Chapter 18

"So what's the deal over there? What are his brothers like?" I cocked my head to the side as I considered Alec's questions. I was sitting in the car as Vincent went into the coffee shop to get us to-go cups when my phone rang.

"I dunno. It's just normal family stuff I guess? His mum is awesome. She makes incredible food, and you practically have to fight the brothers for a decent portion, but they are cool guys." I told him as I peered through the slightly foggy windows to see if Vince was in line.

"Should be if he is a Legacy. I heard that his oldest brother is in the military." He mentioned.

"Ah yeah, I think so. Not sure what he does though. It is pretty hushed even to family. His other brothers are in construction and banking, that I know of." I saw Vincent's back as he moved to one side to wait. My eyes narrowed as I saw a shock of red get up from a table and walk over to him.

Alec was saying something about his mom ordering take out for lunches because his dad couldn't get time off work. I hummed as though I was listening, but my focus was on the blurry figures in the window. The redhead was standing too close to my man. Vince shifted away and my eye twitched when the redhead followed his movement.

Our drinks were passed over and Vincent grabbed them quickly. He walked out without looking back. I saw the ex-boyfriend look out the window to the car and see me in the passenger seat. I smiled at my man as he passed me a drink quietly when he saw me on the phone.

"It's Alec. His mum can't cook." I whispered to him as he got in. "I've been bragging about your mum's cooking."

"Nice." He grinned and started up the car. Alec was whining that I wasn't paying attention to him anymore. He was right. How could I with Vincent sitting next to me and controlling this car like a regal king on his steed. I sighed in contentment.

"Yeah, sorry Alec. We are heading out to pick up some things at the mall now. Can I call you later tonight?" I admitted sheepishly. I heard him sigh.

"Alright. Not too late though. I have to get up for church in the morning with my parents." His voice sounded exasperated but he gave in.

"Deal. Later bro." I hung up the phone so I could stare at my boyfriend uninterrupted.

"What?" He glanced over at me with a small smile.

"Nothing." I said with a mischievous smile. He rolled his eyes. As we drove in silence his face fell and he glanced at me.

"I ran into my ex at the coffee shop." He said in a flat tone. I nodded slightly.

"Yeah? You alright?" I tilted my head to try and see his eyes. He didn't seem totally alright.

"I guess." He said shortly. I waited as he focused on traffic for a bit. Then he shook his head. "Nope. Forget it, I'm not alright."

"Did you want to talk about it?" I asked after a second. I mean, I had a feeling he was just waiting to be asked.

"He has some fucking nerve. We had dated for two years back at the end of grade school, when I find him with his tongue down some other dude's throat. And then when I get angry enough to put a dent in the door... he has the nerve to say I 'overreacted.'" The words exploded out of him and he tapped the steering wheel.

"Oh shit. He cheated on you? What an idiot." I hummed. Vincent glanced over at me and then huffed.

"He said he wasn't cheating because we were never official. He thought we were just fooling around. The worst part was the guy he was with was like... ten years older or some shit. Fucking gross."

"Just as well you found out when you did. You could have caught something from him." I agreed with him and made a face.

"I had to get tested. I have no idea who else the little shit was playing around with. I hate to think of what he is up to now that he is at that music school." I see the shudder run over his shoulders and reach out a hand to soothe him.

"His loss. My gain. He had The Vincent Wright and lost him. You don't have to worry about that sort of thing with me. I am, without a doubt, one hundred percent all yours." I told him in a serious voice. The look he sent in my direction was like a cannon shot of heat straight to my gut.

"Thank you Alex. That means more than you realise." He was finally starting to calm down again. I rubbed his shoulder as we pulled into the mall parking lot and looked over at the enormous building in front of us.

"Holy shit that is a big mall." I breathed. I heard him laugh as he swung into a parking spot.

"Yeah, you should see the other side." I didn't have a clue what he was talking about. I followed him inside the gleaming doors and my eyes widened. I gulped. The center aisle went on forever. He grabbed a pamphlet and handed it to me. I unfolded it and looked at the sprawling map inside.

"I am going to get lost." I moaned. He laughed and shook his head at me. He held out his hand and I took it.

"No way. I've got you." He pulled me along as I stared at all the different stores inside the place. It was deceptive from the front. Everything went up and back. Two floors of shops so close together you could only tell one from the next by the signs on the racks.

"How do you even find anything in all this?" I muttered as I swiveled my head around.

"What? You don't have a big mall where you are from?" He asked with a curious look.

"I thought we did until I saw this. Man. This must be what average guys feel like when they see someone with a bigger..." I smirked as Vince tugged my hand to keep me from finishing that sentence.

"There are kids here. Shush." He gave me a warning look and nodded towards a group of toddlers crowding an ice cream shop.

"Whoops." I licked my lips and shrugged. "My bad."

"Behave." He pulled me up close to him and I ran a hand down his backside.

"Badly?" I taunted him. He shook his head at me with exasperation.

"No. Like your mother is watching you." He said with a smirk. I pouted.

"Aw, that's no fun. Ohhh, look at those. I have to go in that store." I tried to tug my hand away so I could run away to the sports jersey shop, but he held on tight.

"Oh no you don't. We are here for Mom's list. You can come back another time and browse." He pulled me close and wrapped his arm around me when I managed to pull my hand free.

"Aww come on. I won't be long. I promise." I tried to blink my eyes up at him, made harder by my being only slightly shorter than him.

"You know, that is a little less effective when your lips aren't wrapped around my...." He whispered in my ear in a low voice with a smirk at the dirty look I shot at him.

"Says the man who told me to behave. Hmph."
