Chapter XIV: Et tu Brute?

"So much for your father respecting me, huh?" You ask as you hear Blake's footsteps approaching from behind, the smell of her perfume carried by the wind.

"(F/N), I'm so, so sorry for what my father said." Blake says, her voice almost pleading.

"It's not your fault." You tell her. "You need not apologize for the actions of your father."

"Yes, I do." Walking forwards, she comes and stands next to you.

"There is no man or woman alive that I've respected more than your father." You wrap an arm around Blake's shoulders. She responds by nuzzling her face into your chest. "So you can imagine how much it wounds me to hear him say such things."

"He didn't mean it." Blake says. "I think he still feels you betrayed him years ago. He's kept that resentment with him for the past two years."

"Yes," you sigh, "I suppose. Perhaps I ought to speak with him privately. After we've both had a chance to cool our heads."

Continuing to stand in silence, Blake looks up at you and kisses you on your chin. "It's late (F/N), come back to the house."

Taking your hand, she softly pulls on your arm, prompting you to follow. Reaching the house after a brief fifteen-minute hike, you enter the house to find it quiet, even the buzzing of the lights has been silenced as the house sleeps. Leading you to the second floor, Blake tries to pull you into her room, but you stop her.

"Blake, what if your parents find us?" You whisper.

"That's not our problem. They're the one's that have to learn to be comfortable with it, not us."

"But..."

"Please (F/N)." She begs in her most adorable voice. "I've gotten used to having you next to me on the trip over."

With a sigh, you follow her into her room. Without removing your clothes, the two of you settle down in her bed, bodies close together. Burying her face into your chest, Blake nudges your hand with the top of her head. Smiling, you trace your fingers along the folds of her cat ears and through her hair. Kissing the top of her head, you close your eyes and allow the sound of her gentle purring carry you off the sleep.

Time Skip:

The next morning you awake to the sound of a camera shutter. Quickly pushing yourself into a sitting position, you blindly look around the room.

"Mom!" Blake shouts. "What are you doing?!"

"I'm sorry dear, but the two of you just looked so precious together." Kali says, her voice accompanied by the sound of another 'click'. "Don't worry, I won't tell your father."

"Mom! Get out!" Blake throws a pillow at her mother, but Kali quickly exits the room. The pillow hits the door and falls to the ground. Blake groans and falls back into the bed. You lay back down as well, propping yourself up on an elbow. "What?" Blake asks as she sees your grinning face.

"Nothing." You say. "I just love waking up next to you, that's all."

Blake giggles and kisses you quickly on the lips before jumping out of her bed. "Come on (F/N), we better get up. Before my dad finds you."

Descending the stairs, Blake leads you into the kitchen where Kali is sitting, reading the news on her scroll.

"Morning mom." Blake says.

"Good morning Mrs. Belladonna."

"Good morning you two. There's eggs and bacon on the stove. I think Ghira took all the sausages though."

"Thanks." Blake says as she grabs two plates from the cupboard, handing one to you. "Where is Dad anyways?" Blake asks as the two of you sit down next to each other.

"In his office I believe." Kali answers. "He's preparing to meet with Sienna Khan."

"Sienna Khan?" You ask in disbelief. "She's in Menagerie?"

"Not yet, no. But her ships coming in later this afternoon."

"Why is Dad meeting with the leader of the White Fang?" Blake asks. "I thought he was furious with them."

"Oh, he most certainly is." Kali explains. "But Sienna has assured him that Adam's actions don't represent the intentions of the White Fang as an organization. The two of them are meeting to discuss the matter."

Setting down your silverware you turn to address Kali. "Ma'am is the Chieftain still upset with me?"

"No, I don't think so." She says. "After you left last night I sat him down and I, well, let's just say we talked. His office is down the hall and to the left if you wanted to speak with him."

"Thank you." Abandoning your barely touched breakfast, you make your way down the hall and follow the scent of aftershave to find yourself standing outside Ghira's office. Knocking three times on the door you stand back and wait for a response.

