Chapter Twenty-One

The days that followed our arrival at our new camp had been rather peaceful, Dutch still hadn't found out but from just how quickly I had begun to grow I knew it wouldn't be long before he found out. Standing up from where I lay on my swag I found myself gripping the edge of the wagon that sheltered me for support as a sudden wave of dizziness hit me like a gunshot, taking a few deep breaths I found the sudden dizzy spell easing but it left an annoying ringing in the back of my head. Looking around I noticed Authur was also among the first awake as usual, making my way over to him I gestured for him to follow me so we didn't wake up the camp with our talking.

"Arthur, I want to head into Van Horn today and..." I began but found I was cut off by Dutch's morning rambles, mouthing to him that we would talk later we turned and headed back into camp to see what the fuss was about.

"Everyone! I have so big, big news, Micah has so kindly informed me of a train carrying army payroll heading straight for the tracks John and Authur so thankfully blew, now I'm going to request that all my fit fighters join me on this fine day, the rest of the plan will be explained once we are on the road, Miss Grimshaw get everything packed up, robbing this train is going to cause quite a lot of ruckus so I want everyone fit to move by the time we get back, now, let's ride!" Dutch called, looking at Authur I could see his anger towards Dutch.

"It's really time, oh Authur I wish things could be different, I can already see there is no way to stop you from going so you make sure John and Charles make it back safe, I will gather some of the girls and get them going because after today, there will be nothing left of us, " I sighed patting his back gently, with a nod he tipped his hat slightly before heading over and mounting onto Falcon before taking off. Holding back the unspilled tears I began to help pack the things into the wagons, no matter what happened I would make sure that Abigail, Jack and John at least had a fighting chance.

**Time Skip**

After what seemed like hours the sound of many horses heading in our direction made me hopeful that the boys had returned, what we saw however was Pinkertons.

"PINKERTONS!" I shouted before sending off a round from my pistol I always had on me, ducking behind cover I tried my best not to strain myself as already the gunsmoke and fear in my chest was making me feel sick. The feeling of someone grabbing my arms caused me to panic as I swung my fist around which ended up colliding with the face of a Pinkerton, aiming my pistol at his head I pulled the trigger but felt myself gag at the sight and smell. The sound of Abigail's famous screaming made me stiffen, turning my head I tried to aim for the Pinkerton dragging her away but found I couldn't get a clear shot and so as much as it pained me I had to let them go as they retreated from camp, looking over at Tilly we both nodded as she grabbed young Jack and mounted onto her horse while I mounted onto Ghost. Our time was ending and we all knew it, as we were heading after Abigail and the Pinkertons we almost ran straight into Dutch and the others.

"They got Abigail Dutch, the Pinkertons got her and they are taking her down to the docks!" Tilly fretted her eyes wide with fear, to my horror a dark look overcame Dutch's face that sent a chill down my spine.

"One girl ain't worth it Dutch, they probably have an ambush waiting for us, plus it won't be long before we have the law on our tails so if we want to leave we have to do it now!" Micah snarled his eyes narrowed with his usual hate, with a shake of his head I knew Dutch's answer.

"You are absolutely right, why risk our necks for the life of a single woman, come on! We have a camp to finish packing!" Dutch ordered, watching him race off with the others I turned my hopeful gaze to Authur and Sadie who had stayed behind.

"Where's John?" I choked out, with a grim look Authur shook his head.

"He got shot back on the train, but that don't matter now, what matters is that we don't make that boy an orphan, Grace, you and Tilly meet us by the cross roads nearby, once there wait until we return with Abigail, " Authur ordered before turning Falcon sharply and racing away with Sadie on his heels, glancing fearfully at Tilly we followed his instructions and headed for the crossroads. After everything this gang had been through I just hoped Authur would be alright, once we arrived at the cross roads we hid ourselves within the trees and we waited.

**Time Skip**

After about an hour of waiting Authur finally arrived with Abigail on the back of Sadie's horse, leaving the treeline we hurried towards them.

