Chapter - 17
It was for the first time Neil observed Myra's eyes. They were big doe hazelnut coloured perfectly complimenting her fair skin. With wide open eyes and slightly parted lips he found her looking cute.
'Her eyes resembles to Neev. Innocent'. Thought crossed his mind in a moment.
Myra felt his strong hold over her shoulders, she could feel his slight pull. Unknowingly, her heart responded to his gesture and in daze she reduced the gap between them.
Today, for the first time Neil could see differences between Myra and Meera in their appearances. Even being twins they had different eye colours. But more than colour he could see innocence, purity, warmth filled in her big doe ones unlike Meera.
She had straight wavy dark brown hairs unlike Meera's curly black hairs with different shades of highlights.
Myra always either tied in high pony or in loose bun leaving few tendrils falling on her face. His fingers ached with a feeling to shift loose strands behind her ear.
Meera was super skinny but Myra she had perfect body structure which can give complex to any fashion diva.
Meera always wore layers and layers of make up with costly perfumes, branded cloths and accessories but Myra need not required to do anything extra to earn attention. Her eternal beauty accompanied with pure soul, golden heart was enough for anyone to skip his heartbeat at her one look.
His breath was fanning over her face leaving her cheeks to compete with tomato.
"My Mumma" Neev's voice broke their trance. He was pointing towards Myra.
They both gained their senses back. Myra got straight and shifted taking a step back creating enough distance between them.
"Sorry" she mumbled, adjusting her hair strand looking everywhere. She took a deep breath to calm her racing heart.
Neil could not take his eyes off her face. His eyes had already captured her antics. His mere proximity had pushed her in heebie-jeebies.
This was something new for him. Meera was bold, aggressive, gregarious and the same reflected in her eyes as well as in her overall attitude.
But Myra's shy, hesitant, self-conscious appearance felt good somewhere in his heart. Unaware of his own self his own heart took a note.
Myra could feel his eyes on her, to escape from an unwanted situation she took steps away from them.
They heard a loud scream from inside. Myra turned to Neil with shock.
"Is it Julia?" Neil questioned but ran inside to look followed by Myra.
Julia was lying on the floor, looked like she fell down from the stairs.
They both hurriedly came towards her.
"Ohh my god what happened, Aunty?" Myra kneeled down.
"Nothing! I just slipped from the stairs. I am fine. Don't worry." Julia replied but her pain stricken face told entirely the opposite story.
"Is it hurting somewhere?" Myra took a closed look. There were no external injuries.
"My right hand and left feet." Julia could hardly reply.
Myra checked, "Neil, call 911, we have to take Aunty to hospital. My wild guess is this is a fracture. We have to do x-rays." Being a doctor, Myra could assess the possibility of impact.
"No... No. I don't think so. I am fine. It's just a small wound. It will heal with time." Julia tried to contradict before Neil could reply back.
"Julia, she is a doctor. Neither you nor me. It's better to listen to her." Neil pointed to his wife.
When he took her side, Myra's lips stretched in a smile. It was for the first time.
"I will call 911." Saying Neil stepped aside.
"Julia Aunty, stay here only. I will bring an ice pack." Myra ran inside the kitchen to get one.
Within half an hour Julia was shifted to hospital for medical care. As Myra has diagnosed she had fractured her right wrist as well as left ankle. Doctors put plaster and advised her to stay in hospital under observation for two days.
Neil returned to his home to see Myra waiting for him. She stayed at home for Neev.
"What happened?" She ran to him when she saw him entering the living room.
Neil gave her a brief idea about his discussions with doctors.
"Ohh my god. Due to her age it will take time." concern was oozing out of her eyes.
"Yes that's what doctors said." he tried to extend their conversation. It was for the first time they were talking like a married couple.
"I will set dinner. You must be hungry." She made an excuse.
"Yes, I will just freshen up." He turned, "Where is Neev?"
