Hunt
Daryl came back with his brother, and they got a whole bunch of animal meat, much that Florence was glad she didn't see the animals die, she could eat meat, she liked eating meat but she hated seeing the animal die. She gave Daryl some time to settle down before she was ready to approach him.
"What is it, Florence?" He questioned, barely glancing at her, she gave a light smirk, before becoming nervous. He sighed, placing his crossbow down and raised an eyebrow.
"I want you to teach me to hunt, please."
"Walkers?"
"No, I know how to do that. I mean animals. I highly doubt this group is going to stick together forever and so I need to know how to kill animals. Please." The girl had her spear at her side, and a knife in her belt.
"Fine. We're gonna be a couple of days, get your shit and let's go." Florence nodded and grabbed a bag with hardly anything in it. Grabbed a couple of clothes, socks and shoes. She grabbed her spear which she had fixed and a hunting dagger. Florence informed Mason that she would be going for a couple of days, he gave her a big hug and stepped aside to let her go with the youngest Dixon.
Daryl carried his crossbow, walking by her side, not saying much until he saw a turkey.
"You know how to use one of these?" She glanced at the crossbow in his hands, Florence shook her head, he nodded and handed her the weapon. Daryl corrected her stance, fixed her arm posture and instructed her where to look.
"Put your finger there and-" Florence cut him off as she released the arrow, she shot the turkey and stared at the situation shocked. Daryl stared at her just as surprised, he nodded proudly and grabbed the crossbow from her hand.
Florence made a fire, flinching as Daryl chopped the head off, she finished getting the fire ready and then started helping Daryl pluck the bird and prepare it for eating. They sat by the fire, eating the meat, both still not having said anything.
"Why are you down here? Clearly, you ain't from the States." Daryl tried to not be a jerk, he knew that something bad happened when he found her.
"It was my dad's birthday, we had a road trip down from Ottawa down to here. We had this cabin in the woods, isolated by the fourth day this shit started and we had to fight these men who tried killing us." Daryl nodded, finished off and gave a smirk to the girl.
"Guessing you don't know how to use a gun then." The girl shook her head, sighing lightly and gave a frown.
"Would you really want to use one?"
"Might be useful eventually."
"If I survive that long, then I'll learn how to use it."
"How old are you and our brother?" Daryl questioned, she smiled fondly and stared at the fire as it danced around.
"I'm 25 and he's 16." Florence shook her head, her mind going elsewhere, Daryl dropped the subject and stood up.
"Gonna take a leak, be on the lookout." Florence stood up holding her spear in her hand and waited for him to get back. Florence laid down once he was back, she stared at the stars and smiled seeing them all. Daryl watched her for a moment, put out the fire and sat on the log.
"Get some sleep, we'll take turns in shifts.."
The next couple of days, Daryl taught her more tricks, she learned quickly despite feeling bad for having to kill cute little animals. Daryl kept his patience, not yelling at her when she hesitated or flinched once she killed the animal.
Florence took her jacket off, wrapped it around her waist and glanced at Daryl as he stared at her heart locket. They were making their way back to camp, having been tracking a deer for miles. Daryl took the choice of saying it was enough for her and could see she was getting overwhelmed by constant killing.
"Got a boyfriend back in Canada?"
"No, my baby sister gave it to me. It's got the entire family, mum and dad in one half and my siblings in the other half." Florence explained, Daryl grabbed his crossbow and shot a deer twice Florence jumped seeing everyone staring at her with weapons pointed. Daryl gave the same reaction and began ranting as he saw that a walker ate the deer.
Florence followed Daryl, she placed the animals down with the rest of his stuff and watched as he called out for Merle but the meaner redneck hadn't come out. Florence watched carefully as Shane called out for him, she crossed her arms across her chest and waited to see what would happen.
"'Bout what?"
"There was a problem in Atlanta." Despite Florence not liking Merle, it still was hard to hear, did Daryl lose his brother? Even if no one liked the older redneck, he still was Daryl's family.
"He dead?"
"We're not sure."
"He either is, or he ain't!" Florence bit her lip, she watched nervously as he got angrier, a new man stepped into the circle, trying to break the line no one wanted to cross.
"No easy way to say this, so I'll just say it."
"Who are you?"
"Rick Grimes." Florence stepped closer as Daryl approached Rick, trying to intimidate the man and make him just say what needed to be said.
"Rick Grimes, you got something you want to tell me?"
"Your brother was a danger to us all." Florence knew it was true, she knew Daryl knew he was an ass, however, she thought it was stupid of Rick to be saying this to Daryl who didn't know the life status of his brother.
"So, I handcuffed him on a roof, hooked to a piece of metal. He's still there." Rick tried to keep his voice calm but it held authority, Florence placed her hands on her face, shaking her head as Daryl began mouthing off.
"Hold on, let me process this. You're saying you handcuffed my brother to a roof, and you left him there!" Florence moved her hands to her ears, jumping as Daryl shouted at the new man in the little community.
"Yeah." Shane tackled Daryl to the ground as he lunged at Rick, she watched in horror as Shane had Daryl in a chokehold, Rick crouched down to his level and started speaking. Shane let Daryl go, the girl slowly removed her hands from her ears and took a breath.
"Just tell me where he is. so's I can go get him."
"He'll show you, isn't that right?" Lori questioned staring at Rick, who nodded and went to his tent. Florence stood by Daryl's side, telling him that she would come with him.
"So, that's it, you're gonna risk your life for a douchebag like Merle Dixon?" Shane asked Rick, the girl glared at Shane, shaking her head and glanced at Daryl.
"Hey, choose your words more carefully."
"No, I did. Douchebag's what I meant."
"Okay, stop," Florence said, standing in front of Shane, staring up at him with a glare.
"Look, I get that Merle isn't everyone's favourite person but he's still a person and he's Daryl's family. So, get that dictator to look off your face and stop being a fucking dick."
"Be quiet, girl, you're lucky we let you and your brother into this camp. You've barely been here, we'll gladly let you go." Florence closed her mouth, stumbling as Shane pushed her aside to talk with Rick.
"Merle Dixon wouldn't give you a glass of water if you were dying of thirst."
"What he would or wouldn't do doesn't interest me. I can't let a man die of thirst, me. Thirst and exposure. We left him like an animal caught in a trap. That's no way for anything to die, let alone a human being."
"So you and Daryl, that's your big plan?" Lori questioned, Rick saw Florence holding her gear and pointed to her.
"And this young lady."
"No, she ain't going," Daryl stated, the girl looked at him surprised but shook her head and walked back to her tent. She placed her stuff in her tent, looking to see Mason pop his head into the open entrance.
"Are you okay?" Mason questioned, the girl nodded and took a breath.
"Everyone's down at the quarry, come with." The girl nodded and walked over. She stood in the water by the girls who were washing, she sat beside them and helped clean. Florence felt strongly about doing 'female' chores while the men screwed around, her eyes drifted to Ed who watched Carol intently. The younger girl smiled at Carol and squeezed the water from the clothes into the water.
"I do miss my Maytag," Carol complained, Florence chuckled lightly and looked at the others as they spoke about what they missed.
"I miss my Benz, my sat-nav" Andrea stated fondly.
"I miss my coffeemaker, with that dual drip filter and built-in grinder, honey." Jacqui grinned at the memory of her coffeemaker.
"My computer... and texting."
"I miss the AC and the ability to bake nice treats," Florence whispered.
"I miss my vibrator." Florence snickered in surprise, she turned to Carol who glanced around to make sure no one was watching.
"Me too." All the girls laughed loudly, it slowly died down as Ed approached.
