Chapter 7

There were patterns on the ceiling.

Patterns, lines swirling into depictions of angels. Of course, Kit shouldn't have been surprised— everything in the Institute was intricate and designed carefully.

He shifted a bit to look at one of the repeating images- an angel rising over a lake- and winced.

The Institute didn't have carpeted floors, and it was making his current camp-out less luxurious than imagined.

Didn't the Shadowhunters have a rune or something for comfort?

Not one that he had learned yet.

Standing up, he arched his back slightly, and turned around to study the door yet again, for oh... the sixth time in ten minutes. Ty, Ty, Ty. It seemed like Ty was all he thought of in the past few days. While Helen struggled against five Clave officials who eventually wrested her back into the portal to Wrangle Island. While the Blackthorns, with the addition of Emma, Kit, and Cristina got sent back to the L.A. Institute.

While Ty walked briskly to his room the moment they arrived in the foyer, and only came out for meals, where he ate little and didn't speak.  While Max and Rafael played on the floor with Tavvy.

That was the heartbreaking part. Sometimes when they were eating, Tavvy would ask where Livvy was. An then Ty would set down his utensils and silently walk back upstairs.

And when Ty had disappeared to his room for the first time, Kit had dashed after him. However, Ty had a slight advantage, what with the years of Shadowhunter training and runes, and Kit hadn't made it.

He was about to leave after knocking the first seven times, but then he remembered when he first came to the Institute and locked himself up.

And Ty had just sat outside his door with a Sherlock Holmes novel, ready for when he came out. (I had to write that in guys)

So Kit had sat down. And waited.

And waited and waited and waited.

And he was there when Ty finally came out, after two days of neither of them eating.

Kit welcomed the distraction as the memory came.

The door opened, and Kit snapped to attention. Finally. He had been so worried. It had been so long that Kit had wondered if he was even in there anymore.

A dark head of hair popped out, followed by a body. Ty's eyes were facing downwards, and his entire body language seemed to shout: go away.

But of course, Kit wouldn't leave. By the angel, he had just spent two days without eating or sleeping, sitting on the hardwood floors.

Kit followed Ty silently. Ty didn't acknowledge Kit presence, but he didn't shoo him away either, so he supposed that was... good?

Having had only his father for most of his life, Kit didn't know much about personal loss. He had read a few books, he supposed, but you couldn't always trust the content in books, so he liked to enjoy them and then safely ignore their advice.

He wished he had read at least one mental illness book. Then he wouldn't be so useless.

***

"Kit? Can you come downstairs? Something's happened, and we're having a meeting to discuss it."

The familiar voice sent a jolt through his mind, and he turned around quickly. Could it be...?

Oh. It was Dru. The younger Blackthorn's voice had sounded so much like her older's sister's for a moment, he could almost have believed that it was Livvy standing there.

"Well... is it important? I want to stay with Ty."

She looked slightly uncomfortable as she replied, "Yeah, sorry. The new Inquisitor's come to the Institute to talk with Emma and Jules, and the kids are going to talk in the library."

Kit wondered what 'the kids' would accomplish by themselves— after all, their team consisted of Dru and Kit, really. However...

"Hey, Ty." He called through the door. "It's dinner time."

And indeed, the time was close enough as to when they would normally sit in silence around the table. If he was lucky, Ty might buy it.

"What is it? I know it's not dinner."

As Ty sulked through the doorway his grey eyes met Dru's and darkened. "Dru, what's happened?"

"We-we'll go to the kitchen. We can talk there."

Dru quickly hurried off to the other side of the Institute, and Kit took Ty's hand as they walked over to follow.

Once they arrived, Dru wasted no time.

"Okay. So, the newly appointed Inquisitor arrived here to talk to Emma and Jules. He was this super-mysterious guy, and he came here with two guards. I was watching them come from through the window. You know, the one in the attic?"

Ty nodded.

Kit grabbed a cookie.

"Yeah. They didn't even bother knocking. He strode right up, and pushed the doors open. I was lucky I saw them coming in advance, so Jules knew to be in the front."

Kit decided to speak for Ty. "Got it. So, what exactly did he say?"

"Well, he was very... brisk. It was like he had somewhere to be."

"Or maybe, he had just some really good information!" Ty said excitedly, startling them all. He looked to his side, seeking his twin's eyes for confirmation, and the look on his face when she wasn't there crippled Kit.

Kit put his arms around Ty. Nobody had touched him since the room... where it happened. He preferred to stay hidden inside of himself, and got a scared look in his eyes.

But he seemed to be fine now.

"Sooooo..." Dru had a mischievous look in her eyes that Kit didn't like... at all.

"So?" He tried.

"So should we spy on them?" She said in a whisper that was conspiratorial, excited, and rushed all at once.

"I'm not sure if-"

"Sure." Ty's quiet, cool voice spoke up once again. "Where are they?"

"They're in the library. Let's go." And with that, she scurried off, leaving the boys to scramble after her.

A/N: Merci encore for reading! It turns out I have (I think only one) reader in Australia, and also one in the UK. That's pretty cool to me. Now I guess you know that I'm not from either of those places, but I'm not really worried cause that doesn't narrow it down a whole ton.
Are there any Hamilton fans out there? Cause if so, then I really hope you got the 'The Room Where It Happens' reference.
Ugh I said they'd meet in the library and then I said that that's where Emma and Jules went... This is why you go over and edit, children. It's good now though. I didn't publish it like that.
