Chapter 17

"No!" Gold screams out. I watch as two rats restrain her on the table and inject her with something. I walk over and softly pet her as her eyes close and she falls asleep. One of the rats throws the needle into a trashcan and walks back over to us.
"We didn't want to sedate her, but to do what we're doing, we have to," she says as she grabs another needle off the table, this one glowing yellow like when we teleport, it's most likely energy to help Gold heal. The nurse swabs a patch of Gold's skin on her belly and injects the serum. The bright yellow liquid goes into Gold, glowing for a minute before becoming invisible outside of her skin.
"It should help her regain her energy faster," the rat says as she hands the other the needle. He throws the needle away and walks back to Gold, softly patting her on the head. Gold stirs a little when he pats her head but doesn't wake up, scaring us all for a second because she'll most likely be in a really bad mood when she first wakes up.
When it's clear that she isn't going to wake up just yet, the nurse let's out a sigh and walks over to the counter, picking up a clipboard and jotting some things down on it while he studies Gold. The other nurse occasionally adds something, almost waking Gold by swinging the clipboard really close to her face.
"We'll have her walk back to your room when she wakes up," he says to us after a minute. I nod and look over at Bree, who's face looks pale. I grab her hand and squeeze it reassuringly. She smiles softly and we walk out of the room when the two nurses tells us that we can leave.
"Want to go get some dinner?" Bree asks softly. I nod and she pulls me to the kitchens where she asks one of the chefs to whip up some food for us. The big dinner the queen has Is apparently not an everyday thing and is only really for special occasions.
The chef sets down two plates of lasagna in front of us and I pull out some money from the small bag, handing it to the chef. They take the money happily and shove it into their pocket before going back to cooking.
I take a bite of the lasagne and moan at the taste. It's absolutely perfect and I refrain from shoveling all of it into my mouth, instead savoring it and talking with Bree while we eat. The chef comes back with a paper bag and sets it on the counter when I'm halfway done with my lasagna.
"For your lion friend," they say before walking back to the kitchen. I set down my fork and open the bag, peering in and seeing a bunch of pieces of steak inside. I show Bree before closing the bag and picking up my fork, stabbing it into the delicious lasagna.
We finish and one of the other chefs comes and takes the plates from us, walking back into the kitchen with them. The chef sets down some strawberries and chocolate frosting and then leaves again. I take a strawberry and dip it in the frosting, taking a bite of the amazing sweet.
"These are the best strawberries I've ever had," Bree comments as the chef walks near us. I see the chef grin broadly and skip back to the kitchen. I take another strawberry and we eat until we absolutely cannot eat anymore.
"I'm so full," Bree groans. I laugh and help her up off the chair, waving to the chef as we walk out of the room. I take her hand in mine and we walk through the hallways, having decided while we were eating that we should go stargazing at the top of the hill.
"Only a few days left here," Bree says to me. I nod and look at one of the gerbils running by, trying to balance a bunch of sandwiches on a really small plate. They dodge the other rodents expertly, not one of the sandwiches falling off the plate.
Bree pulls me outside and we walk over to the beautiful hill that's covered in flowers. We walk up the stone pathway and get to the top where the sun is starting to set, the oranges, reds, and yellow illuminating the sky and making the clouds look like different colored cotton candy.
We sit down on the grass and I lean my head against Bree's shoulder sighing softly as I watch the rodents walk around on the streets below. They go about their days as the sun goes down, the way they end the day looking so much different than any of the other kingdoms.
"I think I'm going to miss going to all these kingdoms," I mumble softly. Bree looks over at me sadly and kisses me on the forehead. The sun finally goes down and the stars start to show in the inky black darkness of the universe.
I move my head off of Bree's head and lay back on the grass, looking up at the stars. She lays down beside me and we stare up at the stars. The sounds of people in the town start to die down as they go back to their houses for the night.
Some kids are playing a game on the streets where they throw mud at one another. After a few minutes an adult comes out of one of the houses and ushers the kids in, shaking their head as the little mice track muddy footprints everywhere.
"Do you think we'll come back? " I ask Bree. She turns over and rests her head on her hand as she looks at me. She ponders the idea for a while, her nose scrunching up and looking absolutely adorable, making me want to kiss her but I don't want to ruin her concentration so I stay where I am.
"I sure hope so," she says softly. I lean forward and softly capture her lips in mine, relishing the way that her's move in perfect sync. She pulls back and smiles at me, kissing me on the forehead before laying down on my stomach.
I hear footsteps behind us and a weight sit down. I look up and see that Gold is lying near us, looking down at the city. When she looks over at us I wave her over, her walking over and lying down at my feet. I grab the steak in the paper bag and take it out, giving it to Gold so she can eat.
She happily munches on the steak, looking up at us occasionally as she eats. Bree starts humming to a song that I don't know and I listen as her humming breaks through the quiet of the night. She switches to a song I do know after a while and I hum along with her, Gold looking up at us from where she's resting at my feet.
We stop humming after a while and just sit there in silence, perfectly content.