"You may enter." He calls through the door. Entering the room and closing the door behind you, you turn to face Ghira. "(F/N)." He says in surprise.

"Mr. Belladonna."

"Look, about last night. I shouldn't have..."

You raise your hand and interrupt him. "That's quite alright sir."

"No, it's not. I had no right to address you the way I did. You were right, I have absolutely no idea the pain you've been through."

"Mr. Belladonna, sir?" You ask. "Do you still hate me?"

"What?" He asks, confused. "No? Not at all, why would I hate you?"

"For betraying you."

Flashback: 6 Years Ago

Returning from another protest with Adam, Ilia, and Blake, you entered the White Fang base and sat down at your usual table. You were in the middle of laughing with your friends when Sienna Khan approached the four of you.

"(F/N) Taurus." She says, interrupting your conversation. "The High Leader wishes to speak with you."

"With me?" You ask. "Are you sure?"

"Yes Mr. Taurus." She walks away from the table. "I suggest you don't keep him waiting." She says over her shoulder.

Turning back to your friends, you look at Blake. "Why does your dad want to see me?"

"I don't know." Blake answers. "But I would listen to Sienna if I were you. You don't want her to get angry with you."

Rising from your seat, you walk towards a hallway branching off from the cafeteria. Ignoring the many side paths branching off from the main hall, you continue along the straight path until it brings you to a large set of double doors. Knocking three times on the large panels, you stand back and wait to be allowed inside.

"Enter!" A voice booms from behind the wood. The doors open for you as two White Fang members on either side open the doors from the inside of the room. Looking around, you see Ghira Belladonna sitting at a large desk at the head of the room. "Ah, Mr. Taurus." Ghira says, abandoning his work and standing to greet you. "Please, come in. Sit." Doing as he says, you occupy one of the seats in front of his large desk. "I'm sure you're wondering why I've called you here." He says as he resumes his seated position, peering over a pair of reading glasses as he reviews several papers.

"Yes sir."

"Well, simply put, I think it's time you take a more active role in the White Fang." He says, shuffling through the papers.

"What do you mean?" You ask.

He holds one of the documents up to his eyes for closer inspection. "I mean this." He indicates his desk, covered in papers and folders. "The White Fang is more than just a group of protestors. We're an organization. And all organizations need people to run them." He removes his glasses and tosses the papers he was examining on top of a pile. "I was hoping you would be open to the idea of accepting a more active position." You sit in front of him in stunned silence. "Well?" He presses.

"What do you mean exactly?"

"An excellent question." He laughs. "As you are aware, I founded the White Fang to spearhead the fight for Faunus' rights. That doesn't mean I run this organization alone. As the organization grew, I needed to reorganize the White Fang to fit new demands, both internationally and domestically. As such, I chose a select few to sit on what we might call an executive board. Sienna Khan oversees the operations of the White Fang here in Mistral. Jonathan Kaa runs the branch in Atlas. Poor stammering Mr. Dodgson spearheads Vacuo. And William Gruff takes care of things in Vale. They each have their own assistants that help them run things, such as Mr. Gruff's two younger brothers. Those assistants report to the head of each Kingdom, and them to me. I however, don't really have anyone to help me. The four heads of the Kingdom definitely make my job much easier, but as you can see," he indicates his paper covered desk, "I'm in need of some assistance."

"And you want my help?" You ask, making sure he is saying what you think he is saying.

"Nothing too difficult, I assure you. Helping me organize events, assisting in overseeing our membership records. I would still handle the major operations like our budgeting and finances, but in time you would learn these things as well."

You took a moment to consider his proposition. It almost sounded like he was grooming you to take over for him. "Why me?"

