A Beginning, and Another

Once, there was nothing. Then, all of a sudden, three figures appeared in the void.

They were brothers. Notch, Steve, and Herobrine.

So, using their combined powers, they created the world.

First, sunlight.

Then land.

Then plants.

Then animals.

All was perfect.

But everything needs a balance.

Herobrine had powers with a darker side. Hence why everything Notch and Steve formed had an opposite.

Day and night.

Land and void.

Animals and monsters.

Though the brothers had a whole world full of adventure and things to see, one brother couldn't join the others.

Notch told his brothers that he would be forced into a comatose state to retain everything they worked so hard to create. Steve and Herobrine tried to convince Notch that they could find another way, but it was to no avail. Before he disappeared, Notch put his two brothers in charge of watching over the world and keeping the balance.

As a final gift, Notch created beings like themselves, though without magical powers.

And then he disappeared, never to be heard from again.

Steve and Herobrine enjoyed each other's company, including that of the other beings Notch had created from nothing. Steve and Herobrine came up with the name 'human' for them.

One day, Steve and Herobrine were walking through a village together when their eyes, brown and purple, locked onto a young woman.

She had orangey-yellow hair tied in a loose ponytail over her left shoulder. Her green eyes sparkled like emeralds and matched her light green top perfectly. Brown pants went down to her ankles, where gray boots rose to just above mid-calf. She had a bow slung over her shoulder with a quiver full of arrows on her other shoulder. She was beautiful.

The two brothers were captivated by the young woman. She was not like the other women, who were content at staying in their homes, safe from the monsters of the night. This woman lived by herself and did everything for herself. Hunt, grow food, fend off mobs, the whole plate.

Steve and Herobrine were surprised when she locked her gaze with theirs before walking over.

"Hi, I'm Alex," she greeted with a smile.

"H-Hello. I'm Steve. This is my brother Herobrine," Steve replied.

Alex's smile somehow grew wider. "It's nice to meet you," she said.

"Nice to meet you too. Right, Herobrine?" Steve replied, lightly elbowing his awestruck brother in the ribs.

"Y-Y-Y-Yes! V-Very n-n-nice to m-m-me-meet you t-too," Herobrine stammered.

Alex offered them another radiant white smile.

"Care to join me on an adventure?" she asked.

"Of course!" "C-Count me in!"

As time passed, the three became inseparable. It was clear from the start Herobrine had begun to form a crush on the young woman. Steve, however, was a different story.

Alex often acted against Steve's wishes, going as far as to actually sneak out in the night to do what she wanted. They often butt heads with their stubborn personalities, Herobrine trying to find a peaceful solution. But there were times when Alex actually acted kind and gentle to Steve on occasion. This thoroughly confused the young brown-eyed man.

What he didn't know was that he was forming feelings for Alex.

Almost a year passed before Steve realized it.

At first, he tried to deny it, telling himself every day she was just a friend.

But,

Every time he saw her, the way her eyes glittered at the thought of adventure, the way she skillfully fought the mobs with her bow and arrows, the way her eyes steeled in determination as she fought, everything, just made him fall deeper in love with her.

Alex too felt confused by her feelings to the men. She didn't know if she truly was falling in love or not. But, as she thought about it, she remembered the feeling of butterflies in her stomach whenever she was near Steve, but never did she feel that when around Herobrine.

And so, she confessed her feelings to Steve with the sun setting to the right of them.

She was scared. What if Steve didn't feel the same? There were many times when they were like cats and dogs, always fighting, but Alex wasn't going to give up there. And so when she heard Steve's reply, Alex immediately pulled Steve into a deep and loving kiss. The young man quickly melted into the kiss, leaning down ever so slightly to kiss Alex.

Herobrine watched from afar, his heart tearing up at the sight before him. He turned away, unable to watch the two lovers any longer, and trudged back home with a heavy heart.

As weeks passed, Herobrine's dreams were plagued with the image that had been seared into his mind. That moment when Steve and Alex kissed. He avoided the two as much as possible, who were confused as to why Herobrine was acting so distant.

