Chapter III: Separate Paths
It's been a month since Blake disappeared. Since that day, Adam has had you scouring all of Vale in search for her, to no avail. Standing in his tent discussing your next course of action, you bring up the fact that Blake still eludes you. "I'll find her brother." You reassure him. "I swear on my life."
"Forget her." Adam says, surprising you. "It's time we go back to Mistral and..."
The rest of Adam's words are cut off by the sounds of fighting from outside. Grabbing your weapons, throwing Wilt and Blush to your brother, the two of you rush outside the tent to be greeted with the sight of the camp in ashes, White Fang bodies strewn about the place. In front of you stand the same three travelers from a month ago.
"What is this?" Adam asks.
The raven-haired woman, Cinder, drops two large swords on the ground while her subordinates, Emerald and Mercury, kneel behind her, each with a briefcase. "We could've gone to anyone for help." She says menacingly. "But we chose you, Adam Taurus." Raising her hand, a wall of flames suddenly erupts around you and your brother. "Our plans will be beneficial to both of us." She says. "Or one of us." Signaling the two behind her, Emerald opens her briefcase revealing a large amount of dust, while Mercury's contains a large sum of Lien. "So, which will it be?"
Later that evening:
Cinder's grand scheme turned out to be to flood the Kingdom with Grimm. Opening the sealed subway tunnels connecting Vale to Mountain Glenn, using explosive to create openings, allowing the Grimm to enter the tunnels, leading them to the city with a runaway train. She assured you that this was only a small part of a much larger plan, one that was sure to benefit the White Fang, but she refused to go into any more detail until you had agreed to join and proved yourselves loyal. After the completion of the first phase.
"This is wrong brother." You say, pacing back and forth in front of your seated brother. Adam had agreed to help Cinder with her plans to send Vale into chaos. You were confident that he had only done so, so that they would leave, giving you time to tear down camp and relocate. You were surprised to discover your brother was actually cooperating with the humans.
"No. What's wrong is the way the humans' continue to treat our kind. No matter what we do, they refuse to learn. We need to send a louder message, and this is the perfect way to do it."
"And what message do you think this will send exactly?" You ask, placing your hands on the table in front of him.
"That the Faunus will no longer roll over while humanity steps on us." Adam says, rising to his feet.
"And what happened today, hmm? Cinder and her people waltzed right into our camp and coerced us into joining them. Humans! Telling us what to do."
"Their plans serve me." He says, walking around from his desk.
"Their plans serve only themselves!" You argue. "Don't let your anger blind you brother! This is not an act of equality. It is an act of terrorism!"
"If the humans can only see us as terrorists then why not play the part?" Adam shouts. Turning his back on you, he slowly walks towards the map on the wall, examining the path from Mountain Glenn to Vale soon to be created. "It's time the humans learn we refuse to be treated like cattle."
"Violence only begets violence brother." You say quietly. "Father only knew how to hate, and that hatred got him and mother killed."
Quickly turning, Adam draws his blade and points it at you. "Father and Mother were killed because the police didn't think they were worth saving! Because Faunus lives aren't as important as human lives."
Walking forward, you allow the tip of your brother's sword to touch your throat. "But we're not worth more either. Equality, not dominance."
Growling in frustration, Adam lowers his blade, replacing it in his scabbard. "I don't need you to be okay with this brother. I just need you to stand by me, to remember what we promised; To the death. Always."
"Fine." You say, before turning and exiting the tent.
Four Months Later:
The plan was a failure. Roman Torchwick opened the path a month before schedule and the huntsmen were able to successfully isolate the incident and prevent Vale from falling into disarray. Regardless, Cinder believed that Adam and you had sufficiently proved your loyalty, and it was for this reason she, Emerald, Mercury, and you and your brother were now gathered in the main tent.
"Alright, we're all here. Now what do you want?" You ask, looking darkly at the humans seated in front of you.
"That's not a very nice way to talk to your new friends, now is it (F/N)?" Cinder says.
