Chapter 2

Zachery Williams
I stood near the bonfire taking the occasional sip from my drink. It was the end of the summer holidays so my friends and I threw a bonfire party to celebrate it.

"Zach, we need more beer. It's in the back of my truck. Go get it." My best friend Liam called out over the loud music. The truck was parked near the cafe' which was owned by Liam's brother Jack. He is also like a brother to me who is really funny and cool.

My parents were really close with Liam's parents. That's how Liam and I became best friends. Liam has an older while I had a little sister. My mom was a cardiologist and my dad was a professional photographer. I had the perfect family and I couldn't be happier.

"Zach, wait for me." A drunken Lydia came towards me. She was walking like she was taking her first steps with the high heels. Lydia is someone I know from my childhood. She was a sweet innocent girl back then but now I only see a girl who wears tight clothes which seem too small for her

"You okay? How much did you drink?" I asked holding her up.

"Three bottle. No, I think four." She said counting from her fingers and letting out a giggle.

"You should go home now. I'll drive you. Just let me take this to Liam." I said grabbing a box from the truck. Lydia stood here talking to herself and giggling at nothing.

I rushed back to the party and looked around to find Liam. People were dancing everywhere grinding their bodies against each other. Some people were heavily making out while others were drinking their ass off and playing various games. Liam was dancing with his girlfriend, Melissa. She is a nice girl who keeps Liam on a leash. She is like a sister who I'm very protective of.

"Dude, I'm borrowing your truck. Have to drive Lydia home." I told him before waving at Melissa. He gave me a nod and turned back to dancing.

I went back to the truck where Lydia was lying down on the ground. Her blond hair was a mess and her dress was covered with sand. I pulled her up and held her in my arms when a soft sob made me look at Lydia. She was still mumbling and laughing on her own. I looked around to see if anyone was around but I couldn't see clearly in the dark.

"Shh, I think I heard something over there." Lydia slurred a bit loudly.

"Wait here, I'm going to check it out." I made her sit in the passenger seat before leaving to find where the sound was coming from. After walking for 5 minutes, I came to the seashore where the air was fresh. I was surprised to see a girl walking away alone at a time like this.

'That must be the girl who was here a few minutes ago.' I thought as I tried to recognize her. Suddenly she turned around our eyes meeting for a brief second. The girl was wearing a green top with a black skinny jeans and a black jacket. Her long hair was blowing with the wind like smooth threads. She looked at for a minute before turning around and walking away.

I was about to go back when something caught my eye. It was a silver necklace. I looked at the direction the girl went but she was long gone. I put the necklace inside my jean pocket before strolling back to the truck. I opened the driver's seat and slid inside to see Lydia fast asleep with her mouth opened a bit. I chuckled to myself before driving to Lydia's house.

Lydia's house wasn't far from mine in fact we both are just a few blocks away and that's how we were childhood friends. Within 30 minutes I was parking the truck in front of the house. I opened the passenger seat and pulled Lydia out of the truck. I wrapped my arms around her and walked to the front door holding her close to me. I rang the doorbell twice and waited for her parents to open the door.

"Hey Mrs. Hastings, I brought Lydia home." I said with a smile as Lydia's mom opened the door.

"Thank you so much Zach." She replied with a smile taking Lydia inside.

"Um, she drank a lot so she might have a dreadful headache tomorrow. Good night then." I said with a small wave and hopped back inside the truck and drove away to my house. I was in no mood to go back to the party to return the truck to Liam. I parked the truck in front of my house and slid out of it. The air was cold and the street was empty. I walked slowly to the front door of my house and unlocked it. The lights were switched off proving that my parents were fast asleep in their room. I quietly went upstairs to the room next to mine. I opened the door to five year old sister Lucy's room. Lucy was sleeping soundly which made me smile. She looks a lot like mom with brown hair and brown eyes. In my case I look like my dad with black hair and grey eyes. Lucy started mumbling something in her sleep and tossed around in her bed. I laughed a bit before kissing her forehead and whispering good night to her.

I went to my room and changed into a tracksuit PJ and flopped onto my bed. My thoughts wandered to the girl I saw at the beach. I couldn't see her face so I didn't know who she was. The only thing of hers was the necklace I had with me. I took it out from the pocket and looked at it carefully to find out any information about the owner. It was just a plain necklace with a star as a pendent.

"Who was she? What was she even doing there all alone?" I whispered to myself.

People might think I'm the bad boy, or the jock, or maybe the popular kid who gets all the ladies. I'm just a simple guy with average popularity and a simple life. I have never faced any complications in life and I don't think I ever will. The word complicated is not in my dictionary. I don't even know why people make a big fuss out of nothing. It always seemed pathetic to me. I was snapped out of my thoughts when my phone rang.

"Hey, man where you are at?" Liam's voice came from the other end of the line.

"I'm at home. I can't come back to the party." I said with a sigh.