One night, Herobrine woke up to a nightmare.

All around him there was fire. In the trees, the grass, everywhere. Animals ran from the fire, desperately trying to escape the flames. Ahead of him, Herobrine saw the silhouette of a young woman, not moving to try to escape the fire that was right at her feet. Herobrine ran forward and screamed the woman's name over and over, but she still didn't move. Only when Herobrine was only six feet from her did she turn to him. "ALEX!" he cried. Alex didn't move as the flames devoured her, not uttering a word.

Herobrine jolted awake, his purple eyes wide as he panted. Sweat ran down his forehead in little beads as he tried to calm himself down. The smell and sound of the fire and smoke had followed him to the waking world. A strange orange glow came from under the door. Herobrine turned to the door as it burst into flames.

The young man quickly jumped out of bed and ran to the window, but it wouldn't open. The lock had been melted, making it impossible to open the window. The flames crept closer and closer to Herobrine as he pounded on the glass, desperately trying to escape. Finally, when the flames had just reached him, did he break the window open.

Glass shards fell from the window, littering the ground inside and outside of the house. Herobrine was halfway through the window when he looked behind him to see how close the flames were. It was at that moment the fire jumped in Herobrine's face, causing the man to cry out in pain as he held his hands over his eyes, falling out the window. He crawled away as fast as he could, eventually reaching a small creek a safe distance from the house. Herobrine hesitantly brought his hands away from his eyes and splashed water on his face. The burning pain receded and was now only a dull ache. Herobrine looked down into the river, gasping at his reflection.

His face had slight burns on the sides, but his normally purple eyes no longer had anything in them. All there was was white. Herobrine backed away from the creek, horrified by his eyes. Tears started to form in his eyes, a few falling down his cheeks. Herobrine wiped them away furiously, turning away from the creek to look back at the direction his house had been in. His eyes widened before narrowing furiously at seeing the silhouette of a man standing beside the bonfire that used to be his house.

"I will get my revenge...." Herobrine growled.

A few years passed, and Steve and Alex lived a relatively normal life. Steve and Alex were now married, living happily in a small home in the forest. Though it had been years, Steve still couldn't forget seeing the flames sending ash into the air, the specks of ash being the remains of his brother's house. He remembered going mob hunting with Alex when they saw an orange glow through the trees. Steve ordered Alex to stay back before continuing forward, sword drawn. He remembered the horror of coming through the treeline to find his brother's house ablaze.

Steve shook his head. It was no use to relive the horror all over again. He turned to his wife and smiled. Alex had her head laid on his shoulder. She looked up at Steve and they locked eyes. They smiled as they gently kissed. Steve's hand was gently laid on Alex's stomach, ever so slightly bigger than how it normally looked. And no, she wasn't eating a lot more cookies.

Well, she was eating more than normal, but it still wasn't enough to do any real damage to her figure!

"I'm so excited," Steve murmured. His gaze was trained on the slight bump of Alex's stomach. "It'll only be about five more months. Then we'll have our little kicker," Alex replied. Steve smiled and Alex returned it. She laid her head back on Steve's shoulder as her husband placed his head on hers. "What do you want to name it?" Alex asked.

"I'm thinking Jesse."

"Of course you'd go for a unisex name."

"Yeah. That way I won't have to come up with double the names."

Alex rolled her eyes at her husband. Annoying, but she still loved him.

Husbands, can't live with 'em, can't shoot 'em with a bow and arrow.

Well, maybe the latter can happen.

...........

What? It's not her fault Steve stepped in her way and got an arrow to the behind!

Alex smiled at the memory and closed her eyes. Her life was going great.

Alex woke up in the middle of the night. Steve wasn't beside her. 'Probably went out late-night hunting. Never lets me come along since we found out we're gonna be parents,' Alex thought, her mouth twisting into a mock scowl. She hopped out of bed and stretched before walking down to the living room. "Well, if he's going hunting, I'm going too!" she said. Alex grabbed her bow and quiver, full of arrows, before grabbing a torch and leaving the house.