"We're not friends, we never will be." You say. "We're partners, nothing more."
Cinder scowls a bit before saying, "Fine. We're here because we believe you've proven your loyalty. It's time to prepare you for the second phase."
"No." Adam says. Cinder is taken aback by your brother's response. "If we're to continue assisting you, then it's time you told us the plan. The whole plan. No more keeping us in the dark. We're partners, not pawns."
Cinder considers the two of you before speaking. "Very well. However, I cannot be the one to give you this information. This is bigger than either of you know. If you want the whole truth, you'll have to meet with my... superior. Until then, I can only inform you of what's to happen within the coming months."
You cross your arms and lean back in your seat, your foot tapping irritably. Adam however, seems satisfied, and indicates for her to continue.
"As you know, the Vytal Festival is being held in Vale this year." Cinder explains. "We can over the finer details when you meet with my superior, but for now, know that we intend to use the tournament as a distraction."
"A distraction for what?" You ask.
"For the destruction of Beacon, of course." She laughs.
You press for more details. "For what purpose?"
"Again, I'm afraid you'll have to wait for my superior to explain. For now, you just need to know that Beacon will fall."
"Brother, a word." You say, rising from your feet. Exiting the tent, Adam follows you into the woods. Reaching a waterfall a couple hundred yards away, you turn to face your brother.
"What is it?" Adam asks in an impatient tone as he joins you, standing at the edge of the steep decline.
"This has gone on long enough brother." You say.
Sighing, Adam places his hand on his forehead. "We've been over this (F/N)."
"No. This isn't what we do."
"Yes, it is."
"No, it isn't!" You shout. "We aren't terrorists! Senseless violence and wanton destruction isn't what the White Fang stands for!"
"It's not senseless. It's justified." Adam says.
"It is not! Killing the innocent is never justified!"
"They are NOT! INNOCENT!" Adam shouts, spitting in your face. "No humans are! Peace does nothing for us! This is the only way!"
"If you destroy Beacon, people will die." You tell Adam.
"That's what people do!" He yells. "That's all anyone does. But that doesn't mean it isn't without purpose. Those who fall at Beacon will send our message."
"They're children, brother!"
"They're huntsmen. Only a few years younger than you, some just as old. Besides, they'll be fine, so long as they don't interfere."
"You know as well as I do that those students won't stand by and do nothing." You say.
"Then they will die."
"It's not just humans. There are many Faunus who attend Beacon. Are you really going to kill our own kind?"
"If they would protect the humans, they're not really one of us."
You take a step back, horrified. This isn't your brother. "What happened to you? This isn't you, this isn't my brother. My brother wanted equality for the Faunus, not the genocide a species."
"But we're not equal! We have everything the humans have and more. We are the dominant species. We should be ruling over them! Just imagine it; a world where the Faunus reign supreme. And you and I, we'll lead this revolution and we'll..."
"No." You interrupt. "If you go down this path brother, you do so alone."
Adam looks at you, his expression hidden by his mask and the darkness of the night. "We made a promise brother." He places his hand on your shoulder. "Are you with me?"
You grab your brother's hand, squeezing it tightly. You feel a single tear fall from you eye as you remove his hand. "No. You are no longer the brother I once knew."
You see tears falling down your brother's face from under his mask. He turns away from you, shoulders slumped. "Very well." He growls.
In a flash, he draws his blade and cuts across your face. You fall to the ground, screaming in pain as you clutch your now bleeding eyes. Through the pain, you hear Adam resheath Wilt before kneeling on the ground in front of you, placing his hand on your right cheek. Blindly reaching out, you grab onto his jacket. He leans in, placing his forehead on yours. "We made a promise." He whispers. You feel him draw Bloom from your scabbard. "To the death." He hisses as he impales you with your Ōdachi. You release your brother as he rises to his feet, instead gripping at the long blade protruding from your stomach. You taste metal as blood starts to rise in your throat. Adam pushes you with his foot, sending you falling over the edge of the cliff. You never feel the impact of the icy water swallowing your body.
