Chapter 23 - A last name?
-Phil's POV-
I got interrupted from the book that I was reading by Wilbur (1) walking in.
"Hey Will, you need anything?"
"Well, we are brothers, right?"
"Of course we are." I'm not sure where he's going with this. Is he worried that we don't like him now or something? Or maybe he's going to use this as a build-up to ask me to do something. If that's the case I might wish I hadn't answered so confidently. Oh well, I can't go back now.
"So that means we're a family, right?" He continued questioning.
"Yes, if someone is your sibling, it means they're in your family. You know this." That might sound a bit rude, but I'm just so confused as to what's going on.
"So what do most families have in common?"
"Uh, they love each other?"
"How about something we don't have in common with them?"
"I don't know, parents? Can you stop asking questions and get to your point?" I say, exasperated, then I feel bad for somewhat overreacting. More calmly, I say, "Sorry. But I'm sure whatever you're trying to get me to understand, it would be faster if you just said it."
He sighs. "You're no fun. But since you can't seem to figure it out yourself, most families have the same last name."
"Ok. That's true. Why are you mentioning this?"
"If we're really a family, we should have a last name in common!" I mean, at least now he's said the idea he wanted to say.
"Well, we obviously don't have the same last name since we all come from different families and we aren't legally related."
"I know that, but that only means we can choose a last name together! Who else in the world gets to pick their last name?"
"I mean, people can kind of pick their last name if they marry someone with their desired last name and take their spouse's name. But I get your point. However, just because we've chosen a name, that doesn't change anything."
"Yeah, but can't people legally change their last names once they're like 18 or something like that? We could pick a last name, and when we get older we can change our names to be the same!"
Actually, you can do that. How easy it is to do that varies by state, and I don't know what the rules are for this state, but still, he has a point.
"You're right, people can do that. Well, if it will make you feel more like we're related, we can plan to do that. Obviously, we'll need approval from everyone else, and we'll all have to decide on a new name together, but I'm fine with it."
"Yay! Okay, I'm planning a family meeting for tomorrow night."
"Could you possibly do Friday night? I have a test on Friday that I need to study for."
He sighs. "Alright fine"
Wilbur then leaves. Later, on Friday night, I find myself with the rest of my family in the spare room.
Wilbur starts off the meeting. "So, as I've laboriously and meticulously apprised to you all—"
"In english please?" Tommy interrupts.
"You're boring. Like Phil." Wilbur complained.
"Hey, Phil isn't boring!" Techno spoke up.
"Can you continue with what you were saying, preferably in more commonly used words?" I asked, not wanting to listen to a whole argument before this meeting even starts.
"Fine. Like I was saying, this meeting is about choosing a last name for our family, so when we grow up, we can all have the same last name and it'll be cool."
A little while into the meeting, every person had picked a favorite last name. I'd picked Sherman, Techno picked Newton, Wilbur picked Hawkins (2), and Tommy picked Sby.
"Wait, "Sby"? I've never heard of anyone having that name before." I comment.
"I know! If I chose the last name of someone I knew, it would be weird. It would be like I'm trying to be in their family, which I'm not." That makes sense. "Besides, it sounds cool! Like we're spies or something! But different, so our last name isn't just a random word. And maybe the b is because we're boys. We're spy boys!"
"When did we become spies again?" Techno asked.
"I don't know. It sounded cool, and I'm tired. It's Friday, the end of a long tiring week of school. Maybe that's why I picked it. Maybe my subconscious mind thought that the s would stand for sleepy, and the b for boys. But because "SB" doesn't sound like a last name, it added the "y" to make it sound better. And cooler. I don't know."
"I mean, that's still pretty random, but at least it kind of has some thought behind it. I just chose a name that sounded cool" Wilbur commented.
"Does that mean that we'll go with my choice?!"
"I mean, the name still does sound weird, and will probably raise questions - or eyebrows - when we introduce ourselves, but I think you're the only one genuinely excited about your choice. So I guess I don't have much of an objection to it. Besides, it's just a last name. Lots of people have weird last names either way." Techno thought out loud.
"I'm fine with it, though I do feel like when we actually get to that point, Tommy might regret the fact that we went with his option that he came up with when he's 12." I comment.
"Hey, just because I'm 12 doesn't mean everything I do is stupid!" Tommy protested.
"I'm not saying that, more I'm just saying that there are a lot of important decisions that I'm glad I didn't make when I was 12."
"Well I'm probably smarter than you were when you were 12"
"You're probably right. Either way, I'm fine with going with your name choice."
"Wow Phil. Thanks for the vote of confidence" I could tell that Tommy wasn't actually all that annoyed, and was more just happy that everyone agreed with his suggestion.
So, for the time being, we're informally the Sby family.
A/Ns:
1. I made Wilbur be the person to bring this up because irl, he's the biggest supporter of the sbi family dynamic
2. These names were from a random last name generator, so if you have comments on any of the names, they're random. I didn't put any thought into them.
