30. Doomed Genius
Brian POV
He was happy to have J'Nae finally come down to see him. She had been down several times in the past, so she knew her way around. She had not been down since he was in the EU house. Previously when he lived in a residence hall, her parents would pay for her to stay in a hotel. Not that they didn't trust him, because they did, but they did not want her staying in a dorm filled with guys.
He wondered if he and J'Nae decided to take things further, before marriage, what would her parents think. They were not the ones strict about her saving herself, it was J'Nae choice. Probably based on some of her parent's beliefs, but he never knew.
All he knew was he was happy with waiting.
He was still getting it in whenever he could, but he only messed with Daysha, she knew how to keep her mouth shut. They had a whole system. She lived alone, so he would just go over there. They could be as loud as they wanted and Taj would not have to look at him funny in the morning.
"I love this campus so much! I should come more often...well, if my parents let me," J'Nae said while they were having lunch right off campus at Subway at the Amtrak train and bus station. J'Nae had a car, but her parents preferred that she take the train. He didn't mind picking her up, the station was merely a few feet from the main campus. He wanted to keep her away from campus as much as possible, in case he ran into any of his "friends with benefits" that would say too much.
It was Friday afternoon now, and the campus usually was light as many people went home for the weekend. Still, he did not want J'Nae to mingle too much with his fellow students and have them try and embarrass him in front of his girl. He was not sure which girl would run their mouth. He knew they would given the chance.
"It's all right. I miss you. It would be better if you were here."
She sat her sandwich down and smiled. "What if I asked my parents if I can transfer here?"
That was not a good idea. No way, but he had to act like it was a good suggestion.
"Babe, that would be...awesome!" Did he stutter? He tried to keep a straight face and say that.
This was bad. If J'Nae transferred and attended Illinois State with him, that would be trouble. Even though he cut out other girls, those old girls could still run their mouths if they saw his girlfriend on a daily basis. And he could not be with her 24-7, she would probably be in the dorm, and girls loved to run their mouths.
He was doomed.
"My parents probably won't agree," she said, munching away at her potato chips. She let out a frustrated sigh. "I'm twenty years old! You would think they'd stop trying to run my life. I'm not going to come here and wild out. I'm responsible."
"Yeah," he added. That was one thing he had going for him, her strict parents would not set her free. At home, they could keep an eye on her, and make sure he or another guy took advantage of her.
He was not going to worry about her transferring, it was not going to happen.
Then J'Nae asked to go talk to someone in Admissions. He was doomed. His frat worked there, and Advisor Jossie. The both of them would probably tell her to go for it and help her transition. He did not want to take her there, but he had no choice.
When they arrived there, he was told Taj was out on an errand, so he went right into Jossie's office.
"Oh, is this the mystery girlfriend you always tell me about?" Jossie stood and walked over to hug her. "So pretty. I was beginning to think Brian kept you hidden in a cave somewhere."
"J'Nae, this is Jossie DeCosta-Smith, Jossie, my girlfriend J'Nae Hayes. She's in town visiting for a few days."
"Boy, I figured she was your girlfriend, Taj said she was in town. Nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you as well," J'Nae said. "I just love this school. I was telling Brian I wish I could transfer. I'm a sophomore at Maryville University now."
"Okay, decent school, but we're the best...and I might be biased because I have two degrees from here," Jossie said with a chuckle. "Let me know if you're serious about transferring, I can help you out with that."
"But my parents want me to stay at home, so..."
"And you're old enough to make that decision for yourself," Jossie said. "Come on you two, let's sit and talk."
Jossie, with her fine self, looked like one of the students to him. The same height and frame as J'Nae, you would think she was their age though he knew she was a couple of decades older. And all that pretty hair. Her husband was a lucky man. He wondered if he knew what he had and how did they keep their relationship after all these years. He strived to be like them, married to his high school sweetheart, for over twenty years and counting. They definitely were goals.
Jossie went back to her chair to sit. He was not trying to stay for long and put ideas in J'Nae's head that she should change schools. Sure, it would be great to have her there with him, but he didn't want her to get her hopes up too high. Not only was ISU a bigger school than Maryville, but it was also tougher. The course work, the fast pace of activities, and the people that attended. Again, her parents would never agree.
He took a seat and J'Nae sat beside him, ready to tell Jossie her whole life story.
"I'm an only child, my parents are older, so they are real protective of me. I wasn't able to do much growing up without their watchful eye. I'm lucky they let me date Brian because he charmed them and agreed to all their terms."
Jossie gave him a look only they caught. She knew he was doing his own thing around campus because Jossie knew everything. He knew she would never tell.
"Not that I don't like Maryville, it's a good college, but...I want the away-from-home college experience. I want to be on my own and get ready for adulthood. They smother me sometimes and I fear they will never let me go."
"Parents are like that sometimes, but I don't fault them for wanting to protect you. But now it's time you take their teachings and live your life. You are...how old are you?"
"Twenty, I'll be twenty-one in a few months."
"Legally, they cannot keep you home." Jossie gathered some papers around her desk which to him looked like brochures and applications. "Now if it's a matter of them not paying your tuition if you attend another school, we can work some things out. There is always a way. But I think if I work with your parents, we can figure something out."
J'Nae took the things she handed her and looked them over.
"Really?" J'Nae turned to him with a smile. "Did you hear that?"
"Yes, unfortunately," he muttered under his breath. He was doomed.
A/N: Will Brian ever change? He cut out other girls, but still linking up with Daysha. Will Daysha run her mouth? If he feels the need to sleep around, he should just break up with J'Nae.
