Chapter Seventeen

Guns fired and people screamed as we fought our way out of the station, there had been almost no money and Dutch had to admit both Arthur and I were right. Running through the streets we fired at anyone who shot at us, the sight of a glinting silver barrel made my heart almost stop. Without thinking I shoved Arthur aside as a gun sounded and pain rippled through my chest, hitting the ground with a thud I felt blood pooling from the wound but I knew it hadn't hit anything serious or I would have died instantly. The feeling of arms picking me up made me groan in pain as I was forced to move, whoever had picked me up had placed something soft but heavy over the bleeding wound to hopefully stop it. I hissed in pain when I felt myself get sat down in the chair of what I assumed to be a trolley cart, slapping the hands away I sat myself in a comfortable position as my vision grew blurry. Grabbing my pistol I fire shots out of the windows in hopes of hitting someone, hearing screams and such told me I had. Shouting coming from the front of the cart told me we were in for a rather hurtful stop, bracing myself I clung to the bars of the trolley cart as it almost flew sideways and crashed down against the stone paved road. Hitting my head I felt darkness overcoming me, the angry shouting turned to panic as I felt myself slip into unconsciousness.

I awoke with a jolt and instantly regretted it, from what I could see I was being held gently in the lap of Dutch as we were heading back to camp on horseback. Noticing my jolt and my instant regret of doing so he looked down at me with relieved eyes, I gave him a half hearted smile as I sat limply there.

"You almost died Grace," Dutch pointed out with a flat tone, I sighed as I sat up holding my somewhat bandaged wound.

"You blame Arthur, don't you?" I muttered, the lack of reply told me my answer.

"It's not his fault Dutch, I agreed to come along and without me there they would have killed Arthur, he's far more wanted then I am a this point and we both know it," I grumbled before he could utter a word, the rest of the ride was silent and the moment we got to camp I dismounted too quickly for my own good and gritted my teeth in pain. Miss Grimshaw and Leopold Strauss rushed over and began to help me towards the medical room, I looked at them both thankfully as they sat me down gently. Dutch was growing to be a far different man than the one I fell in love with, this change was scary and sudden and I could tell people were going to get hurt and others killed.

It had been a few days since the incident, Dutch and the boys had killed Bronte and most of his men plus the fact they had also been planning to rob the Saint Denis Bank. After getting shot the most I was allowed to do at all now was help with light weight chores around camp and a hunting trip or two, of course me being me always brought back the biggest kill my horse could carry which always earned a scolding from both Dutch and Miss Grimshaw but I ignored them most of the time. Standing up I stretched thankful that my wound had healed and in record time, the moment I noticed Dutch heading for the horses with most of the boys with him I headed over.

"Let me come Dutch, I'm perfectly fine thanks to Strauss and Miss Grimshaw and...." I began but a simple look from him and I shut up and looked at my feet, hearing a sigh I knew that going with them wasn't an option.

"No Grace, the others need you here incase anything goes wrong," Dutch almost seemed to groan, with a sigh I nodded and they all took off. Heading towards the horses I grabbed the grooming kit and began to work away at their matted coats, ever since that O'Driscol boy Keeran died the horses hadn't been getting as much care. Hunger gnawed at my stomach like a cougar with a fresh kill but I ignored it, I hadn't eaten properly in days and only Abigail and Miss Grimshaw had grown suspicious but I waved them off whenever they asked. After hours of grooming the horses looked like their old selves which made me happy in a way, heading towards the large broken house I hesitated. Looking at the sun I noticed it was mid day and no one had returned, the sound of a single horse returning and seeing it was Abigail told me things had gone south.

"We need to go! Everyone pack up now the law will be here any minute!" Abigail shouted in pure panic, grabbing what I could I began to load things into our last wagon we had and everyone else began rushing about. After almost everything was loaded we took off after Sadie left a quickly written note to mislead the Pinkertons but lead the boys straight to us should they find it, flicking the reigns we took off towards the swamp lands where the law would have a hard time following us. I hated to leave without everyone by my side but I knew it had to happen or we would all be shot down and killed, hiding my fear I knew both Sadie and I needed to be strong for the rest of the gang until the boys found us. Taking a sharp turn we headed into the swamp, the heavy air would keep us hidden from those hounds the law used sometimes but the fact we were safer than before helped ease my mind as we soon arrived at a small village of very rotted buildings. Leaping off the wagon I looked around, this would be our home until Dutch and the others found us so we could decide a final plan of action.