Ghira sighs. "To be honest (F/N), there has been some unrest amongst the White Fang as of late. Many are under the impression that peaceful demonstrations are doing little for us. Sienna Khan and her followers are particularly agitated. But for the White Fang to succeed, cooler heads must prevail. But with as our population grows younger and younger, it seems the hot headedness of youth threatens to replace the wisdom of the older generation. But you, you've always been extremely mature for your age. You've never acted without considering the consequences of your actions. It's people like you that are essential for the White Fang to continue to flourish. And if something were to happen to me, I'd like to know the organization is in good hands."

"You're asking me to lead?"

"Not quite, at least, not yet. For now, I'm asking you to be my right hand. I know it's a lot to ask, to be thrust into a world you know little about, but..."

"I'll do it."

"You will?"

"Yes. It's like you said, cooler heads must prevail. Especially in times such as these."

"Very well Mr. Taurus, let's get started."

Flashback: 2 Years Ago

The members of the White Fang council are gathered in the High Leader's large office, waiting for Ghira to enter. Sienna Khan is standing next to you, her hand on your shoulder. "This is for the best (F/N). And don't worry, you'll still have an important role to play once Ghira's gone."

"What is the meaning of this?" Ghira's voice bellows from behind the doors right before they burst open. "Why have I been summoned?" Entering the room, he sees Sienna Khan, Jonathan Kaa, Avery Dodgson, William Gruff, and you waiting for him. "What is this?"

"Ghira, please, calm down." Sienna says. "We just felt we needed to talk."

"Talk?" He asks skeptically. "What about?"

"The council members of the White Fang feel it's time for you to step down." Gruff says.

"You're forcing me out, aren't you?" He asks, stunned.

"Please Ghira," Kaa rolls his eyes, "this isn't some hostile corporate takeover. Simply, we feel that your approach just isn't working anymore."

"H-h-he's r-right, Ghira." Dodgson stutters out. "P-protests and m-m-marches just aren't w-w-working any-anymore."

"Ridiculous." Ghira scoffs. "Violence is not our way. It's not how the White Fang operates."

"It wasn't how the White Fang operated." Sienna corrects. "But the number of skirmishes and brawls have continued to rise over the past years, meanwhile your peaceful demonstrations have done nothing to secure the rights you promised. Please Ghira, don't stand in the way of change."

Ghira shifts his gaze to meet yours. "Et tu, Brute?" You turn your head in shame. "Very well. If the people believe it time for me to step down, I will."

"Ghira, your input is still valued by the White Fang." Gruff says. "You will remain on the council, will you not?"

"No." He says. "If this is the direction the White Fang wishes to take, I cannot be a part of it. Best of luck."

Present Day:

"(F/N)." Ghira says gently. "I've never blamed you for what happened that day. It was not your fault. There simply was no place for me in the White Fang anymore. It's as I said, the youth replace the old."

"So, you aren't still angry with me?" You ask nervously.

"I won't pretend I wasn't mad at the time. I suppose that bitterness has carried with me throughout the years. The mistakes of an old man. Forgive me."

"I'm sorry too sir. Those words you spoke to me have haunted me for the past two years."

"Yes, well, perhaps the dying words of Julius Caesar were a little melodramatic for the situation." The two of you laugh lightly. "I'm proud of you (F/N), truly I am. Sienna has kept me in the loop. I know, despite my absence, you've still been an advocate for peace within the organization. I appreciate that my legacy didn't leave with me."

"Yes, well, I fear it has died with me." You say.

"Adam's actions are nothing short of criminal. In time, the Faunus will see that you and I were right. Violence only begets violence." He starts.

"Peace is the only way." You finish.

Ghira rises to his feet and you do the same. Moving out from behind his desk, he extends his hand. Taking it in your own, the two of you shake hands. You're caught off guard when he pulls you in for a hug. It may be bone crushing, but it feels nice, almost like being hugged by a father. "Thank you for protecting my daughter." He says. Stepping out of the hug, he places his hands on your shoulders. "Promise me you'll keep protecting her. That you'll keep her safe."

"I swear."
