Poem - Voices of Autumn
The rain, it drums upon the roof
And pounds against the window hard
It soaks through socks and shirts and pants
And forms deep puddles in my yard
Dances 'round and shouts out loud and clear
Autumn's here.
The wind, it bends the hemlocks tall
And wildly whips my hair around
And knocks the power lines about
And presses grass into the ground
It howls, just in case I didn't hear
Autumn's here.
The flocks of sparrows, fly on south
Enormous swarms, a hundred strong
They're swooping, circling, up and down
And in each mouth's a different song
They twitter just before they disappear
Autumn's here.
The leaves, they sigh and rustle above
Then one by one come drifting down
To form a carpet on the lawn
Of red and yellow, gold and brown
Then bend in close and whisper in my ear
Autumn's here.