Steve crept through the forest, his sword drawn and eyes peeled for any mobs. But, for some strange reason, none were out that night.

"What is going on?" Steve muttered.

He continued on, spotting a cave just through the treeline. Steve turned around, figuring the mobs were being smart for once and was about to start on his way home. He suddenly stopped and jumped backward after nearly running into someone who had been right behind him. Steve gripped his sword handle tightly as he looked at the figure. Bright white eyes glowed in the dark.

"Who are you?" Steve asked. The figure laughed. It sounded strangely familiar to Steve.

"What? Don't recognize your own brother?"

Steve's eyes widened as the figure stepped forward into the light, revealing it truly was Herobrine.

"H-Herobrine?" Steve asked in shock, dropping his sword.

"Yes. It is me," Herobrine replied.

Steve was about to walk forward to hug his brother, but the look in his brother's white eyes kept Steve frozen in place.

"Herobrine, what happened to you? I thought you-"

"Died? I nearly did. The fire did this to my eyes. I'd probably be blind without my powers. And I wouldn't be able to get my revenge."

Steve barely had time to register Herobrine's words when his brother came running at him, enchanted diamond sword drawn. Steve quickly dodged the attack and kicked his brother in the back on his way by. Steve then ran to his sword and picked it up from the ground before turning to Herobrine, who was about to slice his sword through Steve's chest. Steve quickly blocked the attack and pushed Herobrine away.

"I see you've tried to stay strong."

"Comes with going on adventures."

"And this'll be your last!"

Herobrine ran forward and the fight raged on. The balance went back and forth, back and forth. It went on until Steve was pinned against a cliff, no way out.

Herobrine hit Steve's sword out of his grasp. Steve refused to back down. Herobrine reached forward, his fingers snaking around Steve's throat, lifting him so his feet no longer touched the ground.

Steve grasped Herobrine's hand, trying to pry it off his neck, which Herobrine had begun to put pressure on. Steve's eyes were glazed over in terror.

"I promise to take excellent care of Alex for you."

An arrow whistled through the air, lodging into Herobrine's shoulder blade.

He cried out in pain and surprise, dropping Steve. Steve quickly grasped the edge of the cliff. Herobrine turned to the archer, eyes widening in shock.

Alex stood there, another arrow notched aimed at Herobrine.

"Step away from Steve."

Though her voice tried to sound confident, it still shook.

Herobrine started to laugh, making Alex even further scared.

"Oh, Alex Alex Alex, you should've told me I was gonna be an uncle before shooting me with an arrow."

Alex's eyes widened.

"W-What?!"

"I'm a supernatural being, dear Alex. I know and can see specific things."

Herobrine stalked towards Alex, who had begun to violently shake.

"STAY AWAY FROM ME!"

"HEROBRINE!"

Herobrine ignored their voices. He almost reached Alex when time seemed to slow and stop.

Everyone was frozen, unmoving.

One figure walked up to Herobrine, sadly shaking his head. He placed his hand on Herobrine's shoulder, a light forming from it.

"Why have you become like this brother?"

Time sped up again. Herobrine stopped in his tracks, gasping. He looked down to see his right shoulder had started to pixelate and fade out of existence. It spread down his arm, starting on his right leg and torso. His face also began to fade, white eyes wide in shock and horror.

Finally, he had completely disappeared.

Alex looked at the place where Herobrine had been standing moments before. She quickly shook her head and dropped his weapon, running to Steve. She helped pull him up from the cliff edge, hugging him tightly when on safe ground.

Steve hugged her back equally tight, holding her in his arms, never leaving her again.

~~~~~~~~~~
Alex and Steve sat on the couch, their foreheads leaned against each others'. They both held a bundle each. Alex held a blue bundle, Steve a pink.
"They're beautiful....."
"She looks like you."
"And he looks like you."
"They'll go far in life....."
"Of course they will...."
"Our little J and Jess............."