"He slept." She replied, "He is my room. If you want you can ..."
"No it's ok. I don't want to disturb his sleep." His reply amazed her but she stayed silent.
After a long shower Neil came down to see Myra had already set a table with food for him.
He scrunched his eyebrows when he saw only one plate on the dining table.
"Are you not eating?" words were out even before he realised.
She was taken back with his sudden question. They were never on talking terms before, his sudden concern gave alien feelings to her.
"No I am.. I am not hungry." She bit her inner cheek to lie.
"It's almost 11 and you are saying you are not hungry." It was more of a question than a statement.
Myra did not have any energy to fight with him, she silently went inside to get another plate for herself.
Both had their dinner together without sharing a single word.
Myra started to wind up when Neil mentioned. "Is it ok if Julia stays here?"
"What do you mean?" She was confused with his question. 'Julia Aunty always stayed here. Where is she going now? With this condition she should take maximum rest.'
"I mean... Julia has broken her hand and leg. She won't be able to move for at least a month so is it ok if she still stays with us."
"Then where will she go? She needs maximum rest." Myra was still clueless.
"All house work and responsibilities of the house ...."
He fumbled.
'Ohh come on Neil, move her to some hospital or anywhere. I am not a nurse or servant to look after her. She is just a mere housekeeper, give her some money... admit her in the care centre... she will be able to handle herself.' Those were Meera's words when Julia had her first cataract operation.
"We can look for a new servant but... It might take some time." He could not complete it.
"I am not able to understand what you are talking about but when we are there, why will Julia Aunty go anywhere else? I am there to take care of her. And regarding this house and its responsibilities, I can manage with her guidance."
"Will you be ok taking care of her? We can look for any nurse..."
"Why do we need any nurse? I am a medical student and I can look after her." Her statement left Neil in a flabbergasted state. He was looking at her without a blink.
She stared in his eyes which were still wide open in surprise. He had never expected her to be kind enough for a mere servant of his house.
'Her upbringing will make a difference.' His father's words rang in his ears.
Myra broke their eye lock and turned to go inside. She came back to pick up food bowls and Neil helped her with remaining dishes, glasses and bowls.
She stored leftover food in storage boxes and started putting dirty dishes in the kitchen sink. Neil took a step to wash them and started arranging them in the dishwasher.
"It's ok. I will do it." Myra turned to see him working.
"No, that's fine."
"You must be tired after a long day." she mumbled.
"You must be too." He declared still concentrating on his work.
'Why did he suddenly start showing his concern? Is he the real Neil?' Thought crossed her mind. She bit her lower lip and turned to the kitchen counter to wipe it.
They both called off for the night and moved upstairs for their respective rooms. Myra observed Neil's presence around her till she finished her work.
"Good night Myra." he called from behind, seeing her entering her room.
"Good night Neil." she forced herself to reply back.
Next day, Myra was the first one to get up. She had already set an alarm with the thought that today it was her only who would need to make Neil and Neev's breakfast and also needed to look after other household work. She came downstairs. She started preparing Neil's black roast dark coffee.
Neil got up on his usual timings, he came out to see Myra's room's door open. He peeped inside. His son was sleeping on her bed, she had safely tucked him between pillows and covered under a blanket.
He came down to witness silence in the living area. He moved to the kitchen where Myra was preparing omelette for breakfast. Her hands were efficiently moving over. She was dressed in a simple sweatshirt and tack pants, her hairs were tied in a messy bun. She had her own charm which does not require any make up or fancy clothes or accessories.
"Good Morning" he stuffed his hands in his tack pants pockets standing at the kitchen entrance.
"Good Morning" She scrunched her eyebrows.
"Your coffee" she handed over a mug.
"Hmm" Freshly brewed coffee hit his nostrils
"Are you not leaving for office?" She asked, looking at his casual clothing.
" No, I will work from home for today."
"Ok breakfast is ready." She put bread in the toaster. She hoped he would leave and settle down in the dining area but he stayed there without moving.
