
When did he get that?
I think I'm getting a premature ventricular contraction.
I bet it was Tan.
That must be what it was.
That was sneaky.
But Thor looks great.
I'm not complaining.
"Ready?" Tony murmurs in Bruce's ear.
"Mhm."
And so they walk.
Bruce looks at all the faces around him.
Standing in the back off to the side, he sees Pepper and Maria Hill. Then in the seats, he sees Avengers that he just met recently, like Doctor Strange and Wong, Peter Parker, Scott Lang, T'Challa and Shuri from Wakanda. Then there are those he's known for only a little longer, like Wanda and Vision, Rhodey, Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes. Then there's Natasha, Clint, and Steve, who he feels a closer connection to. Then there are those that were on the Statesman with him: Loki (who is good now--at least Bruce thinks so), Valkyrie (whose name they found out to be Brunhilde), as well as Korg and Miek.
There are a few people that Bruce can't recognize right off the bat, but he can't look at them closer because Tony is blocking them from his view and they need to keep walking.
Not only is this a celebration of Bruce and Thor coming together, but also the Avengers achieving what they've been striving for for years: nothing more to fight.
Once Bruce and Tony reach the end of the aisle, everyone sits back down.
And then it begins.
"We're gathered here today to celebrate the union of Thor Odinson and Bruce Banner in marriage," Nick Fury's voice carries out through the open space. "In the years that they have been together, their love and understanding of each other has grown and matured. With love and commitment, they have decided to live their lives together as husbands."
The usual marriage officiant's speech would say live together as husband and wife. But away with heteronormativity.
"There was an idea," he continues. "To bring together a group of remarkable people. Now, while what's happening before you was not the original intent-" a small chuckle ripples throughout the crowd- "no one can deny that this was meant to be."
And it's true.
"May you always need one another, not to fill an emptiness, but to help each other know your fullness. May you want one another; not out of lack, but to feel the warmth of their touch. May you embrace one another; not to encircle one another, but to give comfort. May you succeed in all important ways with each other, and not fail in the little graces. May you have happiness, and may you find it in making one another happy. May you have love, and always find love, in the pursuit of loving one another."
That hit Bruce in the heart.
Nick Fury takes a step back. "Now you may start your vows."
Thor starts first. "Bruce, I am so glad that we are where we are today. In the first few years we knew each other, we didn't talk much--that was a big mistake. But then on Sakaar? When it was just us? I fell for you harder and harder every minute. And now? I love you so, so much. Thank you so much for saying yes not too long ago when I did the scariest thing in my life and asked you to marry to me. I promise to stay by your side forever from now on, stay by you when things are great, when things are rough. Because I know you'll help me through my rough times, and I'll help you through your rough times. I promise to tell you every day that I love with all my heart, because I know you need to hear it, and I need you to hear it because it's true. And so, I'll start today. I love you, Bruce Banner. I love you with all my heart. There aren't enough stars in all the galaxies to express my love for you."
There's a little "awww" from the crowd.
Bruce grins, and begins. "For you, you said the scariest moment in your life was when you proposed. For me, my scariest moment in my life was saying yes. Because I didn't know exactly what would happen if I said yes. Because I had such a hard time believing still that you could love me for me and actually want me. But you do. I know that now. And I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you. I promise to be there for you always, through thick and thin. And we won't be alone. We won't ever be alone. We have all these people, right here-" he gestures to the audience as well as Tony- "who care about us too. And I can't wait to finally open myself up to the love that I should have let myself accept from the very beginning." He smiles. "I love you, Thor. I really, really love you."
Tony is not crying. No, he is not. That's what he's telling himself, anyway.
Nick Fury steps back up, ring box open. "Do you, Thor Odinson, take Bruce Banner as your lifemate and one true love, promising to share in all that life offers and suffers, to be there for him in times of plenty, as well as times of need, to sooth him in times of pain, and to support him in all endeavors, big and small, for as long as you both shall live?"
Thor smiles. "I do."
"And do you, Bruce Banner, take Thor Odinson to be your lawfully wedded husband, promising to love and cherish, through joy and sorrow, sickness and health, and whatever challenges you may face, for as long as you both shall live?"
Bruce smiles too. "I do."
Thor takes one of the rings and slides it on to Bruce's finger. Bruce knows that he is never going to take it off. Ever. Thor tells him in his sweet, sweet voice, "I give you this ring as a visible and constant symbol of my promise to be with you, for as long as I live."
Bruce takes the other ring and puts it on Thor's finger. "This ring is a token of my love. I marry you with this ring, with all that I have and all that I am." He's been wanting to say that for ages. And now he has.
"And now by the power vested in me-"
"Wait, don't we have to say something about objections first?" Tony interupts.
