Chapter 1

Word Count: 869

Heya peeps, this is my first time writing angst. Please give me feedback and don't be afraid to give suggestions!

Hinata stared on, tears pooling in his downcast eyes. He couldn't turn his head away from the towering figure of Tsukishima. The blond had locked gazes with him from across the grassy quad, but lowered his eyes a moment later. Of course the pain affected them both, and it had all been Hinata's fault. He knew deep in his heart that Tsukki was much better off without him, and yet water trailed down his face whenever he thought of his ex-boyfriend. The 'ex' felt like a jab to his chest, pushing the air from his lungs. His fault, all his fault. Only a few months into their relationship and yet Hinata had managed to ruin another thing; only this time it was something more dear to Hinata than anything else.

"H-hey Tsukishima?" Hinata called to his boyfriend timidly. The blond in question lifted his head, throwing a questioning glance at the smaller male.

"What's wrong? You always call me 'Tsukki,'" he mused, voice soft. Hinata was the only person to whom he showed genuine concern and affection. Hinata meant everything to him.

"I-I just don't think this... is working out." The words came slowly, but as soon as the meaning registered, Tsukki grew stiff.

"W-what?" He had hardly ever stuttered before, but Hinata was one of his only weaknesses. "Seriously, what's wrong?" At this point, both males had eyes full of tears, but Tsukki refused to let them fall. He had to divulge the situation before he could become worked up.

"I-I just don't want to be with you anymore!" Hinata shouted, raising his voice at Tsukki for the first time in the past few months. He turned, hiding the trails of tears streaking down his flushed face. "I'm done with this," he spoke harshly, confidence laced into the words but that did little to hide the small hitch in his voice, "with us." He could only hope that Tsukki- no, Tsukishima couldn't see the trembling his entire body was undergoing. With that last statement, he rushed out of the room where Tsukki had been reading, nearly sprinting away. "Hina, just tell me what's wrong!" the lean male called out after his love, desperation clear in his tone. The anguish both could feel tangibly was what pushed Hinata to run faster and further; to someplace where Tsukk- Tsukishima couldn't be hurt by his stupidity any longer. Tsukki stared after Hinata, eyes locked onto his retreating form. He finally allowed his emotions to overwhelm him. He slouched into his seat, fingers reaching to yank at his pale locks. He dropped his head almost to his knees, wishing he could curl up as those with smaller frames could. His eyes were stormy clouds, drenching his pallid features in droplets of salty despair. Oh Hinata, he wondered depressedly, why must opposites attract? He knew that he would, or rather could, never love another. Hinata was as precious to him as sunlight was to flowering sakura trees, one of the few things vital to his existence. And now, like a rainbow after a storm, that sunlight was gone.

Hinata looked away, forcing himself to stare at the pavement instead of the confused and pleading male only a short distance away. If he had still been with the blond, he wouldn't have hesitated to cross that gap with one large leap, to smother his cool boyfriend with hugs and pecks on the cheek. Tsukki would always laugh, eventually giving into the short male and hugging him in return. No! No, I can't think about that, he thought to himself often. So often in fact, that he couldn't think of a single time during the fallout of their relationship where his thoughts hadn't been centered around Tsukishima. He continued walking to his next class, accidentally bumping into a much taller figure, not that many could match Hinata for stature. The imposing, muscular form glared down at him maliciously. Hinata shivered at the hatred in his peer's eyes, but this was a regular occurrence.

"I hope you're enjoying your reward," Kankei spit out venomously, shoving the smaller male's chest backwards. He laughed, sounding like a villain from a classic superhero comic. Hinata sighed, accepting the consequences for being near Tsukishima. This bully was the reason that Hinata could no longer shorten his ex-love's name, though he could never wash away the guilt he felt. He knew that it was all his fault, and Kankei Shadanki was glad to remind him of that very fact every time they crossed paths. "He's been much happier with us than with you, scum," Kankei puffed out snootily. Hinata nodded, pools forming in his eyes once again. He dipped his head, pushing past Kankei. The upperclassman only wanted to see the fragile break, so he had no qualms about letting the shattered boy pass.

His chuckle was seared into the wing spiker's mind, appearing each night to haunt him. He's better without me, he reminded himself, feeling his control over his tear ducts loosen. He strode into his class, taking a seat for a long lecture and hiding his salt-ridden face in his loose hoodie sleeves; hoodies he had started to wear constantly after his forced breakup. A long lecture indeed.
