Chapter 6 - Long-awaited kits
Foxpaw POV
Foxpaw sat outside the Apprentice Den. She knew that Flypounce wouldn't have recovered. It had been three days and she still wasn't looking so good.
"Foxpaw."
She perked up at the sound of her brother, Goosefeather, padding over to her.
"Goosefeather!" Foxpaw ran over to him,"Are you going to be training me today? Please say you are, I really want to train again."
"Yes, Foxpaw, I'm training you until Flypounce gets better." Goosefeather chuckled,"Don't expect any favouritism though."
"I won't!" Foxpaw jumped around him.
"Goosefeather, wait for me!"
Foxpaw smiled as her other older brother, Littlestorm, stumbled over.
"Littlestorm!" Foxpaw rubbed against his legs.
"Hehe, nice to see you too, Foxpaw." Littlestorm smiled.
"Let's go train! Let's go train!" Foxpaw's tail swished back and forth.
Goosefeather lead them out of camp and over to a tree.
"Now, Foxpaw, what can you smell?" Goosefeather asked her.
Foxpaw smelled the air around her and went to dart forward,"Squirrel!"
Littlestorm quickly grabbed her by her scruff and held her in place.
"Calm, Foxpaw, calm." Goosefeather sighed.
"R-right, calm... Sorry." Foxpaw nodded as Littlestorm set her down.
"Littlestorm?" Goosefeather turned to him.
Littlestorm nodded and crawled forward, placing a pile of nuts in front of them.
"Now, that's to lure the squirrel over to us." Goosefeather explained,"Your goal is to run at the squirrel and catch it before it escapes up the tree. Give it a go."
Foxpaw lashed her tail as the squirrel hopped over, begining to chew on the nuts. That's when she darted forward.
The squirrel squeaked and ran to the tree. Foxpaw hurried up the tree after it and grabbed onto the squirrel's tail before falling back to the ground.
"Foxpaw?" Goosefeather hurried forward,"Are you alright?"
Foxpaw shook her pelt, stumbling to her feet with the Squirrel still in her jaws, although still alive.
Goosefeather let out a sigh of relief,"Be careful, Foxpaw. We don't want you getting hurt."
"I will, brother." Foxpaw assured him, breaking the squirrel's neck.
"Goosefeather! Littlestorm!"
All three of them looked up as a bright, ginger blur ran over to them. Tiger.
"Tiger? What's going on?" Goosefeather asked him.
Tiger panted as he came to a stop in front of them,"Mapleheart... She's havin' her kits!"
Littlestorm's eyes widened and he staggered forward, trying to limp back to camp as fast as he could.
"Littlestorm, don't strain yourself." Goosefeather sighed.
"But Mapleheart! I have to be there for her!"
Goosefeather sighed as he pressed himself against Littlestorm.
"We'll do this. Together." Goosefeather assured him.
When they arrived in camp, it seemed like they'd made it just in time as Littlestorm stumbled towards the Medicine Den where Mapleheart lay, her tail curled around herself.
"Mapleheart! Marshriver!" Littlestorm practically collapsed but Mistberry held him up.
"H-here." Mistberry looked aside.
"Oh, thank you." Littlestorm smiled softly.
"Are they here?" Goosefeather asked.
Mapleheart lifted her tail to reveal three small kits. One was a russet, tabby tom. The second was a grey and white, tabby she-cat. And the third was a tortoiseshell tom cat.
"Do they have names, Mapleheart?" Foxpaw tilted her head to the side.
"Venomkit, Bramblekit and Sunkit." Mapleheart purred.
"Wow... Such pretty names." Foxpaw smiled.
Before she went to sleep in the Apprentice Den, Foxpaw made sure Flypounce was alright before she curled up and slept.