She was observing him from corner eyes whose eyes were following her everywhere. Her mere presence around him filled peace in his heart. Unknowingly his mind was capturing details about her, her eyes were moving again and again on the baby monitor screen which was showing his son sleeping in her room.
His stared made her uncomfortable, "You can settle down on the dining table."
"Ok. Do you need any help?"
"No, I am fine." She avoided looking at his side.
He stepped inside to pick up the tray which she was filling up earlier with food and juice bottles.
"Just bring toast." he said while leaving, taking a tray along with him.
After some time Myra came along with a plate filled with toast and baby monitor in her other hand.
They both were having their breakfast, when they heard soft mumblings from the baby monitor.
"Ohh he is awake." Myra got up from her seat.
"You continue. I will get him down." He without giving her any chance to oppose left to get his son.
Neil brought his son down and the moment he stepped inside the dining room, his son started jumping in his arms.
"Mumma" he raised his hands to go to Myra.
In that one moment, Neil felt some jealousy, his own son was fond of his mother. The moment his eyes lands on her, she becomes centre of his attention
"My baby" she got up to pick him up.
"Have your breakfast." Neil tied Neev in his high chair which was in the middle of his and Myra's dining chairs.
Myra scrunched her nose, rolling her eyes. Whereas her son took out his lower lip to show his disappointment. He also punched his father with his tiny fist but his father was stubborn to its extreme.
Neil settled down on his chair.
"Good Morning baby" Myra kissed his cheeks. Her sweet gesture earned a small giggle from Neev.
He pulled her shirt and nuzzled in her chest when she wrapped her arms around his small figure.
"Are you hungry, my baby?" she asked, caressing his hairs.
"Yayaya" He nodded his head.
Neil was watching them in adore. Their bond was something which always raised questions in his mind but harmony and serenity in his heart.
"I will get Neev's favourite cereal" She again kissed his cheek smiling at him.
'I have never seen her smiling like this.' his heart captured again.
'You always made her cry.' His mind voiced out, guilt feeling engulfed himself.
He was drowned in his thought process, he did not even realise when she went inside to get Neev's food.
Neev was irritated, as his calls to his father were left unanswered.
"Dadda" He screamed loudly this time.
His loud shriek broke Neil's trance. "Yes my baby."
Neev talked to him in his baby language raising his hands.
"What do you want, baby?"
"Boobhboobh" Neil was still clueless.
"He is asking for his elephant." Myra entered and helped her husband to understand.
She brought his soft toy and Neev squealed in happiness.
She started feeding him and telling him some stories. Neil had already finished his breakfast but dialogue exchange in front of him rooted him to his place.
He was smiling looking at two. Both were lost in their own world, least caring about his presence.
But his eyes were capturing Myra's antics when she was telling story to his son. Her eyes were speaking, lips were grinning, fingers were tickling his son earning a loud laugh from him.
This was the best moment of Neil's life.
"No Neev we have to finish this." Myra indicated with wide eyes.
"No No No" Neev shook his head. His tummy was full.
"Little more baby." She raised one more spoon and Neev pushed it back resulting in contents from the spoon falling on Myra's shirt.
"Oops" She smiled sheepishly whereas Neev hid his face behind his palms.
"Neev that's not done. See you spoiled your Mumma's dress."
He got up to help Myra who was looking at him with wide open eyes without a blink.
'He called me Neev's Mumma.'
'Did I hear anything wrong?'
She kept on staring at his face. Feeling her intense gaze, Neil realised what he blurred out a few moments back.
He did not match his eyes with her eyes. But he felt it right.... Absolutely right! He felt a heavy burden go away from his heart.
Myra gaped like a fish but words could not find their voice. She stayed silent recalling recent moments.
"Mumma" Neev was calling her, she was lost.
"Myra" Neil tapped on her hand, she raised her eyes, "your son is calling you from long."
