Chapter 23
Kayla Wilson
The school grounds were decorated with lights and there were different booths being prepared by the students.
"Hey, when is the other bunch of kids coming?" Liam asked.
"They’d be coming soon, I guess." Melissa replied, taking the banner out of the box that they brought for the decorations.
"There are a lot of people participating in the event right? I never expected almost the whole school to come and help," I said, looking at the crowds in different areas of the huge field.
"I can say with absolute assurance that half of them are here because of detention." Zach chuckled.
The whole field had different booths set up. Zach and his friends were putting up a stall for games related to science.
Melissa and I together had planned to set up a stall to show different simple chemical reactions and easy life hacks people can do in daily life.
Other different stalls were set up for food and information too.
I pulled my phone out when it started to ring. My eyes lit up when I saw the caller ID.
"Hey, what's up?" I asked as soon I picked up the call.
"Foxie, I've missed you so much." Nico answered from the other end of the line
"I’ve missed you too," I replied, my memories jogging back to the past, to the times we hung out all the time.
"Well, I have some good news and bad news. I called to tell you that I'm coming today. I got the chance to come to the science fair. But they are coming too." He whispered the last part in a grave voice.
My mood did a sudden 180 degree. I had gotten so excited about Nico’s arrival and then the bad news stumped me. I saw Zach giving me a sideways look and I knew he had noticed that my mood changed.
"Well, I'm still happy that you are coming." I softly replied.
" Foxie, are you gonna be okay?" Nico asked worriedly. Nico was constantly worrying about me. He would always be by my side at school and was reluctant to leave when we had different classes.
"Yeah, I’ll be fine. Don’t worry about me. I'm not alone anymore. Oh, I also have something huge to tell you." I forced a smile on my face. I hadn't told Nico about dating Zach. I knew he would be happy for me.
"I’ll see you in a few hours then. Bye, foxie." I heard the smile in his voice.
I sighed, putting my phone back in my pocket and went back to working.
"What was all that about?" Melissa asked curiously.
"Nico is joining the science fair. He called to tell me that he’s coming," I told her with a smile.
"Oh, that's great."
I nodded and we both got busy setting up the place.

After a few hours, we all sat on a nearby bench to get some rest and quench our thirst before the event officially started. The place looked astounding with all the decorations and lights all over the place. We had all finished preparing our respective booths and what's remaining was some last minute touch ups to be ready for the fair.
Nico had also come a while ago and had started helping out as soon as he came to finish the work faster. We kept the catching up for later so that we could enjoy more after finishing the science fair. He had just left to change since he had come straight to the school after arriving. When Nico came, I noticed that Zach became very tense and they both were stiff when they greeted each other.
"When is Nico leaving?" Zach suddenly asked.
"I don't know Zach. I'm just hoping he’d stay for a few days." I stood up to throw my empty coffee cup into the trash can.
"Why? I mean you have me to hang out with," Zach pouted.
"Yes, but I’d like to spend some time with my best friend too,” I laughed, seeing the look on his face. “We don't see each other much now. I miss him a lot. He was always there for me before and I can’t ever repay him. He means a lot to me.”
"I know, I know. I just thought I was your best friend," Zach muttered under his breath.
“You're my best boyfriend." I sat on Zach's lap and hooked my arms around his neck, placing a quick kiss on his lips.
"Mhm. I could get used to this. You always taking initiative. It's a turn on." Zach said, softly kissing my cheek. I could feel heat pass through me and a shiver ran down my spine with his soft strokes on my cheeks.
"Guys, we’re in a public place so please keep it PG." The moment was broken with Liam's voice next to us.
Melissa slapped Liam's arm before dragging him away while apologizing to us.
"That went well. We always get interrupted one way or another." Zach sighed.
"Liam is right. This is a public place. We can't get carried away. But we could go somewhere private and spend time together sometime, without any interruptions. What do you think?" I asked, desperately wanting to spend time with Zach alone. My feelings for him were growing by each passing day. I knew I loved Zach. It was scary, admitting it and accepting that I could love him, with everything I had been through. It also scared me to wonder if he loved me back. Or even if he could truly love someone like me. With my insecurities it was ten times worse.
"I can't wait to spend some alone time with you." He agreed and kissed me.
After some time we went and joined Melissa and Liam to continue our work.
By 3pm everything was ready and people started to show up to the science fair. Different age groups were around different stalls, participating in the games or activities laid out by the students.
We demonstrated a lot of easy life hacks and got a lot of support and money for the fundraising.
Everyone seemed to be enoying. I looked over at where Zach was, and saw him finishing up with a group of kids. After they had left, he glanced at me as if sensing my stare and gave me a thumbs up and a smile before turning back to a boy who had approached their stall. My heart warmed up by his small gestures and I couldn't help but keep staring at him.
"You love him don't you?" Melissa said, following my gaze.
"Yeah, it's just so different and special. I know he’s the one for me." I replied with a small smile.
Melissa gave a pat on my shoulder. "You have to tell him then."
I nodded and before I could say anything, we were again engulfed by another wave of kids.
After a very successful evening, we all packed up and loaded the cars with our belongings. I was heading towards Zach's car when a voice made me stop in my tracks.
"Kayla? Is that you?"
I turned around to see the face I once enjoyed looking at. The person who I trusted once and held high hopes to help me. The person who left me when I needed him the most. The person who broke me more when I was already down.
"Jake?"