"What the fuck dude? What about my truck?" He yelled

"I parked it in front of your house. I'm too lazy to take it back buddy." I answered softly.

"You are such a party pooper!" Liam whined. "Whatever, I'm just going to crash at Jack's place. Adios mate."

I chuckled after hanging up the phone. Liam can be a drama queen sometimes. I closed my eyes, drifting off to sleep as my thoughts flew to the past reminding me of the fun times I spent with Liam.

********************************

"Hey Liam, wait up." I called out to my 15 year old best friend who was about to jump out of the school window in the empty classroom.

"If you can just move your legs a bit faster, that would be very helpful." Liam whisper yelled at me before looking around to see if anybody was around to see us sneaking out.

Apparently we were running away after 'decorating' the principal's office. The wall of the office was painted with pink color and was doodled all over. We threw the trash on the floor and made a mess out of the place before escaping from the room without anybody noticing us.

"Jump dude. We don't have much time left before he goes on rampage." I hissed at Liam as the bell rang warning us. Liam jumped landing on the soft grass with a soft thud with a dramatic yell. I jumped after him and we both dashed out of the school laughing.

"That was totally awesome. We killed it out there." Liam cried out when we stopped in front of jack's café. I nodded my head in agreement and entered the café' with Liam behind me.

"We should have stayed for a bit to see his expression. It would have been priceless. I bet he would scream like an old lady." Liam said his eyes twinkling with mischief.

"Are you sure we won't get into trouble?" I asked him as we ordered and sat in the corner of the café.

"Don't worry. If I'm with you, I can assure you that there would not be anything to be worried about." He answered grinning like an idiot. And the next day we both were suspended from school for a week.

********************************

"Zach, wake up. Come on, mommy said you won't get any breakfast if you don't get up." I opened my eyes to see Lucy jumping on my bed. I gave a small smile to her and got up from the bed. I grabbed her and started tickling her. Lucy was laughing and yelling me to stop.

"Princess, you woke me so you deserve this punishment. The tickle monster is here." I replied imitating a scary voice.

"Zach, you'll be late for school. You should go get ready." My dad said poking his head inside my room. Lucy took the chance to run away from me before sticking out her tongue at me.

I took a quick shower and got ready in about 15 minutes, grabbing my backpack I dashed downstairs to see my mom waiting for me at the table.

I ate my breakfast quickly grabbing an apple before leaving.

I had only 10 minutes to reach school on time. I got into my black Mustang car and drove to school.

In five minutes I was in the school parking lot. After parking my car I hurried to get to my locker when I bumped into someone. It was a girl wearing a baggy T-shirt, and ripped jeans with sneakers. She was on the ground picking her books up. I crouched to her level and started helping her.

"I'm really sorry. I wasn't looking where I was going." I apologized glancing at her. Her grey- greenish eyes stared at me with a blank expression.

"It's okay. Apology accepted." The girl whispered before turning to leave.

"I'm Zach. What's your name?" I asked walking towards the classroom. Before she could say anything the bell rang. The girl gave me a small nod and went to the receptions desk with light footsteps. I went to my class and sat at the back of the class.

"Hey Zach, who was the girl you were talking just now?" Liam questioned sitting next to me.

"Didn't get her name, I accidentally bumped into her." I answered with a shrug.

"I heard many rumors about her. Her name was, I think Kaylin." Lydia interrupted flipping her hair to the side.

Melissa slid to the seat in front of Liam before kissing his cheek. "Her name is Kayla." She said before turning her attention to our homeroom teacher Mr. Argent.

The periods before lunch went like a breeze. At lunch time, me and my friends grabbed our food and sat on our usual table talking about how our holidays went.

"I'm telling you, that kid was glaring at me like I was some kind of a criminal. I mean it wasn't my fault that his sand castle was destroyed. It was a beach ball. It should be guilty right? And then his family came and they were giving me death glares. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time." Sam was explaining about his little incident of last week at the beach.

"So what did you do? Did you run like a chicken, screaming like a girl?" Andy mocked enjoying Sam's discomfort.

"What else was I supposed to do? I just ran and ran while the whole family was chasing me. The day was ruined because of a kid, seriously one of the most horrible experiences." Sam muttered stabbing his food. We all laughed at his immature acts and joked about it.

I was eating my fries when I spotted Kayla sitting alone at the corner table. Everyone was giving her a disgusted look while she was looking down ignoring all the stares.

"I heard that stupid bitch killed her own mom. Can you imagine?" Lydia suddenly announced looking at Kayla.

"How do you even know that? Kayla doesn't seem the type to hurt anyone." Melissa replied taking a bite from her burger.

"Looks can be deceiving don't you think? I guess she is really a good actor to pull that innocent face. Anyways her own sister admitted that Kayla was the one who killed her mom. She goes to the same collage as my sister. I'm just going to welcome her to school." She sneered walking to the table where Kayla sat leaving all of us in shock.
