Chapter V: A Familiar Face

You awaken several hours later in a soft bed. Pushing yourself into a sitting position to blink several times before remembering your sight has left you. Damn. This is gonna take some getting used to. You think to yourself. Just then you hear a door open and hear several people walk into the room. Jumping to your feet, you immediately lose balance and stumble forwards. One of the people who has just entered the room catches you under the arms. You can feel the person's small hands on your arms. From the feel of their hands, you would guess it's a female. Inhaling deeply, you realize you recognize the person's scent. Slowly, hesitantly, you move your hands to the person's face, holding their cheeks in your palms.

"What are you doing?" The girl asks, pushing you back.

You fall flat on your ass. I know that voice. "Blake?" You ask.

"Careful Mr. Taurus." A man says. Directing your attention to the second occupant you smell the heavy scent of hot chocolate (Ozpin drinks hot coco. Look it up). "You don't want to overexert yourself."

"Where am I?" You ask in a hostile voice as you rise to your feet. "Where's my Ōdachi?"

"Upon admitting you for medical examination, we felt it necessary to relieve you of your weapon for the time begin." The man says. "As to where you are; you are currently in the medical wing of Beacon Academy."

"Why am I here?" You ask, your normally calm and collected demeanor slipping as you panic without the ability to see. "What's going on?"

"Please, calm down." The man says. "My name is Professor Ozpin. You've suffered multiple severe wounds. You're lucky to be alive."

Ozpin places a hand on your shoulder in an attempt to calm you down, but you simply shrug of his shoulder and continue to blindly look around the room, ready to run should the need arise. Then another pair of hands grabs your shoulders; they're smaller, softer, and more gentle.

"(F/N)." Blake says in a concerned voice. "Please, try to relax."

Taking several deep breaths, you collect yourself and allow your posture to relax. Blake leads you back to the bed which you sit upon.

"What happened?" You ask, much calmer this time.

"Well," Ozpin says, "we were hoping you could tell us that. Ms. Belladonna found you unconscious in Mountain Glenn and brought you here."

You're reluctant to answer. You don't know this man. How can you be sure he's trustworthy? And what will he think given your dark past? Still, he had addressed you by name, which means he knows who you are at the very least. The fact that you're in a hospital bed and not a prison cell says something. And then there's Blake's presence. You've always known her to be a good person, and she's never given you a reason not to trust her. Still, you had a few questions you wanted answered before you were willing to tell them anything.

"What were you doing in Mountain Glenn?" You ask Blake.

"I could ask you the same thing." She retorts. After you say nothing, she sighs and tells you, "My team and I were sent there to see if there were anymore White Fang members still lurking following the Grimm invasion last week."

"Team?" You ask, confused. "What team? What are you doing at Beacon, Blake?"

"I go to school here (F/N). After I left, this is where I went."

"So, you left us for the humans?" You ask with a bitter laugh.

"Hey!" Blake defends herself. "I couldn't stay. What we were doing was wrong and you know it!"

"I see there are a few things the two of you need to work out." Ozpin says. You can hear his footsteps leave the room. "I'll leave you two to get reacquainted." With that, the door closes.

"You left without so much as a goodbye. Didn't you at least think to give your friends some notice?" You ask, somewhat hurt.

"Friends?" Blake scoffs. "My friends wouldn't have allied themselves with humans. They wouldn't have flooded the streets of Vale with Grimm! You have no right to be angry with me!"

"I am furious with you!" You shout.

"Well I am not even talking to you!"

You feel yourself start to smile as you and Blake start laughing. The two of you were close friends back in the day, and despite everything, you still are. You fall backwards onto the bed when she tackles you into a hug.

"So, Beacon Academy, huh?" You ask after the two of you break apart. "How'd you go from an avid member of the White Fang to attending a school to become a huntress?"

"To be honest, I still don't really know." She tells you. "A few days after I left the White Fang, Ozpin found me an offered me a place here."

"Well, I'm glad you're here." You say. "It's nice to see a familiar face. Well, to hear you voice anyways."

"(F/N)," Blake asks, the tone of her voice shifting, becoming much more serious. "what happened to you?"

"The job." You respond. "You know as well as I do the risks that come with being a member of the White Fang."

"Don't lie to me." She says. "There were no White Fang members anywhere nearby where I found you."

"It was a solo mission." You lie.

"Yeah right." Blake scoffs. "A solo mission that took you to Mountain Glenn and ended with you nearly being devoured by a pack of Beowolves. The (F/N) I knew could have taken care of those Grimm with a single cut."

"Maybe I'm not as good of a fighter as you remember."

"Please, just tell me what happened." She begs.

"Why is it so important to you?"

"Because I care about you!"

"Don't worry about me Blake, I'm fine." You say as you hop off the bed. "It's time for me to leave." You start walking away.

"(F/N)." Blake says, her voice thick with worry. "The door's in the other direction."

You quickly try to think up some excuse as to why you were about to walk into a wall but can think of nothing. You take a step back in surprise when you feel Blake's hands on your face. You release a sigh of contentment when you feel her hands gently caress your face, so soft and full of concern. You'd be lying to yourself if you say you hadn't thought about this at least once or twice, though you had pictured it happening under different circumstances. You feel her thumbs trace over a small scar running across your eyes.

"(F/N)," she asks as she removes her hands, voice sounding scared, "what happened to your eyes."

"It's nothing you need to concern yourself with."

"Stop lying to me!" She yells at you.

The two of you stand in silence for a moment. You can hear Blake's heavy breathing. "How many fingers am I holding up?" She asks.

"What?"

"How many fingers am I holding up?" She repeats a bit louder.

"Blake, this is really unnecessary. I already told you, I'm..."

"How many?!"

"I don't know!" You shout. Taking several deep breaths, you calm down and do your best to regain your stoic composure. "I don't know." You repeat more calmly."

"What do you mean 'you don't know'?" Blake asks you in disbelief.

"I think you've already deduced that."

"You mean... you mean you can't see?" She asks, voice heavy with concern.

"Correct." You drop your head. "I cannot see."

"(F/N), please." Blake begs, and you can hear the tears in her voice. "Tell me who did this to you."

You take a deep breath before confessing what you've been trying to hide. "Adam."
