- prologue -
Delilah signs her name on the designated lines, barely reading over the contract Chancellor Ava Paige has set before her. Thomas sits next to her, upset but ultimately supportive of her decision as he keeps a comforting arm wrapped around her shoulders.
"Have you read the document thoroughly?" Ava questions as she sets her pen down. "Do you understand what you're agreeing to?"
"Yes, ma'am," Delilah lies blatantly with a curt nod of her head. "I'm aware of the potential consequences."
The older woman sighs sadly and hands the document over to the Assistant Director, Janson, who's quick to leave the room to get the paperwork finalized. Once he's gone, Ava fixes Delilah with a pleading gaze, her tone far softer than it had been moments prior.
"He isn't going to remember you," she points out, offering a sad smile. "Nor will you remember him."
Delilah stiffens and Thomas squeezes her shoulder in reassurance. The silence looms over them as the severity of her decisions weigh down on her, threatening to suffocate her if she dwells on them for too long.
"I don't care," she eventually says, her resolve hardening. "I can't sit here and watch as he suffers all alone. These trials are breaking him, and whether or not I remember who he is to me, I want- I need to be there for him."
