45. Magic Fight
Taj POV
Everything was in order for him to graduate in a few months. He still was deciding what was next for him. Immediately go to work, go to grad school, or a combination of both. If grad school, would he stay there at Illinois State? Depending on how things were going with Faye he would gladly stay.
"I'm going on this recruitment trip with Jossie next month, I heard you were coming as well," Faye said to him while they were in the office busy at work.
He looked up at her, though Jossie knew they were dating, they still did not flaunt their relationship in the office. No kissing, no googly eyes, no hand-holding, just two colleagues working together. Jossie sat at her desk, technically his supervisor, and he sat at a smaller desk shared by the other student employees that worked there part-time.
"Who's watching Kelz while you go away for a weekend?"
"See, the thing is, I can bring her. Jossie said so. Between you and Jossie, we all can keep an eye on her."
"It's nice to have a job and a boss that will let you do that. Jossie is the best, I've worked with her for years."
"If you stay next year, you can't have my job." She threw him a smirk.
He told her he was considering grad school there and pursuing a degree in Public Relations and sticking with the field of recruiting at Illinois State. If he stayed, there was always only one grad student and he could not keep his job there after matriculation. He was not concerned about that right now.
"I'm still weighing my options."
"You need to decide soon. Apply to grad school or look for jobs. It's hard out there, don't wait till the last minute.
"It's sweet of you to be concerned."
"That's what a good girlfriend does."
He wanted to kiss her, but he stopped himself just as Jossie walked in carrying a stack of files.
"You two finish that lists of schools we need to hit this semester, reach out to schedule visits and input updated scholarship data?"
"Yes!" they both said together.
"So now y'all talk in sync. Cute." Jossie put down the files on Faye's desk. "File these. Some transfer students need to come in and discuss challenging some classes. Sometimes credits don't transfer and-"
"Yes, we can get them to audit a class. Got it."
Faye went to work and Jossie came over to him. "I want you and the bruhs to come to my house tonight."
He frowned at her. "Are we in trouble?"
"Now why would you think that? No, I am your advisor, I like to meet with you guys now and then. The ladies will be there as well and my husband is cooking."
She walked off and went into her office. They met plenty of times at her house and her husband was a cool guy. This was kind of last minute getting the fraternity together to go there. At least MAX ladies would be there and it was always a fun time.
"That's so shady she invites you to her house, your boss," Faye said.
"What do you mean, shady?"
"Because of your fraternity?"
"Like she said, she is our advisor."
"Can't she advise you on campus?"
He had no idea where this was coming from. Most other advisors probably did the same thing for the fraternity or sorority they advised. It was more like bonding and getting to know each other, not like a business meeting. Whenever it was about business, they met on campus.
"Faye, it's just Jossie. And it's frat business. What, you want to come along with me as my date?"
"Ha!" She laughed at him. "I don't want anything to do with anything to do in your fraternity. "
"What does that mean?"
She stood up from her desk. "I mean what I said, Taj. I don't want to be involved with anything related to your little fraternity."
This was not the first time Faye said something slick about his fraternity, and he did not like it. She did not know a thing about his fraternity, because she never asked or got to know what they did. She barely even met his frat brothers. She met Brian once, never met the neos, but always had something to say about them.
"Faye, you need to meet my fraternity brothers and see some of the stuff we do. We do a lot of good on this campus. I know you think you know about Black Greek life, but unless you're in it, you really don't."
"I don't want to be in it, I think it's all dumb."
No...no way did she just say that.
He stood from his desk and looked around the office, but it was only the two of them. Jossie was in her office with the door closed so it was a good thing she did not hear.
"Fay, why would you say that? I'm in a fraternity, and you knew that when you met me. Jossie, your boss, is in a sorority, and I am sure you knew that when you came to interview"
Jossie had everything in her office with MAX on it, from her coffee mug to the letter opener, to the signs and plaques on the wall. She was a Founder of her sorority, it meant everything to her. He was sure she would not like to know someone who worked for her thought her organization was dumb.
"The fact that you are in a fraternity that no one even knows, well, that says it all."
She had crossed a line now. "You know what...I'm just going to walk away from this."
He grabbed his bag, and put his laptop in it, his phone, and his notebook.
"Where are you going? You're still on the clock?" Faye said to him.
"Clock me out. I'll see Jossie tonight." He had to leave before he said something he regretted to her.
A/N: Listen!! If a person feels this strongly against my sorority it's a wrap and I'm keeping it moving. Yes, there is a lot of bad in some organizations, some chapters, some people...but if Faye can't see that Taj is one of the good guys, well...
