Chapter 15

Kayla Wilson

On Sunday morning I woke up and hurried to make breakfast for the twins before I had to see Nico off at the Airport. As I was making breakfast, dad came downstairs. He seemed to be in a good mood.

"Hey, kids," he said to the twins.

"Dad, did you get a job yet?" Tina asked hopefully.

"Yes, I start tomorrow," he smiled at her.

"That's good, dad," I said, feeling relieved. I was getting worried about our financial situation.

He gave me a curt nod and sat down for breakfast. As I placed plates in front of him and the twins, my phone beeped with a new message.

'Hey, you ready yet? Don't be late, I have to be at the Airport in an hour." Nico's message said.

I quickly went upstairs get dressed. We had decided that I would walk to the motel that Nico was staying in and that we would get a taxi to the Airport. Nico had initially claimed that he'd go alone, since I'd have to come back alone after dropping him off. But I insisted and he had to relent.

While getting dressed, my thoughts wandered to Zach. I hadn't seen him since the day he showed up at my house with Lucy. It had been 4 days since then, and he didn't go to school on Thursday. He texted me saying that he had to take care of Lucy and his mom. I could tell that he cared a lot about them. After I had calmed him down the day he came to my house, he had suddenly realized that he shouldn't have left his mom alone. He was too worried about Lucy at that moment that he did what he thought was best for her. He was worried sick that she might do something to hurt herself, at the state she was in. He had left with Lucy not long after that, and messaged me later that night saying that his mom was feeling better than before.

Grabbing my phone and keys, I ran down the stairs.

"Where are you going?" Dad asked as I walked towards the front door.

"I'm going to drop Nico off at the Airport."

"Don't be out too late. I have to go out at noon and someone has to be there to watch the twins," he said.

Nodding my head, I stepped out of the house and started walking to the motel.

"I wish I could stay longer than this, but since my school starts tomorrow, I don't really have a choice," Nico said with a frown.

"I know, me too. When will I see you again? Promise to call me every now and then, okay?"

"Of course I will. I'll visit you again, the next time I get a holiday. You could visit me too, you know," he said hopefully.

"I can't, you know I have to take care of the twins. Plus, I don't want to run into anyone I used to know. It would be too stressful. Specially not Jake." I rolled my eyes.

"You haven't met him yet after everything that happened, right?" he asked.

"Yeah, and I don't plan on meeting him either," I said in a bored tone.

"Is it because Zach's there now?" he teased.

"Pfft, no," I scoffed.

"Sure, sure," he looked at his watch. "Ugh, I gotta go. I'm gonna miss you so much foxie. Don't get into too much trouble okay?" He hugged me tight.

"I'm gonna miss you too," I hugged him back, fighting tears.

"Don't worry, you're gonna be fine. You were doing fine even before I came to visit you, right?" he said softly.

I nodded and looked up to meet his eyes. "Bye, Nico."

He turned away and took a few steps, but then, turned towards me again. Before I could say anything, he kissed my forehead and then he was gone into the crowd.

It took me a few moments to snap out of the daze he left me in. I slowly touched the spot where his lips touched me and wondered what that was about. He was not the type to be that affectionate. The most he does is hug me, and even that wasn't very often.

Shaking my head, I walked outside and hailed a cab.

***************

When I walked in, dad was sitting on the couch, watching a movie with the twins. Seeing me, he stood up and grabbed his wallet from the table.

"Here's for lunch, you can take the twins out today," he handed me a few dollars.

"Thanks, dad. Okay guys, go get ready. We're going out for lunch."

Tina and Tulio ran upstairs to get ready and dad left, leaving me alone in the living room. It was unusual for dad to give me money, let alone talk to me so civilly. But I wasn't one to complain. Maybe things were getting better after all.

We went to a small diner nearby our place and ordered lunch. The twins were having fun. They were not used to going out for food. I was lost in my thoughts when someone tapped me on the shoulder.

"Hey, Kayla. Mind if I joined you?" Melissa was standing near our table.