Bruce wants to facepalm so badly right now. I knew something wasn't going to go smoothly. Gosh darn it, Tony.
"I mean, I know that it used to be because there might be some legitimate grounds thing," Tony continues, "even if now there's no way to stop a wedding by objecting about legal grounds now, but I just wanted to say something because Bruce here needs to know that his wedding is valid and everyone here is happy for him so yeah, I needed to bring up ye old null tradition." He turns back to the audience. "So, speak now, or forever hold your peace!"
There's a moment of silence.
Bruce can't wait for this moment to end.
Suddenly, five voices call out, "we object!"
Another concerned pause.
"TO YOU GETTING MARRIED WITHOUT KNOWING WHO WE ARE!"
And just like that, the Fab Five stand up and shed their disguises, revealing who they really are, surprising everyone, except for Tony--who has a smug grin on his face knowing that it's all going according to plan.
Bruce's knees go weak from the shock of the surprise.
"You didn't think you were getting married without us watching, did you?" Karamo asks, smile wide.
"Your bestie Tony invitied us!" Jonathan informs Bruce. "Such a sweetie!"
Bruce turns to look at Tony. "Tony-"
"You're welcome," Tony interjects quickly before Bruce can say anything more.
Bruce sighs.
"May I continue?" Nick Fury asks, impatience showing.
Antoni looks up at the sky. "What's that?"
There's a glowing orb of color in the sky, coming closer to them.
"I was hoping for better time," Fury mutters. "But I guess this will have to do."
Carol Danvers--new to all but Fury--gracefully comes down. "Am I interrupting something?"
"Who are you?" Tony asks. "'Cause that entrance makes me think you would be an Avenger, but I'm pretty sure I'd know if we had a glowing flying woman on the team."
"Fury invited me," Carol answers, ignoring Tony's comment. "Said it was time I finally met all of you."
"Thank you, Carol, but now we have something to finish," Fury tells her. "Now, if everyone can just sit down and let us carry out the last part of the ceremony, that would be amazing."
Finally, everyone calms down.
"You heard them say I do," Fury picks up, "so now, by the power vested in me, I hereby pronounce you husband and husband. You may now kiss."
Thor and Bruce don't hesitate.
It's sweet and soft and gentle and so full of love, like all of their kisses are.
Their close friends just feel so much happiness welling up inside them. This moment is so sweet.
Everyone here is going to cherish this moment. Forever.
However, at some point, it'll stop. They'll all have food and drinks and tell stories. Valkyrie will come up to Thor and ask, "who is she?" referring to Carol, the newcomer, and Thor will tell her that Fury said that she was a close friend of his. That's when Carol will catch Valkyrie looking at her and wink, which will make Valkyrie blush. Tony will say that he is so proud of and so happy for Bruce. Bruce will thank him for inviting the Fab Five. That's when Karamo, Bobby, Tan, Antoni, and Jonathan will come greet him, giving him good wishes. Then, the professional wedding photographer Tony hired, a man by the name of Stan Lee, will take pictures; which will appear in Thor and Bruce's house. Everyone is going to be extremely happy. After it all, Thor and Bruce will go home, totally peaceful, and watch the stars.
But that's not this moment. Not here and now.
For here and now is everything.
Thor and Bruce have everything ahead of them. Together.
And that's all that matters.
THE END
------------------------------------------------------------
This is easily the most wholesome part of the story.
I had fun writing it.
I had to do a lot of research for all they said and wedding traditions, but I think it turned out all right.
I gotta say, I haven't been to a wedding in a while, so it was good looking up all the things.
One of the last weddings I went to was my cousin's, who got married to someone they went to high school with (but they didn't talk much then) and to college with (actually became friends then); got married in their backyard, at a lakeside, in a light rain; the whole ceremony was under an hour; the wedding officiant was their gay friend from high school with blue hair; my cousin's wedding ring was a turquoise colored band; and honestly, it was one of the best weddings I've been to.
And now I just learned yesterday that one of my other cousins is getting married.
Back to story commentary.
I just thought it would be funny to have Nick Fury as the wedding officiant.
And I had to have Stan Lee in this story somewhere.
Rest in peace, Stan Lee. We love you <3
By far this has been my favorite chapter to write. I loved everything about it.
Yep, I slipped some beginnings of Valcarol/Marval into there because I love that ship so much :)
Hope you all love the ending that's coming up! Thank you so much for reading this far!
I know I wrote the words "the end" but hey I need an epilogue haha. Hope you don't think this is dragging on forever.
Please, no homophobia, profanities, hate etc in the comment section.
Best,
~Your Beloved Author (who wishes that Thor and Bruce would actually get married in the MCU)
