Chapter XXII: My Brother, My Keeper
Getting dressed and grabbing your gear, Sienna lead you and Blake to nearby bullhead.
"So," you ask, "where is he?"
"Mistral." She spits, stepping on board the airship. "Sitting in my throne. I guess he finally got tired of leading a splinter group, so he staged a coup and took full command over the White Fang."
"And the council?" You ask.
"Kaa and Dodgson are dead." She says quietly.
"And Gruff?" Blake asks. "Is he dead too?"
"He will be." Sienna whispers.
"So, what's the plan?" You ask.
"Get in, kill everyone, retake the White Fang."
"That simple, huh?" Blake asks.
"Simple doesn't mean easy." Sienna responds. "We don't have any backup, it's just the three of us."
"The three of us will be plenty." You respond.
The rest of the ride to Mistral is spent in silence. It seems you just got finished with a war and now here you are, blade's sharpened and facing yet another battle. Eager though you are to put and end to all this, you can't say you're looking forward to facing your brother again. Though you don't want to think about it, you know, no matter what the outcome, this will be the last time the two of you meet.
The bullhead lands outside the Kingdom on the other side of the mountain range. Your brother is sure to have people within the Kingdom keeping a look out so approaching from within the city would be foolish. The White Fang base has been kept hidden in the mountain range, carved into the side of the rocks as to keep it secret from any humans, but the way is well known to the three of you. Creeping through the underbrush, you slowly and stealthily make your way to the base. There's only one entrance, Sienna's idea when the mountain was first hollowed out. It makes the base that much more defendable, which is unfortunate under the current circumstances. Hidden in the tall grass, you make out the sound of several White Fang guards standing outside the door, guarding the entrance.
"I count five guards." Sienna says.
"Six." You correct. "They've got a sniper in the trees."
"Alright." Sienna says. "We have to be smart about this. If we attack head on we don't stand a chance. Blake, you take out the sniper, (F/N) and I will handle the others."
Nodding, Blake stays hidden in the shadows and makes her way towards the trees as you and Sienna creep over towards the other five guards. A body drops from the trees signaling Blake has done her job. You and Sienna quickly dispatch of the other guards before they have a chance to alert anyone inside.
"Have you gone soft in the last few months?" Sienna asks, noticing how you used the heel of your blade to simply knock the guards unconscious.
"I won't kill my own brothers and sisters." You says, switching the ammunition in your AR-15 to shock bullets. "I'm not my brother."
Blake runs up to you, Gambol Shroud in its gun form. Pressing your backs to the mountain side, you slowly push open the door. Blake and Sienna slip inside. You hear a few quiet grunts of pain as they drop the two men standing inside. Following them in the door, your weapon silenced, you begin to make your way through the base.
Blake pokes her head around a corner and accurately takes out a few troops standing in the hallway. Coming up behind her you tap her shoulder to let her know its you, and the two of you make your way deeper inside. Kicking open a door you fire a few burst shots at the members inside, the electricity from your bullets stunning them and rendering them unconscious. Sienna rushes past you two and takes out the White Fang lining the hallways. Running after her, you shoot past her shoulder at a group of guards running at her from around a corner.
Continuing your silent path through the headquarters, the three of you eventually find your way to the mess hall. Running in, you find it empty except for one person. Sitting at the bar with his back to you is the large William Gruff, his sledgehammer leaning against the counter top at his side.
"I was wondering when you would show up." He bleats. Setting down his drink he gets off his stool and grabs his sledgehammer.
"Gruff." Sienna hisses.
"Khan." He nods. "It doesn't have to be this way you know. You could simply leave, let nature play its course."
"I don't think so." She says, letting her chain whip unfold. "I'm here to take back my throne."
"It isn't yours to take." Gruff responds, lifting his hammer. "Adam Taurus is in charge now."
Running at the three of you, Gruff lifts his hammer high over his head and brings it crashing down. You and Blake jump to the right, Sienna to the left.
"So, what did Adam promise you?" Sienna asks, throwing the dart of her chain whip at Gruff. "More power? A larger role in the organization?"
"He didn't promise me anything." He says as he leans out of the way of the attack. "But you and I both know that the old must make way for the young or else they get trampled upon. I'm simply evolving with the times."
"Out with the old and in with the new?"
"Quite." Sliding under Sienna's kick, Gruff drags his hammer along the ground, lifting it and tripping Sienna.
Throwing her feet into the air, Sienna spins on her back, kicking Gruff in the face, and flipping onto her feet. Shaking his head, the large Goat Faunus charges at the tiger, swinging his hammer with all his might. You and Blake are about to move to help Sienna when you hear something flying towards the two of you. Diving, you tackle Blake to the ground, narrowly avoiding the tip of Ilia's sword.
"Ilia?" Blake says as you help her to her feet. The two of you have to roll out of the way as she sends her whip in your direction again. "Ilia, what are you doing?"
"What I have to!" She shouts.
Jumping out of the way of her attack, Blake pulls Gambol Shroud from her back and takes several shots at her old friend. Ilia however, uses her sword to cut through all the bullets. Rushing forward, Blake and Ilia clash blades. "You don't have to do this!" Blake tries to plead with her friend.
"Yes, I do!" Ilia responds. Kneeing Blake in the stomach, Blake ducks under a swipe from her sword and tackles her to the ground. As the two fall backwards, Ilia brings her legs up to her chest and pushes Blake away from her with her feet. "This is the only way the Faunus will ever be treated fairly!"
