Chapter 12
I grab the clothes off of the rocks, making sure they are set before putting them in one of the saddle bags. I set my binder off to the side so I can put it on after I finish putting away our clothes. I strap the saddle bag shut and grab my binder before walking into the bathroom.
I pull my shirt off and slip my binder on, turning sideways and looking in the mirror. I smile when I see how flat I am, turning and striking a pose. Bree abruptly opens the door and walks in, and I jump before turning to look at her.
"Sorry Cloud, I just needed to wash my face," she apologizes, laughing. She walks over to the sink and washes her face while I put my shirt back on, my cheeks burning. I grab a towel off the rack and hand it to her, waiting as she dries her face off.
Gold pads into the bathroom, stopping beside us and watching as Bree hangs the towel back up. I walk out of the bathroom and pick the saddle up, Gold walking over and lying down so I can put it on. I get it on and grab the keys off of one of the rocks, twirling them around my pointer finger as we wait for Bree to get out of the bathroom.
She walks out a few minutes later and I take one more glance around the room before opening the door and walking out. Bree closes the door behind us and we walk down the stairs this time, after I convince them that the elevator is too dangerous, getting an eye roll from both of them.
"I promise the elevator wouldn't have killed you," Bree says to me. I grab the railing as I turn to her and glare. I walk down to the bottom of the stairs and wait for Good to get down them, the weight of the saddle on her back making her go slower than us.
"But it could have," I argue. She looks over at me and shakes her head, smiling. Gold gets to the bottom and hits me in the leg with one of her paws, growling at me. I sign and apologize before walking into the lobby of the hotel.
We check out of the hotel and walk outside, me and Bree getting on the saddle as soon as we're out. The sun is barely over the mountains in the distance, the streets not yet crowded with reptiles. Gold runs down the streets, taking advantage of the emptiness so we can get closer to the palace.
After a while the sun comes up over the mountains and the streets once again are crowded with reptiles. Most people move out of the way when they see Gold, but some stand in front of us and walk at an extremely slow pace.
One gecko in particular walks along without a care in the world, looking back and smiling a couple of times at the fact that they are holding us up. I look back at Bree and she shakes her head at the gecko, both of us jumping slightly as we feel Good growl beneath us. The gecko doesn't even turn around and I hear Good sigh.
"I'm going to jump over that gecko," she whispers to us, turning so Bree can hear her. We nod and she stops for a second before leaping over the gecko and landing in front of them. After a minute I look back and see that the gecko is still standing in the middle of the walkway, the blood drained from their face in shock.
"Don't hold up a lion," Bree says. I laugh and pat Gold on the head, feeling as she practically beams pride. We make it to the gates of the palace and get off of the saddle. The gates to up for as high as I can see, guard towers jutting out of the sides of the gates.
"Who are you and what is your business here?" A small lizard asks us. They start up at me, Bree, and Gold, seeming intimidated by us. They have a sword strapped to their back and a uniform on, like the rest of the reptiles working here.
"We wish to speak with the queen," Gold tells them. They nod and run over to a snake, tapping the snake on the shoulder and pointing to us while whispering something in their ear. The snake frowns and slithers over to us.
"You aren't anyone of importance that the queen would want to see," the snake says to us. I look over at Gold and she nods down at the small bag in my pocket. I pull it out and open it, letting Gold grab something out of it.
She grabs out a small necklace and shows it to the guard. The snake's face goes white and they nod to us, motioning for us to follow them. The other guards move back as we walk to the gates. The snake talks to the person operating the entrance and they nod and open it for us.
We walk through and are immediately met with dozens of reptiles lying outside on rocks scattered around the courtyard. The entrance door closes behind us with a sharp bang, startling some of the reptiles basking in the sun.
"Who are they mommy?" A tiny gecko asks their mother. The mother looks at us in awe and confusion before telling the kid that we are humans and Gold is a lion. The kid looks up at us in awe and I smile at them and wave.
They smile and wave back before going back to playing a game with their friends. We make it to the entrance of the palace and the guard walks over to it and opens a small box, covering it with some of their body while typing in the password with their tail.
The door opens and we're lead into a huge palace made of rocks. The hole place is warm, but it's not humid, or excessively hit like the beds were. We follow the guard around for a while before they manage to grab one of these reptiles who are bustling around the palace doing their jobs.
The reptile looks up at them and the guard explains who we are and that we need to meet with the queen. The reptile nods before telling us to follow them. They lead us up a flight of stairs and into a bedroom, one that actually has a bed for once.
"It could take a couple of days before I can schedule for the queen to see you. In the meantime, enjoy your stay here and if you need anything, use the hologram, " the reptile says to us. I nod and thank them, watching as they walk out the door.
Bree walks over and closes the door behind them before flopping into the bed. Gold walks over to a car bed in the corner and lies down. I realize that this is probably the room her mother stayed in while she was here. I look back over at Bree and see her sitting up on our bed.
"Guess we're sharing a bed for a while," Bree says, smiling at me. I nod and force the blood not to rush to my cheeks as I sit down on the bed beside her. She smiles at me and we sit for a while, looking around the plain room.
"Can someone please take this off of me, it's kinda heavy," Gold says from the cat bed after a minute, breaking the silence. Bree laughs and gets off the bed, walking over to help Gold get the saddle off.
