Chapter 1: Inconclusive
Ameera POV
The city of Chicago had relatively good weather as the sun shone over its inhabitants providing them with warmth and light. The bird song was smothered by the excited hum of the throngs of people that could be seen below. Five stripes of colour lined in more or less a straight line.
The Abnegation in their demure greys. The Amity in their flamboyant reds and yellow. The Candor in their shining whites wth the occasional strip of black, dressed formally as always. The Dauntless darted out of their trains like leapords - forward rolling and forming a queue in front of the vast building while some Amity watched them disapprovingly with pursed lips, shaking their head at their behaviour.
Last but not least is Erudite: we stood in our royal blues, dressed in a proper and overly formal fashion; suits, ties, dress shirts etc. I straightened my shirt and waited impatiently, tapping my foot and fiddling with my sleeve.
Out of the blue, Caleb Prior walked over to me and asked me a very strange question "How is Erudite?"
"What?" I asked, confused by his random question.
"I mean what's it like to be an Erudite."he said.
"Annoying. Everyone is so vain and selfish." I said as I stood in the Erudite queue. "Especially if they're adults, they think they rule the world and petily envy the Abnegation."
He looked at me sceptically.
"I'm being serious Caleb." I said shrugging. He rolled his eyes and left to the Abnegation queue. I noticed a Candor boy bothering a few Abnegation people who were queuing. What's with him and bothering others? I've seen him around with that red haired kid he calls friend and a brown haired bit- girl, sorry.
He was really bothering them and Beatrice tried to get involved but Caleb stopped her. I got involved instead.
"What is your problem mate?" I asked exasperatedly. The Abnegation the Candor was bothering, looked up in surprise but gave me a grateful nod.
"I don't have one, what's yours?" he asked cockily.
"Uh, why are you bothering some guy who's just queuing up and minding his own business, accusing him of lying, when he clearly isn't?"I asked.
"How do you know he isn't?"the guy asked.
"Because I've seen you act like a jerk more than once."I said "You are a pathological liar. Very Candor of you."
He rolled his eyes,
"Why do you care? What's in it for you?" he sneered.
"Some peace from your annoying voice." I said.
"Ameera..." Caleb warned.
"Oh shut up Caleb." I snapped at him.
"Oh look! A stiff and a know it all. Having a lovers spat." the red haired boy taunted making a love heart with his hands.
I slapped at it but before I could respond we were called into the building to listen to our speech.
A woman named Tori did my test after the long Introductory speech. I drank the liquid she gave me and then I was in a hall of mirrors. I saw my hair neatly braided and me wearing a formal blue suit, with my glasses. I didn't really need them.
Alright I lied I do a bit. But if I got Dauntless (which I probably won't) I can manage without them. I was then told to choose between a knife and meat. I frowned and berated myself for being so indecisive.
A dog leapt at me and I closed my eyes as it bounded on top of me. I felt something wet on my face and opened my eyes finding a puppy licking me.
Then the puppy became a dog again, as soon as a girl said puppy. I grabbed at it's tail just and slipped through the ground.
I woke up breathing heavily.
"You're results were inconclusive." Tori said carefully.
"Which means?"I asked a thought desperately clutched at my mind please, please, please don't say I'm...
"You're divergent." She said "Erudite, Amity and Dauntless. Now I've entered Erudite and that's what you tell your parents. Do you understand!"
I nodded. I didn't think I was a monster now, but I didn't like the idea of not fitting in. I used to love it, when I was younger but then I found out what they do to Divergents.
Katrina POV
"Hurry up get out of the chair stiff." the Dauntless woman snapped.
"What is it?" I asked.
"Your result was Divergent." She said.
My eyes widened.
"You're Abnegation, Erudite and Dauntless." she said.
"Tell your parents you got Abnegation. Ok." she asked.
I nodded and left.
Ameera POV
"What was your result?" Ernie asked.
"Erudite." I said.
"You better stay here. You know what the Evans got when their son left." He said. I shrugged "It's my choice father."
"Well..." he said and giving me a mildly threatening look, as his fist clenched. "You better make the right one."
My stomach twisted in disgust and I left demurely after washing the dishes.
Katrina POV
"Hey Katrina!" Caleb called as I walked to the Eaton's house.
"What?" I asked.
He grabbed my hand, regarding me with concern. "You okay? You left early, what was your result?"
"Abnegation." I lied smoothly "And I threw up so I had to leave; allergic reaction."
"You sure you're okay?" he asked worriedly.
"Of course Caleb you worry too much." I laughed. We stood there for a few moments as I waited for him to let go of my hand. "Well?"
"Do you like me?" he blurted.
"What?" I asked frowning.
"You know...like...like, like me." he said.
"Um uh..."I stuttered. I did like him a bit and I found it cute that he cared for me so much and mumbled "I thought you liked that Erudite girl you always ranted about."
"Ameera! No!" Caleb exclaimed, his hand went to move my hair back from my face. "I like you Katrina!"
He leaned down and I began to get on my tip toes.
"Aww look it's that stiff again but he's with another stiff. And they call you a player man. "a red headed Candor said to a tall Candor boy.
"Shut up!" I snapped at him and left to my house my face bright red. Their laughter rang through my ears as I fled and I didn't dare to look back.