"By terrorizing the innocent?" Blake asks. "That will only make the human's fear us."
"They should fear us." Ilia asserts. "Fear is respect."
"No, it isn't." Blake rolls out the way of another of Ilia's attacks and throws the tail end of Gambol Shroud at her. Wrapping it around her wrist, Blake tugs on her weapon causing Ilia to stumble forward into Blake's fist. "What you're doing is wrong."
"I knew you wouldn't understand." Ilia says as she spins around Blake and elbows her in the back. "And that's why you have to die!"
You rush forward between Blake and Ilia and block a downward strike with your sword still in its scabbard. Lifting your right leg, you kick Ilia in the stomach.
"(F/N), what do you think you're doing?" Sienna yells as she flips away from Gruff's hammer. "You need to find your brother before he can escape!"
"She's right (F/N)." Blake agrees. "Go, we've got this."
Quickly kissing Blake, you run past Ilia who is getting to her feet. She sends her whip in your direction, but it's brought to the ground by Sienna's chain whip wrapping around it. You and Blake rush Gruff. Taking a quick cut at his chest, he brings his hammer down on one of Blake's shadows which vanishes. Behind the giant, Blake distracts him as you run down the halls towards the throne room.
Taking a few twists and turns you quickly find yourself standing outside the doors to the throne room. Taking a deep breath, you push open the doors and walk inside. The room is surprisingly empty, no guards to speak of. The only person waiting for you is your brother, Adam.
"I was wondering when you were going to show up." He says lazily.
"Adam." You spit.
"(F/N)." He snarls. "Tell me, what's the plan here?"
"Remove you from power and see Sienna sitting back on that throne."
"Really?" He laughs. "Do you truly think Sienna is any different from me? Maybe you've forgotten that violence has thrived in this organization under her rule."
"Perhaps." You nod. "But she always knew where to draw the line."
"You know it doesn't have to be this way brother." Adam tries to convince you as he rises from his seat.
"We both know that's a lie."
"Is that so?" He asks. "Perhaps I can convince you otherwise."
"What are you trying to pull Adam?"
"I'm not trying to lure you into a false sense of security if that's what you're implying." He walks down the stairs. "Come, break bread with me." He indicates a large table in the middle of the room lined with food.
Cautiously approaching the table, you place your hand on the back of one of the chairs. "What is this?"
"Aren't you the one who was always trying to find a peaceful resolution to your problems?" He asks as he pulls out his chair and sits down. "I thought you'd be happy to see that I'm trying things your way."
"Is this your attempt at a trap?" You ask suspiciously.
"Maybe." He says, placing a piece of stake on his plate. "Or maybe I'd just like to have one last meal with my brother. Before it all ends."
Though you're still skeptical, you can hear the sincerity in his voice. Making sure not to drop your guard, you decide to sit for one last meal with your brother.
"I made sure the chef made all our favorites." He says, loading up on mashed potatoes. "It isn't poisoned, I promise."
"I know." You say as you being to take several rolls from a basket in front of you.
The phrase "awkward family dinner" doesn't even begin to describe your current situation. Down the hall Sienna Khan and your fiancé are fighting for their lives, while you sit here with your brother. You have half a mind to go back to your friends, but you know that the minute you stand up will be when your brother attacks, and if you're being completely honest with yourself, you've missed your brother and the time you used to spend together.
"I know what you're thinking." Adam says as he cuts his steak. "But this doesn't have to be the last time we speak." He places his fork in his mouth and begins chewing.
"I'm afraid I see no way this night can end other than one of us standing over the body of the other."
"Of course there's another way!" Adam says loudly, slamming a robotic fist against the table. "You can come back. You can come home to your family, to me."
"No, I can't." You say sadly. "I wish I could Adam, I really do. But I can no longer trust you after everything you've done."
There's a moment of tense silence during which you hear Adam sniff and wipe a napkin across his face. "So, you and Blake huh?"
"Yes, what about it?"
"I don't know man, I just, I never would have thought the two of you would end up together."
"Neither did I." You laugh.
"It seems almost cliché." Adam chuckles. "The girl I love falling for my kid brother."
Angered by his words, you drop your utensils. "You did not love her!" You say loudly. "Not the way you were supposed to anyways."
"Be careful what you say, brother." Adam says in a dark tone.
"Don't act like my words aren't true." You argue. "You're not capable of love, I'm not sure you ever were."
"Have I never loved you then, or Blake?"
"You loved us the way a child loves his favorite toys." You tell him. "And you treated us as such. Like we were your property, for you to play with as you pleased."
"Enough!" He shouts, throwing his napkin on his plate. "I'll give you one last chance brother; to go back to the way things used to be. You and I, together. To the death. Always."
"I can't do that Adam, and you know it."
"Well then, it appears we have nothing left to discuss."
"I agree."
Author's Note: The character William Gruff and his brother's were influenced by the fairy tale of the three Billy Goats gruff who attempt to cross a bridge guarded by a troll in an attempt to reach greener pastures. The character Jonathan Kaa was, of course, inspired by Kaa from the Jungle Book. Avery Dodgson was inspired by the Dodo from Alice in Wonderland. The Dodo was Lewis C. Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland, making fun of his stutter whenever he said his name (Lewis C. Carroll's real name was Dodgson, thus Do-do-dodgson, Dodo Dodgson.) The first name Avery is derived from the Latin word Avian, implying bird.