"Hey, no, of course not." I smiled and scooted to give her space.

"And who are these?" she smiled at the twins, sliding into her seat.

"I'm Tulio and this is Tina," he gave her a toothy grin.

"I'm Melissa. Nice to meet you guys." She called for a waitress and ordered her lunch.

"So, what are you doing here alone?" I asked her, confused.

"I was supposed to meet up with Liam here, but he hasn't showed up. He isn't even picking up his phone," she sounded disappointed.

"Oh, maybe something came up," I said in an attempt to cheer her up.

"Who's Liam?" Tina interrupted

"He's my prince charming," Melissa winked at her.

"You could have just said that he's your boyfriend, I'm not stupid," Tina said flatly.

Melissa burst out laughing. "Well, aren't you smart?"

"Yeah, I'm the smart one, and he's the stupid one," Tina pointed at Tulio.

"Hey, I'm smart too. I know that Kayla's got a boyfriend," he said, puffing up his chest.

"I've got a what now?" I quirked an eyebrow.

"A boyfriend," he said slowly.

"Yeah, it's Nico, right?" Tina asked.

"No, you idiot. It's Zach," Tulio rolled his eyes.

"Wait wait wait, what's going on here? Who says I have a boyfriend?" I was completely in the dark.

"I saw you giving him a kiss the other day when he came over," Tulio said with a mischievous grin.

"Whoa, when did this happen?" Melissa's eyes widened with excitement.

"What- Were you spying on me?" I asked incredulously.

"No, I just happened to see it," he said smugly.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Tina smacked Tulio's arm.

"You don't have to know everything," he rubbed his arm and glared at her.

Before anyone could say anything else, the waitress came with our food.

"So, is he your boyfriend?" Melissa asked curiously as we dug in.

"No, he's not. We're just friends."

"I know a lot of people who say that and later end up being a couple," she raised an eyebrow. "Liam and I used to say that about each other too."

"Well, I actually don't know what's going on between us right now," I said, lowering my tone so that the twins wouldn't hear.

"I have a feeling that Zach really likes you. He has dated others before, but I've never seen him act like this with anyone else."

"Did Zach say anything to you about me?" I asked.

"What? No. What gave you that idea?" she laughed nervously.

"You're really bad at lying, you know that?" I asked, suppressing a smile.

"I know," she sighed.

"So? Are you gonna tell me what he said?"

"No way. I can't say anything now," she said with a wink.

"Fine. Anyway, he asked me out on a date the night we hung out," I said.

"That's great. When are you guys planning on going then?" she seemed excited.

"I don't know yet. He's going through some stuff right now so maybe after a few days," I shrugged. I never knew how nice it was to actually have a friend who's a girl.

"Make sure to tell me beforehand okay? I'm gonna help you pick out an outfit and I wanna do your makeup too." She squealed and clapped her hands. "I can't wait."

"You would do that for me?" I asked, surprised. We weren't exactly that close. In fact, this was the first time that we were both having a conversation without the guys.

"Of course, you're my friend. And I don't really have a girl friend that I'm really close with. It gets tiring to hang out with guys after a while," she said, taking a bite.

"Thanks, Mel. It means a lot to me. But aren't you bothered about all these rumors that keep spreading about me?"

"Honestly, no I'm not. I don't believe rumors. I only believe what the actual person has to say," she said nonchalantly.

"You don't know how good it is to hear you say that," I smiled gratefully at her.

"I'm sure you'll tell me when, and if, you want to tell me. I'm not gonna judge you on anything anyone else says about you." She looked at me.

"Yeah, thanks. You're one of the only decent people I've met here," I said honestly.

After eating and paying the bill, we walked out of the diner.

"Bye guys, it was really nice meeting you. Maybe we'll meet again," Melissa said to the twins.

"Yeah, you're cool," Tina said.

"And pretty," Tulio chimed in.

"Thanks," she chuckled. "Bye Kayla. See you tomorrow." She hugged me and left.

"Let's head home now," I said to the twins and we started walking back home.
