Chapter 14
"It's so pretty," Bree exclaims as we walk into the gardens. There's a whole different feel, a more magical feel, being here before the sun sets and the whole garden is illuminated by a soft golden glow. We walk over to the picnic basket and I lay out a blanket for the two of us to sit on while we eat.
I sit down beside Bree and open the picnic basket, offering her a sandwich. She nods and I take one out, handing it to her. She takes a bite and moans, telling me how good the sandwiches are. I grab one out for myself and take a bite of it, realizing that she's right, these sandwiches are really good.
I manage to finish three of the absolutely delicious sandwiches while Bree eats four of them. I start taking out some strawberries and chocolate icing as the sun starts to go down. Bree leans her head on my shoulder and sighs as we watch the sunset.
"It's so beautiful," she says. I nod, watching her as she watches the sunset. The sun finally goes down and fairy lights string up around the garden turn on. Bree lifts her head off my shoulder and looks up at the fairy lights in awe.
I take a strawberry out of the container and dip it into chocolate icing before handing it to Bree. She smiles at me and takes the strawberry from me, her fingers brushing against mine and making me shiver. She looks at me concerned and then down at her jacket.
"Are you cold? Here, you can wear my jacket," she says, shoving the strawberry in her mouth and taking off her jacket. I tell her I'm fine but she insists and hands me her jacket. I reluctantly put it on, but am immediately comforted by the warmth of the jacket.
I smile and take another strawberry out of the container to eat as I stare out into the lake. We soon run out of strawberries and I take out a piece of cake that the cooks packed us. Bree looks at me in awe, shaking her head and laughing.
"Are you trying to fatten me up?" she asks me as I set the piece of cake down on a plate between us. It's a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and it has little yellow flowers decorations on the sides of the cake, the whole thing looking almost too perfect to eat. But only almost.
"Is it working?" I ask looking up at her. She laughs and smiles at me, leaning her head against my chest. I worry for a minute because I don't have a binder on but she doesn't seem to mind and my dysphoria seems to be replaced by nerves at the moment.
I stab my fork into a piece of the soft, spongey cake and lift the fork up to Bree's mouth. She takes the bite and softly guns her approval. We sit there and eat the ridiculously large piece of cake, me feeding her and occasionally taking a bite.
We finish the cake and lie there in there on the blanket, Bree teasing me and asking if I had brought even more to fatten her up. I laugh and tell her that I didn't, fully knowing that there are raspberry pastries on the basket too.
We watch the stars for a while, Bree leaning against me as I thread my hands through her hair. She sighs contentedly and smiles up at me occasionally, catching me off guard a few times and making me blush, regardless of how much I try not to.
"Can I ask you a question?" I ask her. She hums softly and nods. I wrong my hands together and she seems to realize that I'm nervous. She grabs my hands and smiles up at me, silently reassuring me and letting me know that she's listening.
"I like you. Like in a romantic way. And it's fine if you don't like me like that, I hope we can be still friends if you don't, " I say. She looks down at my hands that are interlaced with here and smiles. The fairy lights dance over the water and reflect across the surface in an almost entrancing way.
"I like you too Cloud," she says to me softly. I look down at her and she smiles up at me, patting my hand. The fairy lights softly illuminate her face, making her look absolutely gorgeous. I hug her closer to me and smile even wider.
"So we're together?" I ask her. She turns around and sits in my lap, resting her head on my shoulder. I feel her breath fan across my neck and I smile happily. She pulls back and quickly kisses me on the cheek before hiding her face in the crook of my neck yet again.
"We're together," she replies quietly. We sit there for a while, a couple of workers walking by occasionally and looking over at us. We get a few smiles but some of them just stare at us. I mean, it's not likely they've seen a human before now I suppose.
"Want to go back to the room?" Bree asks me. I nod and she gets off of my lap, standing up and holding a hand out to help me up. I grab her hand and she pulls me up, not letting go as we walk away from the gardens.
I make a mental note to thank the cooks and gardeners for setting everything up for us as we walk back inside and to our hotel room. I open the door and we both see that Gold is still wide awake, watching a hologram video. She looks up as we enter the room and catches a glimpse of us holding hands.
"So I'm guessing it went well with them?" She asks Bree. She nods and smiles so widely that it looks like her face is going to fall off any second but I know that I'm probably smiling just as much as she is. Gold grind at us and walks over to me.
"I told you that she likes you," she says. Bree looks down at Gold in shock and Gold just laughs. At this point I've decided not to question how she knows these things and to just go along with it. We walk over to our bed and we sit down, Bree grabbing her phone off the bed and opening it.
"Want to play a game? " she asks me. I nod and we play a game on her phone while Gold watches a video on the hologram. Me and Bree switch off, as it's only a one player game. I look over at the hologram during one of Bree's turns and then back over at the phone.
"Is it possible to play games on the hologram?" I ask Gold. She looks up from where she's watching her video and nods, setting her paw on the podium and pulling up a game. Bree beats her level and puts her phone back on her pocket, smiling at me and Gold.
We walk over to the podium and play one of the games that they have, laughing and having fun.