"Oh I'm glad to see you all alright, but we don't have much time, Dutch is gathering the gang and if he's truly lost his mind we aren't safe!" Abigail fretted, looking at Tilly I nodded to her.

"Arthur and I will head back, if Dutch won't listen to reason he might listen to us, " I stated despite Authurs attempts to protest I urged Ghost into a full blown gallop as I headed back towards camp. After only a few minutes I pulled Ghost to a skidding stop as I quickly dismounted and stormed towards the others, the sight of Micah only made my blood boil.

"Ahhh Black Lung and Grace, your back, now that you are back hurry up and help pack we don't have much time, " Micah ordered his eyes narrowed as usual, pulling out my pistol I aimed it towards the blonde haired asshole who I had hated my entire life.

"No I don't think so, we are going to have a little chat, everyone here is going to have a little chat, over the years we went from stealing to give to the poor to stealing just to please our pockets, we have sure as hell changed and I'm sure as hell making sure that those of us who deserve good lives get them, our time here is done, there is nothing left for us anywhere else, " I snarled glaring at those who I had grown up alongside my entire life, it was only when Dutch walked out of that cave that I truly knew we were finished.

"Dutch! You left me!" I heard an all too familiar voice groan, turning my head I noticed John limping into camp holding his shoulder.

"I had no choice son, I had no choice, " Dutch tried to soothe but it only seemed to anger the wounded man, shaking his head Dutch pulled his pistols from his belt and aimed them at us all.

"You've done nothing but try and save your own hide Dutch! You never cared about any of us! I was foolish to love a man like you!" I spat holding back my many tears, before anyone else could speak gunshots filled the air and instinctively I raced for the cave knowing it was our only safety. Racing through it's twisting tunnels I noticed Authur and John had followed me, thankful to know they had my back I led us towards the entrance at the opposite side of the cave. Once out the other side I ran for my life, shooting at anything that moved we began to make our way away from the family we had once been. Whistling through breathless lungs I called for Ghost, once he had arrived I mounted up making sure Authur and John were on horseback before taking off towards the mountains.

"The only way to lose them is in the mountains! If we can make it through the narrow passage I have some dinamite we can use to blow their only way through!" I called over my shoulder, turning my head slightly I failed to notice the Pinkerton ambush waiting for us. Within a flash the horses were spooked and Authurs collapsed on its own feet, dismounting I sent Ghost off to hopefully distract the Pinkertons a while until we could get moving again.

"Come on Authur!" John pleaded, with a saddened look at his horse Authur walked towards John. Looking around I spaced out of their conversation as I listened to the chaos around us, once John and Authur began moving I followed as quickly as I could without throwing up my daily meal. Climbing the steep slopes of the mountain I noticed Authur's strength failing him, pushing him up the hill with my own weight we stopped at a rocky outcrop and stood in a sickly silence.

"Grace, you make sure this idiot gets out of here and to his family, I'm finished, " he wheezed before bursting into a coughing fit, casting a glance at John I knew he would be too stubborn to leave until Authur made him.

"Arthur!" John pleaded again his voice strained with pain, in a slow and clumsy motion Authur placed his hat on Johns head before handing him his satchel.

"Get out of here and be a God damn man!" Authur snarled pushing John backwards lightly, walking towards him I could see he was not taking no for an answer.

"You were always like a brother to me, I won't let your sacrifice go in vain, " I rasped giving him one final hug before stepping back, for a moment I caught a look of pride flash across his face before the gunshots began to grow louder. With a final look towards the one man who had truly cared for those around him I began to usher John away down a narrow path, from here it was a straight run to Van Horn where we would be able to get out of here and start some place new. Calling Ghost I mounted up before helping John onto his back, urging the pale stallion into a steady gallop I turned and headed for Van Horn. Wiping the tears from my eyes I knew Authur had made the right choice, there was no way of us all making it off that mountain alive. As we continued on our way I began to think, if we could truly escape just how free would we actually be.
